Kim Caldwell Is A Bruce Pearl Type Hire

With the relentless running and the three pointers flying from all angles to the fact that they both coached at small schools.

Expect Tennessee to pull off an upset or two this season.

I remember when people were talking about Derek Dooley this way.

Just watched the entire game on YouTube. I must say…..I’m intrigued by the “full court press” the Lady Vols give the SEC. I’m excited and optimistic. I’m so excited to see the how the season goes with CKC at the helm. 🍊🍊🍊🍊🍊 btw I loved the Media Presser and how she answered each question with confidence. 🤔😁

If the talent is not on the team then it's definitely not because of the new coach; however, it would be part of the reason she is now here.

Interesting. I don't remember that. The Vol fans I know, myself included, thought Dooley was a ridiculous hire from day one. He was 17-20, or some such, at his previous stop and coming off a losing year. He was hired because he had the same last name as a guy who won a title at a nearby rival school.

Yeah, they were impressed because he had been both AD and head coach at a small school, had a decent record, and had played LSU really close.

Agreed. My response to his hire was wtf? Trying to save money again?

Are we just going to disregard we were under investigation because of the Kiffin era? And no coach wanted to come in under a NCAA restriction with 3 weeks before NSD (no portal).

Obviously the talent difference caused the lopsided score. But I thought there were some concerning signs when we ran the full court 2-2-1. The back end was wide open at times because we failed to rotate. Against SEC competition, they’ll get picked apart. Looked a little better in the 1-2-2.

Maybe it was just experimental and they won’t run that in games that matter. Or maybe she wanted it on film so she can coach the deficiencies out of them. But that press has some big holes in it that CN just didn’t have the ability to exploit like an SEC team can.
It is obvious that this new scheme will have issues that need to be fixed. I am sure that CKC and her staff will address those issues. As CKC has indicated it will take time to turn the new scheme to work like a fine oiled machine. I believe that CKC will have her style of basketball much improved by the time SEC competition is in full bloom.

Dooley was better known for his press conferences than his coaching ability at Tennessee.

Not ignoring that. You could have made a list of 50 possible hires, including quite a few very successful at lower levels, who would have jumped at the chance, and Dooley wouldn't have been on the list.

Jimmy Haslam was on the plane when they went to sign him. Clearly Haslam wanted Dooley.
On paper, Dooley looked to be a home-run hire. He was smart, had a winning pedigree, was young, handsome, full of promise.

But it turned out he was the type of guy who was probably bullied in grade school, and on college spring break got sand kicked in his face by jocks who targeted him as a bookworm pansy-boy.

He was not the type of manly-man-coachy-coach that a lot of guys are attracted to. NOT that guys want to play for a stupid man, but they're not gonna be willing to run through a brick wall for Steve Urkel. Just sayin'. Dooley, the brilliant nerd, was never going to inspire a bunch of college-age jocks to be amazing. Just wasn't gonna happen.

I hate to repeat myself, but I don't personally know any Vol fan who thought that. What looked to the naked eye to be a horrible hire turned out to be, in fact, a horrible hire.

(Now, I don't disagree with your assessment of Dooley himself.)
