I overheard the former Ohio State qb saying last night on ESPN, saying(not verbatim) "Not only is the Ohio State and Michigan game the biggest rivalry in college football, but it compares to the Yankees and Red Sox rivalry of all times, that scale of rivalry".

Not really anymore serious than Alabama/UT, Alabama/Auburn, Ole Miss/Miss. St. , FSU/Miami etc. It's just the most overhyped and talked about rivalry in college football. The players and fans in some of the other rivalries are just as crazy about their rivalries.. but since OSU/Mich. both are good teams usually it gets all the pub.

I don't think you can call a rivalry the 'biggest rivalry'. Well, sure the media can and will make you believe it. For all we know that Amherst/Williams rivalry is the most meaningful and has the most passion.

That was just Herby being a Buckeye homer.

In all seriousness...it means very little and next to nothing among most college football fans I know.

as bad as the rest of the big 10 is, that's not exactly a feat of epic proportions. it's a lot of hype, and it gets more than it's fair share in years like this because the game is on ABC, period. and why wouldn't they hype it? you have to market your product.

Agreed that the game means nothing this year because the Big 10 is so weak no one really cares who wins it....But, as far as football rivalries that's a pretty storied one, I for one will not watch one minute of it on Saturday...But, I guess I am hoping that Mich wins so UT can climb up a couple spots in the rankings...

not to be a homer but the aTm vs Texas rivalry was pretty good and heated up untill 1999 when the stack fell. Although, Texas has dominated the matchup for years, the game and 2 weeks prior to it are filled with tradition that is unsurpassed imo. Maybe not the oldest. Maybe not the ugliest. Maybe not the national attention getter, but still a pretty darn good game. No better OR less of another rival with a few exceptions. But every "homer" is going to say that. Herbstreit was just being a homer and thats ok too. We all are to a point.

This is to be expected from Herbstreit. Last year he predicted that Vandy would beat us. Vandy beat Tennessee two years in a row!?!

Vandy beat anyone two years in a row? I honestly feel pretty safe about this weekend because they already have their big win of the year....we were 05, ga last year, usc this year....its floridas turn next year!

Duke - UNC is the biggest rivalry, IMO.

In college basketball, that is.

That one might be one of the best. There's just so much passion behind it. One of my friends from Ohio told me that every game at UT had a more electric atmosphere than the OSU UM game. I would say that the same cannot be said for the Duke - UNC game.

Once again UNC-Duke is basically the same as OSU/Mich. in football.

Most UNC fans dislike NC State more than the Dukies anyway. Growing up in North Carolina... it's either the Tar Heels or the Wolf Pack.

And Duke/UNC is the biggest rivalry in collge basketball hands down....Mich/OSU as Justin said earlier is second fiddle to the Iron Bowl....

No that wasn't my point.

I didn't say NC State was better. Duke obviously has the tradition. But I have many many NC State/UNC fans and the Duke game is huge. But the passion just isn't there like NC State and UNC.

Would you expect anything less from an Ohio State homer? Of course Herbie is going to bow down to his alma mater any chance he gets.

At least he isn't as bad as old Lou and Notre Dame.

In all seriousness, OSU/Michigan is probably the biggest rivalry in college football hands down. Most of us won't agree with it because we know how overrated the Big 10 is and always has been.

But from a national standpoint, more people care about that game than any other. These are the same people that elected Dubya as president -- always driving with blinders on.

Still not as big as Red Sox/Yankees IMO.
