But not in anyway bigger than BoSox - Yankees, Alabama - Auburn, Texas - Oklahoma, etc
I would say that it is bigger than the Yankees/Red-Sox because they play eachother so much....Now, if they meet in the playoffs I agree with you, but just a regular series the football game beats it...

UNC/Duke is just the more flashy, higher ranked, pretty game that the media likes to promote. Nothing wrong with that... same way with OSU/Michigan.

No that wasn't my point.

I didn't say NC State was better. Duke obviously has the tradition. But I have many many NC State/UNC fans and the Duke game is huge. But the passion just isn't there like NC State and UNC.
NC-State is a big game for both, but there is a reason why the Duke/UNC game is the last game in the regular season....It usually means who wins the conference, not to mention when they meet in the tourny....NC-State game is nothing compared to a Duke/UNC game....

There's no settling the 'biggest rivalry' so no point really. It depends on how you want to judge a rivalry? Do you think the biggest rivalry is between the best teams in the nation going at it every year? Then yes.. Duke/UNC would be the biggest game.. and so would OSU/Michigan.

UNC/NC State is something compared to the Duke/UNC game. It usually doesn't mean much IN the conference. But try not to forget what a rivalry is about.

I'll agree with that to an extent....I have just watched so many Duke/UNC games and followed the history of the programs to know what that game means to the players, coaches and fans....Not taking anything away from OSU/MICH or Yankees/Red Sox....But there is nothing to "me" that compares to the DUKE/UNC game....

BTW.....I Hate UNC!!!

Sure I guess. I've only seen a few Duke/WF games but since they're both in North Carolina and aren't the state schools - I wouldn't be surprised if that is one passionate/intese rivalry.

I overheard the former Ohio State qb saying last night on ESPN, saying(not verbatim) "Not only is the Ohio State and Michigan game the biggest rivalry in college football, but it compares to the Yankees and Red Sox rivalry of all times, that scale of rivalry".

I watched this too. Herb is clearly being bias here- a torch that usually is carried by that homer, Lou Holtz.

Has the same feel of a UNC/NC-State game....WF/Duke had some huge games a couple years back when Chris Paul and company were at WF....It's a real shame that Skip Prosser left the college basketball community to soon, he was a good coach and leader that died to young...

Once again UNC-Duke is basically the same as OSU/Mich. in football.

Most UNC fans dislike NC State more than the Dukies anyway. Growing up in North Carolina... it's either the Tar Heels or the Wolf Pack.

I'd have to disagree there from my time as a UNC fan during my childhood.

NC State is the red headed step child (no pun intended). More people you know may have gone to NC State, but since UNC and Duke have stomped NC State in many of the years past, I can tell you most fans would rather beat UNC or Duke than NC State, that last one is expected.

That's what I have been trying to explain....

UNC fans think that those who got into NC State didn't get into UNC. They consider themselves up there with Duke, and not at the lowly level of State.

It is all the State fans who hate UNC more than Duke because Duke doesn't even acknowledge them while UNC rubs it in.

Duke looks at WF as more of a rivalry because unlike State, WF has beaten them in the past and delivered many memorable games. I agree, UNC tries to shun NC-State. I just hate UNC so much it makes me want to throw up in my mouth even talking about them...

My whole family lives in North Carolina. Not many people grew up Duke fans. It was one of the two state schools. NC State or UNC. Duke is just the bandwagon school that gets fans from across the country, with some local. It meant way more to beat people who actually are in your state that you see more often that you can brag to.

That's kind of like a lot of the younger UT fans that say Florida is our biggest rival because we've handled Alabama over the years pretty well.

Uh, NO.

I've lived in Durham NC for 25 years (home of the Dukies, with UNC just a few miles away). In basketball, UNC-NC State is nowhere near Duke-UNC. Not even close. I don't know what part of NC you grew up in, but you're way off on this one. The Duke-NC basketball rivalry is INTENSE. UNC-NC State basketball isn't even on the radar compared to UNC-Duke.

If you're talking football, they don't really play that sport around here. They just pretend to play to give them something to do between basketball seasons.

Of course NC State is no where close in basketball.. I'm talking NC State vs. UNC in general. The fans. If Duke didn't consist of 1,000,000 bandwagon fans for basketball then it would a real 'instate' rivalry like the Auburn/Bama ones.

What I'm getting at is - you don't see the same passion for the fans all the way across the board. Last season at the SEC softball tournament the bamers were cheering against us when we lost to Florida. You won't find UNC fans booing or hating on Duke in other sports like they may NC State... it's just different when you work/live with these people.

What's happend to you today Bruno? I have never seen you argue about something that deep down you know is wrong. Duke is not a bandwagon school....Its a storied, tradition basketball school....If you are referring to them as bandwagonners than throw UNC in there as well, because how many MJ jersey's have you seen people all over the place where even though he hasnt played a game there since 82...Duke/UNC are the pride of North Carolina schools and like someone mentioned earlier NC-State is a red headed step child to them....come on man, whats wrong today?

Uhhhhh yeah you will....I will always pull for whoever is playing UNC in anything....Duke fans hate UNC everything and vice versa....That's why its called a "rivalry"

Thought you were talking basketball, which is what the poster who first mentioned Duke/UNC was talking about. There is no question that Duke/UNC basketball is one of sports' greatest rivalrys.

But you might be right overall. I would say that in some sports UNC/NC State is a more important rivalry. This is probably true in football even though Duke/UNC play in the last game of the regular season for the "Victory Bell". Duke has just been so pathetic in football it would be a stretch to say they could be anybody's rival anymore. Since 1994 they've had one winnning season and four WINLESS seasons, with very few wins in between.

But Duke/UNC are big rivals in sports other than basketball, too. There's even a thing called the Carlyle Cup which goes to whichever wins more athletic contests overall between Duke and UNC, including both men's and women's sports. This is a very coveted trophy.

I haven't noticed WF/Duke being particularly intense rivals in any sport, and I've lived on Tobacco Road for a very long time.

Duke is a bandwagon school. It ranks right up there with bandwagon schools. No offense. Yes it is a great school with tons of tradition.. but it has more bandwagoners in basketball than any other school at the moment.

Even my brother is one.. we have zero ties to Duke. Makes me sick. :bad:

I really don't think its believable to say Duke/UNC football strikes passion in the fans. Maybe some - like you, Mike, I guess, but I would highly doubt the majority cares.

Their football program is a joke but, they have a legitimate shot at beat Notre Dame this weekend, I think that will make everyone become a "Duke Bandwagoner" this weekend...
