Kirk Herbstreit Singles out Nico

Ones a job and one isn't. Lol fairly easy to understand
They are entertainers, so yeah college football is a job that they should be allowed to get paid for. Colleges make millions off of them. It baffles me that people are really upset that players get paid. Sounds mostly like jealously to me.

I'd love to see something legal happen to shut his mouth....since he named Nico specifically, if anything he said was untrue, I'd be calling him out and threatening libel/slander....

Sometimes these reporters feel that they are above the law and can say whatever they want without all the facts and can misrepresent the truth or sensationalize stories with impunity.

Would love to see Kirk and ESPN get called to the carpet on this one.

Oh they’ll do fine. But they’ll have more competition now and I guarantee you they don’t like it. You think a 5 star like Nico would have come from the left coast to UT if he wasn’t getting paid millions? I think not.

Didn't Casey Clausen come from California? Ainge from Oregon? Manning from Louisiana? So yes, I think Nico could have been recruited to UT without NIL money. Guarantano came all the way from New Jersey to play in Knoxville. And despite his failings, we was a highly rated QB out of high school. UT has never had much trouble recruiting talented QBs regardless of where they live. I just don't see NIL as that big of a deal. Much like the transfer portal, if fans think NIL alone is going to return UT to the upper echelon of college football, they are wrong. Great recruiting over an extended period of time, proper development of recruits, retention of recruits and stability in the coaching staff is the recipe for success.

While I somewhat agree there should probably be more detailed rules about NIL and using it as a recruiting tool has quickly got out of hand, Kirk should be ashamed for singling out a high school kid.

Say what you want about UT/Spyre, but leave the kid's name out of it.

In almost the same breath, he used Bryce Young as an example. BY had NIL deals in place in '21 worth $1 million before playing any significant snaps or becoming the starter. He played 13 snaps total that season, btw. Don't think for a second Saban didn't purposefully float that out there to bolster recruiting.

Kirk should be ashamed for being such a hypocrite and citing BY/Bama as a model while striking out against UT. I don't have any proof that BY knew this coming to Bama, but there's no way they haven't used it in recruiting since then. These kids know that kinda money is available. OSU is in the same boat as Bama and UT when it comes to NIL collectives. Him bashing one school while citing two others is ridiculous when all 3 are doing the EXACT SAME THING.

I'm not a huge fan of the Twitter mob, but I would be ok if Vol Twitter spent the next week roasting Herbie. He should be ashamed for singling out a kid and his opportunities on national TV and talking out of both sides of his mouth.

First Kirk isn’t the decider of policy. If what we do is within the rules who cares what he thinks. I guess he’s ok having a 4 team +/- set slate for the playoffs every year. That’s killing college football as much as anything. If anything NIL and transfer rules spread the talent more. I don’t have to agree with NIL but if it’s part of the game now may as well be in it.

In other words, you love it because it benefits UT
I've been waiting for an opening to respond, looks like this is it.

I can't stand Herbie but I think he's right too. I've agreed with all your posts in this thread.

I also know that we're past the point of return. This is college football now and I'd better embrace it because if I don't, it will be ruined for me.

So I'm really glad Tennessee is benefitting from it.

All i can say is a lot of high profile teams are butt hurt over Tennessee getting arguably the best QB in this class. You can just tell the disdain.. They'll be really butt hurt if they finish real strong and pick up a few more difference making players. They just don't want Tennessee in the conversation.

Yep - Herpystreet and ESPN are starting to spin the narrative away from Arch Manning in typical fashion by tearing down other teams/people that don't meet their specific agenda.

ESPN did as much for driving Arch's name as anyone as 'THE' recruit in the cycle.
Now they see that Arch isn't the best QB in the class, they are starting to pulldown the one that should have been ranked number one.

Exactly! 3x the valuation of Nico ... https://www.on3.com/nil/rankings/player/high-school/football/

Even in the offseason, Herbstreit won't shut up.

Can't stand that guy. Hypocritical tool.

But KH used the reference as “players who have earned it”. Young got $1mil before he ever took a meaningful snap.

But he has no issue LY when a Tx kid left HS a year early for a million dollar deal since O$U had nothing to do with it. LOL

This is NOT a criticism of Nico in any way...BY sat on the bench his 1st year behind Mac Jones. Which worked pretty well for them. BY had a year to learn the system and impress the coaches in practice. Which he did do. After that year he negotiated his NIL deal. I am curious, what percentage of 5* players who sign on to a team negotiate their NIL deals during their 1st year on campus? I am betting near 100% do and how many meaningful snaps have they had? I which someone would tell me what a “meaningful” snap is vs a non meaningful snap.

Really?

It really doesn't matter to me. The games will broadcast no matter what. At the end of the day it's still going to be 11 on 11 football. The in between stuff really only matters to the people involved. You can choose to enjoy the games or don't, they will always be there for you to choose.

California is currently the only state that permits high school students from benefitting from their NIL. There are some stipulations about this. If they don't like it, go to California and complain. Nico has done nothing wrong and neither have the Vols.

You can’t use Young as an example though, yes he hadn’t started, but he had been on campus. If this deal was announced next year, with Nico on campus, no one would bat an eye.

The problem is NIL is not supposed to be used to entice players to schools, it’s still a recruiting violation. Which is why collectives are in the crosshairs and I think things have slowed down overall.
Meanwhile Ruiz is down at Miami just buying players blatantly.

The Club has told the doorman not to let “riffraff” like Tennessee past the entrance

Totally agree. So we're on a UT board, commenting on UT football, a rule change is made that might benefit U? So we're supposed to go to war and require something that doesn't benefit UT? That's woke Vandy thinking at work. Biden has a staff bizarro position for posters here supporting things that DON'T benefit UT football.

TN is just now doing what Alabama, Ohio State, and Clemson were doing all along…paying their players…we actually have a lot of catching up to do, since they’ve been allowed such privilege for the last 30 years or so.
TN is the epitome of a sleeping giant. May not be a recruiting hot-bed like GA, FL, TX, and CA, but all the pieces to be a championship program are there. Rival fans may mock us, but they know that. That’s why we catch so much hell from them. We have the money, the facilities, tradition, and recruiting proximity to make it happen. I think a huge part (the problem) over the past 15yrs was the incompetence of the AD and booster meddling. Exactly what’s happening to Auburn right now. We just need the right HC (tbd, but promising) and an AD to tell those boosters to shove it (I think we do). TN has always done what those other programs do, just not as cleverly (see above).
