KKK statue in Alabama

Absolutely. Like you said, we all know what he did. It's like a memorial for JFK that included something about Marilyn Monroe. It serves no purpose to be included.

Betcha that pissed Jeb Stuart off.

Stuart and Forrest were different kinds of cavalry commanders. Stuart's cavalry was used mostly as a scouting force. Forrest used his troopers more like dismounted cavalry, using their horses to move swiftly and then fighting dismounted. Forrest was also pretty good at raiding and just wreaking havoc, in general.

I don't think they should be forced to remove it, but it would be wise to dissociate the KKK with that particular monument.

Again, where is the KKK referenced on the monument?

I'm pretty sure it doesn't say KKK anywhere. I just think it would be best for everyone if the "Wizard" title were removed. I know it's not supposed to directly reference the KKK, but since Forrest is remembered in the way that he is, I would just say it's foolish to have the "Wizard" title for this statue.

And I'd bet the ranch half the people b!thing wouldn't have known a damn thing about him and his involvement with the Klan if it weren't for Forrest Gump.

Yeah I'm sure thousands of people have seen and read that monument and had no idea of his involvement. That's one of the reasons that I don't think it's too big of a deal.

People who aren't ingorant of the historical context of the "Wizard" title won't be offended. Those who are offended can just refuse to acknowledge the monument. It's tucked away in a cemetery, not sitting out in the middle of the town square.

And the rest of the know it all's are convinced that "Wizard of the Saddle" is a backhanded shout out to the KKK.

Yeah, that's why I don't think it's a big deal. In my perfect world, the "Wizard" thing wouldn't be on it, but I'm not getting my panties in a wad over it.

If the "wizard" wasn't meant to "celebrate" his connection to the KKK then everyone needs to calm the F down. If it was then it is dumb and offensive but good lord we have bigger problems than this.

There is a laughably bad statue of him on horseback that a private party put on their property on the side of I-65 going south out of Nashville.

Awesome. Found a link

Brentwood, TN - Nathaniel Bedford Forrest Statue

that thing is an embarrassing eyesore. I see it everyday. Friends from NYC, Greece, LA and other places make me take them to get pics. They can't believe who it is when I tell them. Statue looks like a bad joke, and the 20 rebel flags around it with special lighting really look ridiculous.

Im trying to figure out what the controversy really is if it's a monument located on private land. Its not something id probably display, but half the people opposing it probably have cars sitting on blocks in their yard which is pretty offensive if you ask me.

I think congress should put up a statue of Hitler honoring his ability to turn around a post war economy. It isn't like they are honoring his anti-semitism or militaristic expansion policies, as long as it isn't mentioned on the monument.

That's a great analogy, since Forrest is totally comparable to Hitler. Gotta love when people pull out the Nazi references when they can't really come up with a cogent argument.

Furthermore, I would be interested to know your stance on statues of prominent Union figures like Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses Grant, William Sherman, and Phillip Sheridan.

Uh......Forrest is not the best the best example to use when calling out someone making a Hitler comparison. He may not have led an entire nation, but he did some things that were, to put it in the gentlest manner possible, deplorable.

When someone's differences with Hitler do not include genocide, I think it's okay to make the comparison.
