Knoxville Restaurants

I guess you could say it's slightly more...scuzzy...than the chains that clearly cater to upper/upper-middle class white America, but they are to the point and offer a wonderful selection. The focus is on the food, not the Panera experience (if that's a thing). I'd definitely recommend it as a well-priced alternative that makes a good product.

When it comes to bagels, I'm a pathetically boring fan of plain with lox and cream cheese. They knocked it out of the park with my boring-ass bagel. I can only assume that the more intricate ones are spot-on as well.

Panera and Einstein have almost always been take-out places for me if I go so the whole "experience" thing doesn't phase me. I like a quality bagel and my favorite is the everything bagel. I'll have to give them a shot.

They're at McKay's today. I have to try it just for the cheese curds.

Find The Truck - Poutine Mobile East Tennessee food truck.

I've been wanting to try poutine for a while, I might have to check this out. Their obviously Canadian accents definitely lets you know they're authentic.

After living in Knoxville for a year and a half, the places that I enjoy most are:

Mehsiko - Off of West End Avenue in Farragut. Best Mexican food in Knoxville, IMO.

Wasabi - Turkey Creek. Good size portions, always good food, reasonably priced if you go at lunch.

Cheddar's - Fat person's paradise for portion sizes. Recommend the Spinach Dip and Skillet Cookie.

Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of Calhoun's or Dead End BBQ. Haven't been to Sweet P's. Ate at the Copper Cellar once before a game, it was alright.

Tomato Head is a good pizza, though expensive.

Have not eaten at Mehsiko. A handful of people in here will argue that che Guevera is the best but I'm a huge proponent of Don Gallo. I've eaten at both Che Geuvera and Don Gallo and imho they are comparable to one another in quality and taste.

My go to at Cheddars is the fried fish tacos. Great portion size and they're delicious!

Went to Little Joe's last night, and the food was on point. Had the chicken parm and the wife has a small pepperoni pizza. Both hot and tasty. Best garlic bread I think I've ever had too.

My biggest problem with them, the overall atmosphere inside. Too dark, wait staff doesn't seem to be that great, and it could use a good cleaning. I mean, when you pick up a menu and you immediately feel the need to go wash your hands, there's a problem with that. If it wasn't for the food, the other things would absolutely make the place unbearable.

Can't stand Cheddars. It's like a rebranded O'Charley's, but I like O'Charley's much better.

Wife and I tried Louie's for the first time last night. I walked away stunned. I got the baked spaghetti and she got the lasagna. Her lasagna was better but both meals were incredible. Louie's is definitely getting added to the rotation.

I always loved the spaghetti at Louie's. If I'm not mistaken it has a hint of spice to it.

I was in Knoxville last week and ate at Louie's. I have never been disappointed. I usually get the combination dinner with ravioli and spaghetti with a meatball.

I have an aversion to more than one fork and white linen. I tend towards the sketchier side of cuisine I guess. Just a few places that do a few things really really well:

BBQ- Bread of Heaven usually found at Big Lots parking lot in Alcoa but soon to be at the Antique Mall in Townsend. Runner up: The Jamaican place on Old Knoxville Hwy, Rocky's Jamaica Sunrise.

Biscuits and Gravy: Midland Restaurant in Alcoa. Everyone else can go back to the drawing board.

Chili: Deadbeat Pete's in Maryville on 411. Also, the best under $10 burger around these parts. Fresh Chuck, ground daily and never frozen.

Mexican: Green Acres Flea Market on Alcoa Hwy. Either one of the small buildings on the grounds proper or that yellow restaurant / grocer combo facing the hwy. This is not tex-mex inside the flea market. Be adventurous or don't bother.

Middle Eastern: Holy Land Market and Deli in Knoxville. Everything they make is crazy good and the people are awesome.

So where can I get a steak n a sack here in Knoxville? I know Ali Babba's used to be an option but obviously that's not the case anymore. I have a place in Chatt called Ankar's but as far as I know there aren't any here. Any suggestions?

The only way I'd compare the two are in being a chain restaurant. There are different items on both menu's. The atmosphere at Cheddar's on Kingston Pike is great to me.

Haven't been there myself but I've heard Sam and Andy's has a great steak in a sack.

Now this is my kind of list. I've got 3 new places to try. Thanks man.

I'm hitting the Jamaican place ASAP. We spent a couple weeks down there in March (my 3rd trip) and I'm jonesing for some jerk chicken.

I've always wondered about the Mexican stuff at Green Acres. Sounds interesting.

Billy's Timeout Deli in Oak Ridge has a good steak n a sack. I was in the area and had one last week. Just as good as 25 years ago. May not be the same as Ali Babbas but I think they are good.

I am going to be in Knoxville in a few weeks. Has anyone tried the Shrimp Dock? I like old style Calabash shrimp, is it any good?

I heard that there is another Ali Baba's at Downtown West and Kingston Pike in that shopping center at the SE corner. I haven't been by and don't know if it's at all affiliated with the original. I miss the original. I was there many a late night in that crowded little room. When they were ready to take another order they'd say "next please".

Nope. Not affiliated with the old one.
