I didn’t go out of my way to read about it, so this is a tentative conclusion, but the more I think about it, it seems like kind of a fishy story.
Granted, she probably didn’t write the book herself, but the bits I heard make her seem like a bit of a poser. As if she knew there are circumstances where you put down a dog, and she wanted to show off to establish some anti-woke, country girl bonafides. She ended up sounding irresponsible or like it’s a poorly made up story, which is probably why she’s gone on the defensive instead of just letting the woke hysteria work to her advantage.
I also saw a tweet where she was using “but muh kids” as an excuse, which lends credence to the above possibilities, for me. My only real experience with hunting dogs is that they lived in a kennel behind my uncle’s house, where I spent most of my summers. If they got out, my cousins and I played inside until my uncle got them back in. My cousins had pet dogs that lived in the house, but the hunting dog(s) didn’t curl up on the couch, they didn’t come in the house, and they didn’t eat off the table. In fact I can remember my uncle threatening to switch me for something related to those dogs. (Probably throwing a chicken wing or something in the kennel.)
Whether that’s a universal practice or not, we never had a problem with the dogs being a threat to us as kids, or the neighbor’s kids, or the neighbor’s livestock, because my uncle was responsible.
