I want a great coach...but I also want a coach that will not use 'an individual' or 'resiliency and resolve' or 'and again' thousands of times in each press conference when answering questions....

See post #9. PAC12 record not so great.

The PAC 12 has a roughly even record against other power 5 conference schools as anyone else. They don't have a team that could win the CFP but are as strong as the ACC and Big Ten from top to bottom. Their worst school this year is no worse than the SECs worst school.

Through last weekend, PAC 12 is 19-7 vs OOC FBS opponents in 2017. They are 6-2 against power 5 OOC opponents. They are 6-4 on the road against OOC opponents.

The SEC is 20-7 vs OOC opponents in FBS. 5-3 on the road and 5-6 against power 5 OOC opponents.

Great. OK, KW is the PAC12 version of Butch Jones. The record speaks for itself. Post #24.

Great, good for him, he did that 10 years ago with Urban's players.

RECENT HISTORY
Utah Utes (Pac-12 Conference) (2011–Present)
2011 Utah 4–5 T–3rd (South)
2012 Utah 3–6 5th (South)
2013 Utah 2–7 5th (South)
2014 Utah 5–4 5th (South)
2015 Utah 6–3 T–1st (South)
2016 Utah 5–4 3rd (South)

When he first reached the P12, it was a big step up in weekly competition. Looks like he has recently posted three winning records in P12 games at Utah.

Being from Utah, he, of course, has a huge family.
Would need extremely big house.
Four sister wives and 18 children, 6 grandchildren.

Yeah, he's really killing it.

KW (didn't have to rebuild anything)
2013 2–7
2014 5–4
2015 6–3
2016 5–4

BJ (took over dumpster fire)
2013 2–6
2014 3–5
2015 5–3
2016 4–4

I'm no Jones apologist. But I'll wait until something a little better comes along.

I don't know if this name has came up much here on VN, but what would everyone think about this hire if we do end up firing Butch? He is 108-50 at Utah and 10-1 in bowl games. His current salary is $3.3 million. Thoughts?

He has been talked about alot. Id be all in favor.

Patterson would be a home run. Whittington would be an expensive mistake.

He coaches in Utah. Let that echo through your mind for a second.

How much harder it must be to recruit and develop talent in frigging Utah than Knoxville.

I'm not saying Kyle Wittingham should be our next coach, but be fair when comparing his record to other power 5 teams.

Look at Utah's location, facilities, stadium, recent recruiting rankings, and program history when judging his performance.

I'm neutral on Whittingham, but people can't overlook that fact. It's a lot tougher shifting from a mid major to a major than it is for a school like Missouri or A&M to switch. It would be like the SEC adding Memphis and expecting them to go 6-3 from the get-go. They have to build the necessary depth to compete on a weekly basis, not just one game like a bowl win.

I'll concede this. KW would be a better hire than Dooley; on par with Jones hire.

Tier 1:
1. Gruden
2. C. Kelly
——————
Tier 2:
3. Patterson
4. Peterson

Tier 3.
5. Give up. Find another hobby and accept that our AD/Boosters do not care about winning championships and prepare to have this same discussion again in 5-7 years if hiring anyone outside Tier 1 or 2.

This was my thought. His first 3 years in the conference were down but the last 3 have been above .500. Which shows me that he can recruit. And that is at Utah. He could do more with the resources at Tennessee. Not saying that he is the home run hire that everyone is wanting. But, he is a proven coach at a major level of football.

Good point. Only 4 coaches in the universe would be a good choice here. Otherwise, shut down the program.

He’s at Utah, in the P12. Jones is at Tennessee.
Again, not my first choice, but better than Jones. Does Whittingham give excuses during game week and then lie after he loses with talk of fake analytics and imaginary charts?

To speak in your terms, a “good” coach can certainly be had to produce what we are currently getting (8-4 seasons). This would be the Fuente/Mullen level and down with the names being tossed about.

If you want a “great” coach and championships then yes, I believe that eliminates all but a few.
