Tier 1:
1. Gruden
2. C. Kelly
——————
Tier 2:
3. Patterson
4. Peterson
——————
Tier 3.
5. Give up. Find another hobby and accept that our AD/Boosters do not care about winning championships and prepare to have this same discussion again in 5-7 years if hiring anyone outside Tier 1 or 2.

Waste of space to include Gruden on any list.
Insulting to Chris Petersen for him not to be in someone’s Tier 1.

You have zero chance at 2 of those guys...so, you're actually down to 2.

I would say 0-4 on those choices. It comes up every time we have a coaching search. Patterson has no desire to coach at UT after being shafted by Hamilton and Peterson won't leave the west coast, as has been proven every time a major coaching job opens up. There is a reason he chose Washington over bigger jobs he has been offered. It's where he and his family want to be.

Agreed. I could have grouped those 4 all into the same tier but that’s how I see it. Don’t worry I know I’m a fool for putting Gruden’s name on that list. 😉

I don’t think the situation’s as dire as you describe it if we get a real coach in here. Think about everything you don’t like about Jones and then consider how many games he’s managed to win. A superior coach can do really well here.

The only problem with KW is that he's been a coach at Utah since 1994. Don't think he's leaving unless their Athletic Dept changes.

Understood but our definitions of “superior” or what constitutes a “homerun hire” are different. I’m not trashing all these other coaches being mentioned. They just don’t fall into my definition of “great” and I believe we would be having these discussions again in 5-7 years after repetitive 8-4 seasons and 2nd/3rd place finishes in the SECE.

There was a time a couple of years ago when Wittingham was having some issues with the AD he might have considered leaving. But he went to BYU for college and has coached at Utah since before Meyer was here. He turned us down right before Jones was hired and I suspect the odds of him leaving are low.

That being said, Utah rarely gets four star recruits, certainly not as many as UT, but has also regularly produced more NFL draft picks than most SEC teams. He can flat-out coach. But you probably would need to pay like $8 million a year to lure him.

I want a HR too.
I’m afraid we’ll beat out an infield single while UF fires a coach with two SECE titles and hits a HR or at least a ground rule double.

That was what I was thinking when looking back at their signing classes. It is the mark of a good coach when they can do more with less. Just imagine what he could do with more talent. And I definitely think his offense would excite our fan base.

However, after what several people have said on here about him turning us down in 2010 coupled with the fact he has been there so long and just signed a contract extension, it would probably be a long shot.

Utah is not a mid-major anymore. They are in the Pac-12.
And, at this point, I’d rather take my chances with a new coach than stay the course. Unfortunately, the current course did not work out beyond a single win over Florida, a couple of wins over UGA, three second-tier bowl wins, and what looks like at least a somewhat better roster than CBJ inherited.

"Staying the course" is not the issue. Despite the perception of how the last 3 games went, we are on a better course as to recruiting, compliance and academics than ever before. And no matter how bad you want Butch gone, he has been a part of that getting better.

Where we might need to get better in the next hire (if it comes) is player evaluation, injury management, game planning and preparation, and not saying stupid stuff in press conferences. But if you say stupid stuff, go Mike Leach stupid. I mean what would you rather hear? Fat little girlfriends or 5 star hearts?

Agreed on compliance and academics.
Improving on player evaluation, injury management (whatever that means, but I have nothing better), and game planning and preparation is a must. These are the basics of being a coach. Winning and losing controls a lot of narratives. If we are winning, Jones is goofy at press conferences. If we are losing, he is annoyingly stupid.

He coaches in Utah. Let that echo through your mind for a second.

How much harder it must be to recruit and develop talent in frigging Utah than Knoxville.

I'm not saying Kyle Wittingham should be our next coach, but be fair when comparing his record to other power 5 teams.

Look at Utah's location, facilities, stadium, recent recruiting rankings, and program history when judging his performance.

Mullen is the first call if u can wait until end of season.

Next tier:
Offense go Sterling Gilbert at USF. Defense go Bo Pelini or Greg Schiano.

This board is full of goofballs. If the coach can do reasonably well and stay competitive in a major conference with two and three star recruits then he could do a bang up job here with the resources at Tennessee and the talent on board. Gruden, Kelly, Stoops, and Patterson are never coming here.

I do not want..."better than Butch"

Might get it, but not what I want. Please no.

If our new coach has us saying "he's better than Butch". :thud:

Tired of this zone dead offense Lyle runs. I miss the Vols pro style, out of the I, none of this stay in the shotgun the defense knows our play crap, I don't blame players transferring to an offense suitable for them ala Peterman, and Ferguson, then u see their true talent. Might as well get a hobo off gay st. Let him be qb defense knows he isn't going to keep it.

These coaches like Peterson and Whittingham are Mormons so I doubt they would go anywhere that does not have many Mormons.

I don't know if this name has came up much here on VN, but what would everyone think about this hire if we do end up firing Butch? He is 108-50 at Utah and 10-1 in bowl games. His current salary is $3.3 million. Thoughts?

Edit: guess I should've googled! I thought Whittingham was Utah grad.
