Ok well he did do something we can't seem to do. Made the Sugar Bowl and beat Nick Saban. 2 for 1 right there.

If we are going to gloss over 10 year old achievements, why not see if we can get Fulmer, Cut, and Chavis back together. They had a pretty good year back in 1998. Maybe give Chizik a call. He beat Saban once too.

I'm saying even though we didn't have a shot at the SEC Championship we were the favorite to make it to the Sugar Bowl. We couldn't even do that because we crapped the bed against Vandy. And we've never beaten Saban while at Bama and we play him every year. And the 2 times we actually had a chance at winning we did what UT always does. Find a way to lose the game. Blocked kick to end one game and the defense couldn't close after taking a 4th quarter lead in the other. KW accomplished more at Utah in that one game than we have as an entire football program in the last 10 years. The last time we beat a Saban coached team was September 29, 2001. Let that sink in.

I'm saying KW, based on his recent results, is not a take. In 3 years we would be back having this same discussion.

So I guess you're living in the pipe dream along with alot of others thinking this AD is going to actually spend money to get the right guy? They have never done that and never will do that. We will have to live with guys like KW that will be good but not great. But I would rather have someone like him than Butch. At least KW has been in a Power 5 conference the last few years and has the experience of coaching big boy football. And if we're talking recently, KW has his team undefeated right now. How are we doing exactly?

He may not be better than we can get, but I’m not convinced that he’s not better than who we will get.

If for some reason we aren't able to hire the "big name" coach, what about someone like Mike Bobo. Has always been one of the top recruiters in the country, has coached in the SEC, and his Colorado State team played Alabama better this year than two other SEC schools. He hasn't been mentioned as far as I know.

I don't know if this name has came up much here on VN, but what would everyone think about this hire if we do end up firing Butch? He is 108-50 at Utah and 10-1 in bowl games. His current salary is $3.3 million. Thoughts?

Tennessee would have to pony up some serious cash to pay health care for all 12 of his wives and 82 children.

My anti-Whittingham argument is that if we take anyone so long as they are better than Jones, we will likely be having this same discussion again in 3 years.

I want a tier 1 coach, no more mediocracy in our hires, unless we want to start accepting mediocracy on the field.

And if we want to accept mediocracy on the field, let's just keep Jones. At least our guys are getting good grades and staying out of trouble.

Same argument everyone had about Urban Meyer when he left Utah for Florida. How did that turn out? Florida was *****ing and moaning that his offense will never work in the SEC, he can't win here, he's not a top tier coach. BS either you can coach or you can't!

Whittingham can coach!

With the crowd on this board, they would be calling for his head in less than two year.

This board is full of goofballs. If the coach can do reasonably well and stay competitive in a major conference with two and three star recruits then he could do a bang up job here with the resources at Tennessee and the talent on board. Gruden, Kelly, Stoops, and Patterson are never coming here.

You and I finally agree on something

I mentioned him few days ago. Not the "big name" that would get the program out of the media dog house, but I would he's on the second tier along w/ Mike Norvell and some of the coordinators.

Whittingham at Tennessee? I'd allow it. Count me with the folks who think that turning a WAC team into a competitive PAC-12 team is a pretty significant accomplishment.

Utah's AD has been there since forever. Seriously... AD since 1987. That AD thought a coach with two years of head coaching experience, out of Bowling Green (yep, that's Urban Meyer) would be a good idea. Same guy also thought Whittingham was a good idea. What have our ADs been thinking sounded like a good idea of late?

Oh and besides Utah beating Saban a while back... McElwain's first year with Florida in 2015, they got thumped by Michigan 41-7 in a bowl in Harbaugh's 1st year there. Utah beat Michigan that year.

But I'm also with the folks that think a guy who's been coaching in some capacity at Utah since 1994 is not especially likely to leave.

(edited because I can't spell gud)

Yeah I didn't realize he had been there that long or that he had already turned us down once. Definitely would be harder to get than I originally thought.

Ryen Russillo was wondering aloud on his pod if Whittingham is the 2nd best coach in college football. He has a very good case. The dude brought a group of 5 team to the power 5, and they've played very competent ball, and competed consistently for conference titles. He'll take his 3-star guys and beat your 4-star and 5-star guys. They're always prepared. They always play with heart. And the guy is just a genius about game management. This is all coming from someone who went to BYU.
