Lady Vols Game Thread vs Louisville NCAA Tournament

Same song and dance.

Fidgeting, scratching her face, rubbing her nose and so on.

After every loss the same answers are given by her. No need to post her canned answers. I tortured myself watching that presser.

Quinnipeac and Oregon made their 1st sweet sixteen.

Tennessee lost their first 2nd round game in program history.

AD Currie why take a chance by keeping Holly to do damage to the incoming freshmen? She can't coach them. The LVs lost 26 games in two years and it shows on the court. :thud:

My guess is she and MR will be eager to move on. A bad ending to their careers, but the negativity is going to skyrocket.

DD is ready for the next step and probably will leave this mess behind.

Russell may be eager but are WNBA coaches and GM's eager to pick her in the draft? I'm not so sure.

If MR is as bad as most on this board say she is. I admit I'm one of them, why would WNBA coaches, GM's want to pick MR in the first place, because of size? If size mattered she should have been dominating these college level post players. She can't jump or run, the WNBA is twice as fast as WCBB.

She may know this already, therefore IMO, she may decide to come back next season.

If MR does come back, the outside shooting should improve a lot which would open it up in the middle.

One glaring stat that has been a constant this year is poor shooting by MeMe, Middleton and Jordan. I believe they were 4 of 19 last night.

I watched the game last night and my take away was that it doesn't matter who is coming in next year the LVs will struggle unless somebody teaches them a different style of basketball.

From LV box - 20 made shots, 11 assists and 13 turnovers.
From UConn's box - 33 made shots, 30 assists and 10 turnovers.

It's all about ball and player movement.

Tennessee was supposed to have outside firepower with Middleton, DeShields and Nared, so what makes the incoming freshmen any different. The recruits will not change the fact that Tennessee's "offense" does not maximize the abilities of outside shooters.

For all of MR's naysayers, you best start praying that she comes back, because while Tennessee will likely improve in a weak sauce SEC, they will get steamrolled by any of the top 10 teams without her presence.

Where we lost the game is where we have been losing all season. The big three scored 54 points which is an excellent total for them and a reason we should win. The problem came in with the rest of the team 4 for 21 and 10 total points. The lack of a bench is the reason we were such a erratic team this season. When the bench came through with 25 to 30 points we were winners and when they played like yesterday we lost.

I would like Russell to stay Diamond also but understand why she would leave she is a very high draft choice probably number one next season. If we could get Russell back she could join Nared, Green, Westbrooks, and Cooper as five players that will produce big numbers next season. The bench of Hayes, Middleton, Jackson, KK, Jackson, Dunbar and Harris is much more solid than what we had this season.
If for some reason like a shot at the final four Diamond decides to come back it will be a must for Holly to take us to the final four or she should be out of a job no question as the firepower off the bench will be a lot different than this season.

Cannot agree with hoping Mercedes comes back. This is what is wrong with the team of late. Acceptance of what is the best player available (with no desire or effort) verses a lesser skilled player trying their best. Take Nunn verses Mercedes this year . I would rather know that I am going to lose with Nunn's effort than win with a better athlete with little effort! ( like Mercedes) Mercedes will let the weakest player on the other team take the ball away from her with little or no effort to stop them ! But try and take the ball away from Nunn and you are going to have a fight on your hands!!!!!!!

I would rather have Harris, KK, And Green playing with effort and lose verses having Mercedes back and playing with little effort acting like she is going to touch someone! Just my opinion

where we lost this game is time-outs.
Louisville used 3 TO's early in the game to control the game's tempo.
We let the 4th qtr run go, getting outscored by 12 points, on two mini runs.

We held a 47-46 lead entering the fourth quarter, but we missed our first 12 shots....Ummm, time-out please??

And they didn't suck this year? You cannot get me to believe you enjoyed this year! Much less the past few years? They are so hard to watch.... breaking basketball principles of the game that were taught in high school. AND CONTINUE TO DO SO!!!! Letting weaker teams beat you with them playing with effort and you are not playing with effort!

As I stated before ( AND ADMITTED) I would rather lose with lesser skilled athletes playing with their best effort than watch another ALL AMERICAN play this type of basketball! AGAIN ( JUST MY OPINION)

I believe HW sees the writing on the wall and deep down she knows she doesn't have what it takes to lead a program. Very possible she steps down in the very near future.

They will suck even more next year if MR doesn't come back. Those wins against Stanford, UK, MSU, ND and SC don't happen without MR. Whether MR underachieved or not, the attention she commands just by virtue of being on the court opens the floor for Tennessee's other players. Without her, then the rest of the players will have much fewer open looks because I doubt a 6'3 player or a 6'4 freshman will command double teams by most of the top teams.

Mercedes playing half speed is still likely better than any of the other post options available to Tennessee this year or next year.

My sentiments exactly which is a huge reason as to why the team plays the way they do because certain players know that there will be nothing said if they don't play well.

We are too reliant on certain players and their "skill" set that we have lost our passion to be dominant and play up to our tradition.

Reynolds and Russell could play extremely poor and the excuse would be that we just don't have anyone to replace them but we see Nunn, Dunbar, Harris and Middleton get in and give us all they have and yet they barely see the floor.

Pat (and as we have seen and heard from Geno) would not tolerate poor play/lack of effort yet Holly seems to almost welcome it.

What if Diamond & Mercedes both decide that they want a chance to win a title and don't want to go to the WNBA this year but want to be a package deal of Grad Transfers and go to the same school together and play next year. (I know it wont happen but it's always a possibility)

Alexa is fine, she and JR were both focused on protecting the ball and distributing it.

DD is and should be, the focus of this offense for the duration of this tourney. As is MR and JN.

Not sure what has JN down. Her energy and effort is fully there, but her proficiency and confidence is definitely down. I think she heeds the "Jollette dinner" talk.

Well there you go....they were and the duration wasn't very long. Same player she has been since she was 11.

Show horse vs work horse.

Pat would sit any player any time for any reason she thought appropriate, and her players knew it. She was tough, but fair, and her players knew she cared. Holly expects less from her players... and she gets it.

Can we please go over the top of a ball screen, double it, plug it, ice it, hedge it, etc? It's not that difficult!!! We go underneath everyone and give up points every time. Make an in game adjustment!!!!

The game plan was for the person defending the screener to flat hedge on the screen and let the player defending the ball go under...... did anybody see our defenders flat hedge? I didn't.

Maybe if the LVs knew how to run a pick/roll or pick/pop on the offensive side they would understand how to defend it. All the LVs know is measure up your defender and try to beat them off the dribble. When you have two players that the ball sticks in their hands whenever they touch it.......the other three players look like they are playing clueless.
