Lady Vols - National Anthem

Since we're down the kneel/no kneel rabbit hole, I've never understood why we have the NA before sporting events in the first place. Obviously its a chance to show respect, appreciation, etc, but it also has a dear leader militaristic feel to it as well IMO.

Turns out the custom started with WWI and WWII as a way to garner public support and war bond buying for the war effort. After WWII, owners of sports teams realized the patriotic tie-in was good for biz and so starting playing the full anthem before every game.

I don't think for a minute that one of these kids meant the slightest bit of disrespect. We don't have to guess what they meant, because Rennia told us at the start of her Arkansas postgame interview. In general, she said, just awareness of "all the things that happened this week" apparently referring to Jan 6. Kind of generic, actually, just assuming a prayerful pose for their country. We're mad at them over that?

Kneeling morphed long ago from some revolutionary gesture to something different, to which lots of different causes can be attached. Lots and lots of worse things to get worked up over.

Seems kneeling is more important than winning to these LadyVols...

Will be watching. Proud these women were willing to exercise their right of free speech to call attention to a social issue they care deeply about. And I am sorry for your loss. Rest in Peace Parler.

Be nice if they care deeply about winning the game.. Oh course I will admit a real coach would help.

You certainly watch too much CNN. You have mentioned some, but not all, of their fables.

Well, it's just a different world these days. I'm not sure how Pat would have handled players kneeling in protest when the national anthem is played. These privileged young ladies, living in the greatest society in history, going to college for free--well, I guess they've got a lot to be upset about. It puts Kellie and all coaches in a difficult position these days. I'll watch their games if I've got nothing else to do, but I don't feel any real tie to them. On top of all that, they're not a great team to watch. Pretty undisciplined.

I guarantee Pat would not allow them to disrespect our country and our flag. The past two home games they have knelt during the National Anthem and stayed in the locker room. Shame on them. As far as I’m concerned they can shut the program down.

more in regards to police brutality ( which has gotten way worse recently ). i understand we’ve made advancements when it comes to equality but we still have a long way to go.
BS, more black on black crime than any police brutality , which wouldn’t happen if perpetrators would respect authority

Ah yes, I do remember the important founding docs of this country reminding us to always respect authority. Even do it when those in authority abuse it
Can’t argue that there are a few ” bad apples” that will always abuse their authority. That has been around for thousands of years. Still doesn’t give people of any color the right to disrespect Authority.

Sure it does when there is abuse. Maybe the authority should try to bridge the gap instead

On the one hand, you’re proud these women were willing to exercise their right of Free Speech

....only to follow that up by applauding censorship? Personally, Madtownvol, I think you’re better than that.

**I should fairly note that I know little more than nothing about Parler; however, the irony in your post is, well, ironic. Besides, I just like messin witchya.

Please keep us updated on your younguns. I think you mentioned a tryout?

it was.. it is what it is back then...but today its they dont love their country.. they are being disrespectful to veterans.... yadda yadda yadda
I think it’s because a lot associate it with Kaep who said “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.” People equated not showing pride in the flag as disrespect. Of course it wasn’t just that incident with him. The pig socks is another example where he seemed to show animus towards the police and this country has typically considered those that put their lives at risk for our country as part of the country itself. I agree he had a right to kneel but I also agree people have a right to be pissed about it and the NFL and his team had a right to react. So like it or not, the LVs kneel and it gets associated with who started all this, Kaep. That’s one part of it. Part 2: Haven’t the LVs shown their feelings through other demonstrations this year? If so, and they decided to kneel then they did that knowing that would be seen as a controversial political statement. They were already protesting injustices in a different way but decided to change it to make a political one. They can certainly do that as they’re free citizens but to expect no backlash would be foolish. Meanwhile, politicians and media sit back and laugh because they’re enjoying the division. Those people don’t live in reality and don’t care about any of us. That’s why they tell us to do one thing and then do what they just told us not to do. We see how they react when reality knocks on their door. My guess is we aren’t done seeing it but I hope it doesn’t come to that.

It’s funny you applaud free speech in one sentence and then applaud it being taken away in another. Pure genius.

Learn your constitution dude. The right of free speech refers to the federal government punishing you for what you say but even that right is not unlimited--see the sedition act. The early kneelers, like Colin Kaepernick paid a price, like being blackballed by the NFL. But that was not an infringement of his free speech. It was a consequence imposed by his private sector employers. Despite the Fox newsy angst on this page, the culture has largely shifted on this matter. The NBA, professional soccer league among others not routinely begin games with a kneeling show of solidarity against racism. So, sorry that upsets you.

Parler, violated their terms of service, with their website hosts by allowing death threats and insurrectionist plots against the government to be posted and discussed. The fact that you equate that with players kneeling during the national anthem is telling.

Parler could restart on another host but apparently their business was quite fragile. They also had terrible cyber security, which is doubly bad because they collected a lot of personal information on their users. l

Kaepernick was not blackballed.

I’m just talking about your hypocrisy. You’re the one crying about it.
