Lady Vols Soccer ⚽️ SEC TOURNAMENT 11/3-11/10

I’m up here in Boston babysitting my nieces. And yesterday they announced the name of the new NWSL franchise which begins in 2026. And it doesn’t sound like people are happy with the name.
BOS NATION FC
What do y’all think?

I have a dear friend who is hoping to be a season ticket holder, and she swears she can't support them as long as they have this terrible marketing campaign and awful name. I'm sure she's being a little dramatic and we'll still support them but it's not good.

I asked her if the supporters group will call themselves BOS Nation Nation 😭

I also find the toomanyballs marketing super cringe and offputting, and I think I'm pretty squarely in the target audience for most women's sports.
Yeah, it’s horrible and cringe and disappointing. I have a feeling it’s gonna get scraped and they will have to come up with something else.

It all sounds like a parody. Is it a weird publicity stunt?

SEC

LOCK — Arkansas, Mississippi State, Auburn, Vanderbilt
BUBBLE — South Carolina, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Texas, Georgia, Tennessee, LSU, Texas A&M
DANGER — Alabama

The champagne hasn’t been popped, but it’s probably on ice for Mississippi State. The Bulldogs have Ole Miss, Kentucky, and Texas A&M left on the slate, with the latter of that trio likely the most imposing challenge left on the schedule. There’s a not insignificant chance that MSU will have at least a share of the league wrapped up by then, and they’ve got the head-to-head tiebreaker over Arkansas from a few weeks back. It’s now a matter of keeping the winning going and locking up a #1 NCAA seed.

Arkansas has the Texas schools and Ole Miss left which certainly helps their odds of finishing strong but also may be a detriment in their push for a top two NCAA seed. The Razorbacks’ top win is against RPI #19 Vanderbilt, which isn’t bad but also not going to push them over the top in that pursuit of a top seed. They might need to topple Mississippi State in Pensacola to feel confident come selection day.

Auburn and Vanderbilt are caught in a bit of limbo right now, both looking like locks to the field but also some ways off being serious threats for a top two seed. Auburn does have their win over Ohio State but also have the misfortune of missing both MSU and Arkansas in league play this year. The Tigers could definitely get back in the mix if they beat one or both in Pensacola. Vanderbilt’s an interesting case considering almost all of their big results are draws. The Dores may have hit their RPI ceiling for now though, as they get Florida and Alabama to close out, which is as close to a double whammy to the rankings as you’re going to see right now in the SEC.

South Carolina’s playing the role of compiler so far, racking up good but not great results across the board. The Gamecock could theoretically finish with more draws than wins, though they also have lost just once on the year which could make them a high variance team in the postseason. Barring something wild, Kentucky won’t have to worry about bubble heartbreak this year, even after last week’s loss to Vanderbilt. The Wildcats have a lot of seeding upside left with Auburn and Mississippi State left to play.

Things get a lot murkier after that point. Oklahoma looks to be in massive trouble right now after five straight without a win and just one league win overall. They’ll need to finish strong with the Missouri-Ole Miss-Florida trio coming up. The Sooners need the points to just make it to Pensacola. If they get there, they’ll probably need to win a few games to feel confident, as they are currently sitting on no RPI Top 50 wins with no more opportunities for them until the postseason.

That Texas’ best win is over the aforementioned Oklahoma probably isn’t a great sign for the Horns. They might get a little more leeway given the draw with Iowa, but besides those two results, the only thing on the Horns’ resume right now is a win at LSU which might not count for much if the Tigers keep slipping. An upset over Arkansas would change everything, but the regular season finale against Georgia in Athens could be pivotal to NCAA hopes.

Georgia’s biggest battle down the stretch might be against the .500 cutline. The draw at Florida definitely wasn’t part of the plan and leaves the Bulldogs just two games over .500 with three to play down the stretch. One more win would erase any doubt, but what happens with a draw and two losses or three losses? It doesn’t sound like a likely scenario, but Tennessee, Auburn, Texas is not one of the SEC’s easier run-ins. The Vols have a make-up game on the slate against Florida on the 30th, but the more important matches are the ones before it as the club looks for a first RPI Top 50 win. It feels like UT might need two to really feel confident going into the SEC Tournament.

LSU vs Texas A&M is for all purposes a bubble elimination game with both teams reeling at the moment. The Tigers look like they’re on their final breath after four straight losses, three of them by multiple goals. LSU’s resume is already paper thin, but a loss on Friday would drive them one game under .500 with two to play and SEC Tournament qualification far from secure. The Aggies have back-to-back losses, including a baffler at Alabama that leaves them one game over .500 which sounds a lot more foreboding when you consider they close out with Arkansas and Mississippi State. A&M does have some great Top 50 results, but it won’t matter if they’re under the .500 cutline, making Friday pivotal.

Alabama is still somehow alive on the bubble despite just picking up their first SEC win last week. Realistically, the Tide probably have to win out to leap up the ladder on the way to Pensacola. Even then, it might take multiple wins to end up on the right side of the bubble when all is said and done.

Lady Vol goalkeeper Ally Zazzara sat down with WVLT’s Rylee Robinson to chat about the reason she chose Tennessee, why she wants to pursue a degree in engineering, and her and the team’s goals for the season.

Plus, Zazzara walks us through her 100th career save in Tennessee’s 1-1 tie on Sept. 29 against Vanderbilt.

Last month, Zazzara was tabbed SEC Defensive Player of the Week after she secured her sixth consecutive shutout after the Lady Vols defeated No. 5 Memphis, 1-0.

Last season, she set a career-high and tied the program record for most saves in a game with 15 in Tennessee’s win over Xavier in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Zazzara is a redshirt junior. She is originally from Woodstock, Ga.

They were hoping to generate buzz per the PR firm, but it wasn't the kind of buzz they anticipated. Shocked that jokes about balls didn't land. You also have multiple Olympians and World Cup winners who are Bostonians that you just didn't mention in any of the buildup? Very odd.

QUICK KICKS
Down the Stretch

Georgia, now ranked 38th in the NCAA RPI rankings, hosts Tennessee in its penultimate regular season home match Friday evening. Now in a four-way tie for sixth place in the SEC, the Bulldogs are looking for a win after falling last week against No. 4 Mississippi State and tying Florida on the road, while the Lady Vols enter on a two-match losing streak after tough matchups last week against No. 6 Arkansas and No. 14 Auburn.

Georgia is looking to continue its recent success against Tennessee, having won the last two meetings. The Bulldogs upset the Lady Vols, 2-0, in the 2022 SEC Tournament quarterfinals before coming back to win, 2-1, last year in Knoxville, a victory that propelled the team to its first SEC East and Tournament titles. Despite trailing in the all-time series, Georgia leads 8-5-1 in home contests against Tennessee.

Brown's Best
Junior goalkeeper Jordan Brown has provided consistent excellence for Georgia throughout the season, earning the No. 29 spot in Top Drawer Soccer's Midseason Top 100 Player rankings. Brown was the third-highest ranked goalkeeper in the country and highest-ranked in the SEC. The Las Vegas native leads the SEC in saves (89) and ranks seventh nationally, while also leading the league in saves per game (5.93). She is also on pace to set new program records for saves per game and save percentage in a season. With last Sunday's shutout of Florida, she now ranks fifth in program history with 18 clean sheets.

Sunshine Stalemate
For the second-consecutive season, Georgia and Florida played to a 0-0 draw last Sunday in Gainesville. The Bulldogs were limited in scoring opportunities for the evening with Jocelyn Chinea posting the only shot on frame in the first half with a strong look. Georgia ratcheted up the pressure with four on frame in the second half, but all were saved by Florida keeper Alexa Goldberg. With the tie, Georgia increased its unbeaten streak against Florida to seven, dating back to the 2019 season.
