Lady Vols Softball Team Game Thread week 5

Sweep get out the brooms Lady Vols get the win!!!!! SC beat Bama 14 to 0 makes our 9 to 1 loss not look so bad.

Yeah as I posted in the Arkansas and South Carolina game threads, both those teams are senior-laden teams. They may not have five star talent, but that senior leadership counts for something.

I thank the Ole Miss coach a great deal for this final win. They get the first out in the bottom of the sixth and then he walks Gregg intentionally. He then decides to change pitchers to one that has walked 25 batters in 45 innings pitched. She then walks Vines who batted cleanup today. Then up comes Geer whom she gets behind in the count throws a high strike that Geer crushes three run homer. I was kind of amazed that he would decided to walk Gregg with the bases empty one out and no one on base, I was additionally shocked that he changed to that pitcher we hadn' t hit the starting pitcher very well in 12 innings pitched.
A very strange occurrence in that inning and resulted in us scoring 4 runs on 3 hits today.

You are down 1 run, you've got one out, you can't intentionally walk anybody, even a good hitter like Gregg--that was just plain stupid. You've got to pitch to the hitter there and try to get an out--no matter who it is--and not fall behind by even more runs. And while I'm not familiar with Miss.'s pitchers and so can't comment on that, the pitching change obviously compounded the problem.

Great to get the sweep, which we needed after the disappointing weekend against Arkansas. We pitched well--Karen W. said Moss didn't have her velocity today, which is why she and Ralph made the pitching change. Offensively, Vines had a huge weekend, Gregg and Geer with big, timely hits, Rowland did well in the first two games. Tough three games for Seggern at the plate, but she's a good player and I'm sure she will bounce back. This game showed why you need some hitters with power--you can be struggling as a team to get hits, but one big fly can win the game.

Ole Miss plays 2 seniors, 3 juniors, 4 sophomores, and 2 freshman. All their pitchers plus Cox their best player will be back next season. There are 8 freshman and 4 sophomores on the roster. Ole Miss coach Mike Smith may be building something.

Speaking of Coach Smith, he was wrong arguing the called-out on his player Cox at third in the top of the 7th. Seggern had the ball secure in her glove all the way through the tag.

Geer's home run was to straightaway center which is 220 feet and went over the camera platform. I'd say it went 230-235 feet. That's a long way for someone of Geer's slight build to hit a ball.

I was on the third base side, perfect view. The ball came loose. It was on the ground. Seggern picked it up real quick but it was on the ground. The ump making the call was the home plate ump, who was the first base ump yesterday and blew several calls, so no surprise there.

To her credit, Seggern played it well, but if you hooked her up to a lie detector I think you'd find the truth is the Ole Miss player was safe.

Florida hammers Auburn 7-0. Always nice to see Clint Myers shut out.

Myers is one of my least liked coaches but I would put Tim Walton below him. Myers has made Auburn relevant and recruited well . TW has the whole state of Florida to get who he wants and he does. I just plain hate everything Florida.

Well I was not there but I did see about 10 replays and I did not see the ball on the ground in any of them. Glad you made it to the game.

Ok. I didn't see that in the replays.

Vols4life - who will pitch against Liberty? Will we see Morrison (or Brumit) any at all?

That's the hope to try and get Morrison at least a few innings...Liberty is an okay program like Karen has said...so no pushover they have a brand new softball stadium that is sweet!!

They're coached by the legend Dr.Dot Richardson of UCLA fame who Ralph coached on the 96 Olympic team

They showed it several times on the broadcast. It did not appear to ever come out of the glove. That was the announcer's opinion also after watching the replay.

I just went back to the tape and if that ball was out which I still do not see then it is a lot of blind fools around!!

Hopefully the starters get out to a big lead and Ralph can make the subs he can...hopefully we'll get to see Weimer catch, Morrison pitch, Betts play, Hannon I don't remember where she is a back up but hopefully see these other girls play

The ball came out between the runners legs whether on the ground or bobbled. Spilt second, but it was out I could see the whole ball. But looks like I'm overruled.

None of the replays showed it popped out. If it did come out it came out for a millisecond and was somehow hidden from multiple camera angles.

WTBS, the homeplate ump is Ron Alexander who is freaking horrible. Probably the worst ump in NCAA softball. I still have nightmares with him single-handily handing Florida a series win back in 2013 with his microscopic strike zone in Gainesville. Of course we wound up beating them in OKC but in the end it cost us the SEC regular season title.

I've watched the replay a couple of times and I don't see the ball touch the ground or come out of her glove, maybe it moved in her glove. I don't doubt what you saw, but I can't see it on the replay.

As bad as we need to win these home games I don't think we'll see anyone but Arnold and Moss. We could possibly see one of them against Eastern Kentucky or Tennessee State in April but these are all huge games for Tennessee considering the ending schedule. If were leading by 10 at anytime Ralph may give Morrison a shot.
I personally believe their future as pitchers is weak after this season when we get the pitcher in the next class in here to go with Moss and Arnold.
I don't expect to see either of them unless were blowing someone out or getting blowed out ourselves.

As far as that third base call I watched it at least 7 times and never saw the ball on the ground. It was in the glove at all times.
