Lady Vols Softball Team Game Thread week 8

Murphy is mad at his team because they had multiple opportunities to score tonight and couldn't get a hit....just trying to light a fire under some of them....expect a dogfight tomorrow night....my guess is Littlejohn will start for Bama who starts for us I have no idea...a part of me wants to see Morrison because she is a drop ball pitcher and Bama is struggling on offense right now as they have all season

Murphy is also looking ahead...his team goes to Ole Miss, who just swept LSU who bama lost a game to, and then finishes with Auburn. With 7 conference losses already, they could easily finishes with 10 losses - unheard of for 'bama. He's trying to get his team to compete.

As for Morrison...really? LOL I've been wrong a lot but I don't think so.

Hey man if Murph can throw Moore out there Ralph can throw Morrison out there haha but I know we will see Arnold...and in between the Ole Miss and Auburn Series for bama is Washington yikes!!!

On another note if I were to take a guess will probably see Vines at DP, Rowland at 1st, and Holcomb in LF tomorrow night....McSwain is to me going through one of her swings right now....would also love to see if Weimer can get the start at catcher too

McSwain drops her back shoulder way too much and is consistently hitting under the ball. I think she had two pop ups tonight (iirc), and nearly all of her foul tips are the result of swinging below the ball.

It would be interesting to see her history of at bats. I doubt she hits many ground balls or line drives unless it's off a low pitch.

It was interesting to watch the video and see Megan come all the way back to 1st base to tag up just in case the CF caught the ball. Good base running, and/or good base coaching by Shipman.

I believe that was Sheriden Allen who pinch run for Gregg. Vines had to stop before getting to first to keep from running past her.

Her very long, looping swing has been mentioned. It is not a good softball/baseball swing. It is a long-ball swing--when the timing is right--but it is hard to time the ball with a swing that long. This is why her average is mediocre but she's got 5 homers. You're exactly right about her shoulder--she should keep it up. I'm surprised the coaches haven't worked on it. The vast majority of good average hitters have short, compact swings. A short swing enables the batter to see and wait on the ball a fraction longer, which is a big deal.

I know we've faced two very good pitchers, but we've got to hit better than we did tonight. Even with our good pitching, I doubt we'd beat Arizona like this. Then again....

Don't think UT has ever swept Bama in a 3-game series. It would be stellar to get that sweep, then head into LSU on a 19-game W streak. Luck has been on our side this series-- hope the rule of three stays with us.

Actually we have Ellen and Ivy renfroe helped the LV's do it a few years back with Raven, Gibby, and Dotson, shipman...in Tuscaloosa no less

One other thing the last time Murphy had his team at Sherri Parker Lee stadium was a Super Regional and Tennessee knocked his team out of the tournament.

Looks like the LVs won two back in 2007, but haven't swept a 3-series against Bama. So a W tomorrow would be historic. I'm sure Bama will fight hard to try and make sure it doesn't happen. A lot on the line for both teams.

Another H-U-G-E win--tip of the cap to Vines for her clutch hit and same to Moss. That's two straight big-time pitching performances, and two big-game winning hits. Thought we'd hit better tonight. Even though we all know hits are going to be hard to come by against these elite pitchers, we've got to hit better. We'll be the visiting team in some tough upcoming games and won't have the last at-bat advantage, so need to dial in at the plate. The bama coach was pissed after the game--yelling at his team. Since they are still here, let's go out and beat them a third time.

Vines has a great attitude when she is at bat and a wonderful swing! Enjoy watching her play.

Pitching has been key for TN as they have been slightly better than AL's pitchers. Aggregate pitching stats for the two wins:

TN allowed: 7 hits, 2 runs, 7 walks, 13 strikeouts, 238 pitches, 151/238 strike/pitch ratio or 0.63.

AL allowed: 9 hits, 5 runs, 8 walks, 9 strikeouts, 242 pitches, 136/242 strike/pitch ratio or 0.56.

....we can get one more night of great pitching out of Arnold and Moss! Thanks the stats.

The pitching ERA's for the season thus far in the SEC

Florida 0.75
Texas A&M 1.21
LSU 1.49
Bama 1.52
Tennessee 1.59
Miss St 1.73
Auburn 1.74
Kentucky 1.99
Ole Miss 2.31
Arkansas 2.42
Georgia 2.50
Missouri 3.21
South Carolina 3.23

So our pitching has done quite well this season and is the reason we've done so well to this point. The bad news is we have to face the three teams with the top ERA's this season in the rest of our games.

Hitting

Georgia .345
Tennessee .337
Texas A&M .317
LSU .314
Ole Miss .311
Florida .308
Bama .297
Arkansas .288
South Carolina .288
Auburn .285
Miss St .285
Missouri .283
Kentucky .278

We have to face two of the top five hitting teams in the league and Florida. The only way we beat Florida is to shut down their hitting and hope we can manufacture a run or two in those games.
Need another big win tonight before we hit the road for a tough 3 games.

The other key going forward to me is : Stop walking batters, Play error free and stop the crazy swinging at balls no where near the strike zone! Geer is hitting .250 in Sec games and .333 overall and she is the protection that we need for Gregg and now Vines. I look for Arnold starting and Moss in relief and us using the same starting lineup as last night. JMHO :twocents::twocents:

I heard some rumblings about our rank in the polls, blah blah blah...

There are 10 reg seasons games left this year. Aside from tonight's game, there are 9 games left and each one should be viewed as a super regional type series. Just gotta win 2 of 3.

Don't worry about rankings. At the end of the regular season UT will be right where they should be. It's make-it-or-break-it time for UT over the next 3 series.
