Lady Vols vs LSU

The coaches can definitely use this loss to motivate Tennessee for next weekend.

The streak got too blown up in the media. I wonder if it was starting to put a lot of pressure on the team and becoming too much of a focus. At any rate, it's over.

Will be a huge upset if we beat Florida their pitching is dominating best in softball. We'll need our pitching to keep the score like this game and hope we can scrape out a run or two. We definitely could go down all three games and scoring will be difficult.

You always hate to lose but going into series with Alabama and LSU and you win 4 of five your a very happy team.

If Moss and Arnold pitch up to their capability and the bottom half of Tennessee's order comes through with some hits and runs, then Tennessee has a chance to win a couple of games against Florida.

It is well known on this forum that I know very little about softball, but I do know one thing. If you can't score, you can't win.:eek:hmy:

Our bench is not bad at all....some girls over there could start at other SEC schools....but they wanted to be at Tennessee and work hard every day...Like Karen said she and Ralph always try and get them some playing time when they can

Agreed. Our bench is not bad at all.

A lot of people are asking more of Geer than she has to give. She is hitting .330 this season and her career average is right in the area. She hit .297 as a freshman, around .330 as a soph, .368 last season and .330 so far this season so she is about where she has always been. Ralph used to bat her two and since she is a righty that would seem to be a good place for her following Leach.

I have lost all confidence in the bottom of the order. I don't know what Ralph can do to get some production there. Lockman is swinging at pitches a foot outside and over her head. Weimer has a good swing today another ten feet and it is gone. We really need to shake that part of the order up I don't know who he can play to do that.

I think Gurley will give the LV more of a problem than Barnhill...we may see her twice and Barnhill once

Only way he can do that is inserting Rowland...I liked what Weimer brought today...hopefully she gets another look...Lockman is obviously the better defensive of the two so maybe start Weimer then bring in Lockman later in the game like today

You're right,Smallvol. But LSU pitching had the upper hand today. As others have said, sometimes there are games like this. Defense played well, but for whatever reason, our hitters were overcome by a really good pitching performance. Probably a good thing that our Ladies did not see Walljasper more in this series. These games do happen, though Caylan Arnold certainly deserved a better fate today. Now,go get the Gators,Ladies!!

I'd like to see him try Batts she has speed and make good contact with the ball. He may go with Rowland she hasn't been able to hit SEC pitching.

Ralph always tinkers with the lineup especially the outfield. The infield not so much unless it's out of necessity or first base.

Next season Geer will be gone so it makes sense to get Holcomb some experience at other spots in the outfield. I also expect Vines to get more time in the outfield too.

Rowland and Lockman are somewhat of an enigma at bat. Both of them are power hitters, but are unable to hit SEC pitching to any extent. It's worth remembering that this is only Rowland's first season so she gets a bit more slack than does Lockman.

But it would be nice if both of those could heat their bat up. Are they putting in extra duty in the batting cages?

That would be a question for DeerPark but I do know the freshman coming in next year Ashley Morgan can catch and play first base....and Rowland has shown more promise than Lockman has comparing freshman seasons although I think Lockman's was cut short because of an injury concussion maybe?

What is the media supposed to do, ignore it? If they didn't make a big deal about it, we'd get the whole "ESPN hates Tennessee" BS that people always throw out there.

I don't think it wore on the team at all. I think they ran into a really good pitcher who outdueled our really good pitcher.

This loss although painful happened at the right time if there is a such of thing. Now the pressure is off and I know it was pressure. I like others just do not understand Geer hitting in the 4th slot. There was a time she may have given Gregg protection but not now days. I would much rather see Seggren or McSwain although both strike out as much as Geer does. Geer just does not seem comfortable in the box this year either and is bad to take good strikes and swing at bad balls. Another pet peeve that I have about the ball that is hit to first base and the players (Vines) today and I have seen everyone else do it is trying to tag the runner when the base can be tagged much easier. If there are runners moving I get it but not without them. I always made my HS girls tag the base to prevent what happened today as well as players practically pulling the ball out of the glove as they run by. JMHO

This is sensible and I agree with it. The team seemed surprised a couple of weeks ago when the streak first started to be brought up so I don't think they were focused on it at all.

But I do understand the point about the streak being brought up by the media. In every media interview of one of the players I saw one of the questions asked was about the streak.

Frankly I'm glad it's over. It was making me nervous wondering when they were going to lose. I was starting to have stupid visions of the team going undefeated all the way to the championship game and then losing! Lol!

Ralph should have had every batter up at the front of the batter's box and crowding the plate as much as possible to take away that pitcher's out pitch.

You obviously don't know softball if you think winning is easier at LSU than A&M :eek:lol::eek:lol:

to this year, quite obviously. A&M has a much better record than Lsu this year, and Lsu has been reeling. So playing A&m is likely to be tougher. That may not prove to be the case--and wouldn't that be nice--but odds are it will be.

Did one of the announcers say that Arnold just started pitching when she was a sophmore in high school? I thought I heard that but wasn't 100% sure. My 5 year old was talking a lot when they were talking.

Why did Ralph mess with the lineup? Vines has energized the lineup batting 4th--has protected Gregg--and so why would you put her back to 2nd today? That made no sense. Holcomb has been productive, and yet he her takes her out of the lineup and inserts Morrison--who has not been in the lineup all year. Another head-scratcher. He has McLain on first late in the game with no outs and opts not to have her steal. Someone said she got thrown out in the first game of the series--didn't see that--but even so, how can you not give that another try? Stick with what has been working. Vines needs to stay in the 4 hole, and that probably means playing Holcomb because otherwise, we don't have anyone else suitable for the 2 spot, which had been occupied by Vines. I think we'll see the Weeklys go back to this lineup, with Lockman catching, against florida's right-handers--hoping our speed at the top can generate some pressure and some runs. I think Ralph got a little too, er, creative today.

RE Weimer: She has impressed me with the way she approaches hitting, and has gotten hits. Rowland also looks like someone capable of being a good hitter. They both have the stance, eye, swing that good hitters typically have. Doesn't mean they will hit, but...They are both new to SEC pitching, and Weimer has not played much. Rowland, too, has been in and out of the lineup too. I think we'll see Weimer against the left-hander.
