Lane Kiffin contrasts Tennessee fans and Los Angeles

Right up until the time he left, most people were still on board with him even though many were uncomfortable with the arrogance and his willingness to skirt the rules. He brought some bravado back to the program and took a team that was still outmanned and made them overachieve. the excitement was back after the Alabama game. He turned Crompton into an ok QB. Everybody was just butthurt over the way he left us. It was like coming home and finding a note from your smoking hot wife of one year that she was gone and wouldn't be back. Too many on here think of Tennessee as the ultimate football destination for any coach so it was a slap in the face to be so publicly dissed. It doesn't appear like he has any hard feelings about the way things went down and I am referring to the reactions of our fanbase after he left. It is beginning to look like things aren't going to turn out the way he would have liked for him there. Imagine how you would feel if at his age he has already reached his pinnacle job and been fired from it? Where do you go from there? We should just leave him alone and let go of the hate. Everybody would probably agree we are better off now anyway.

Wow. Excellent, well spoken summary. Good advice too. Thanks.

Johnny Majors said today on TSR that Kiffin "stopped the bleeding" and that Butch has done the same. !

Johnny will always take an opportunity to take a shot at Phil, and that's exactly what that comment was all about.

As for Lane, I really am not mad at him any more. I can't hate a guy for taking his dream job, I can totally disagree with the manner in which you do it and the level of class that he and a majority of his staff exhibited during their departure. I don't really advocate people being fired, but I'm not going to feel bad when he gets canned after this season. I'm a believer that some of stuff has happened for a reason and really hope that one day we talk about watching a new coach lead us on a Vol Walk down Butch Jones Avenue.

if kiffin had stayed longer we would probably be on probation or worse. i assume everyone remembers that he is a part of the reason USC wasnt bowl eligible the last couple seasons and has reduced scholarships. not to mention all of his players got kicked off the team because they were robbing gas stations. him only being here was the best thing that could have happened after he got hired. and he only recruited skill players. following it with dooley compounded the situation but it is what it is. **** it. hopefully butch can coach as well as he can recruit and bring us back

Kiffin may only be a secondary violation machine, but add in Orgeron and you have the Death Penalty just waiting to happen.

Did we have the NCAA camped out in Knoxville by the time they left?

And I may be wrong, but didn't the NCAA visit Oxford by the time Coach O left?

Luckily, they weren't in Knoxville long enough to open their full bag of recruiting tricks...just my opinion of course.

I remember a WR (can't recall his name) from Memphis that Kiffin coined as the best WR in the country. Orgeron showed up at the kids house drunk and stupid and cussed his Grandmother so the kid had to go to UGA where he was seldom seen or heard from again.

I sure hope Malone doesn't make that same mistake.

The day Dooley was hired I was optimistic but from that day he disappeared. You didn't see or hear from him for weeks and when you did, the glass was always half empty. Not to mention that he couldn't coach or make halftime adjustments.

The refreshing thing about Coach Jones is that from day one he has been available, transparent and always has a positive message.

After reading this, UT only has the 17th most passionate fan base???

Secondly, I'll never cease to be amazed how a Kiffin post can draw the most responses.

Sometimes people need to vent. Have you ever been married. Remember your response should always be "Yes Dear".

Kiffin leaving was good because it brought in Dooley, which was doomed, which led to your hiring your (barely) third choice?

Wow, rationalization reaching new heights here.

I never quite hear what you say because of that sweet little gator tail eyeing me on your left. Those certainly are not bumps and I'm no racist.

He also said that a UT fan interrupted his child birthday party and asked for a picture for a family... Stay classy San Diego

Not only that, Biopsyman, LK is giving the UT and its fans free publicity. His comments reinforce what we already know, that the Vols have the most passionate fanbase in the nation. That's positive publicity. That the SEC is special because fan support of their teams is at a whole other level. That's positive publicity. It's far better than the laughing joke we made of ourselves by pure stupid behaviors when he left. That includes taking out an anti-Kiffin billboard in LA, nominating him for that girl thing a magazine was running. Harping on and on about his leaving like a jilted girlfriend. The fact he didn't hurl insults back at us just made us look that much worse. Many UT fans just don't get it.

But the hate of many fans here blind them to this as well as the fact of those fans who couldn't respect a child having her birthday party with her family. I'm not happy with what LK did, indeed resent him for it. But I think and hope I'm capable of being fair and not demonizing someone just because they didn't do what I wanted them to do. I think he is already being rewarded for what he did as the handwriting is on the wall for him. Karma is coming and we as fans should just shut up, sit back and watch it make its bombing run.

He said he can go to a restaurant in LA for two hours without anyone coming up to him? Sounds like they're pissed off with a crap season last year.

No. I used to live out there as well as in Arizona. It wasn't unusual to see coaches, celebrities, even a politician or two. You saw them driving on the freeways, stuck in traffic like everyone else. You saw them at restaurants and even fast food chains. You saw them at sports events. Once in a while, you passed them walking down the street. Except for paparazzi or a tourist or two, nobody paid attention. As a matter of fact, in Corbin, KY, Johnny Depp periodically comes back and nobody bothers him as he walks down the street. Same thing with Big Ben the Steeler QB when he goes home. At a Denny's in Tucson, I sat one table across from Sean Penn some years ago, Except for people casually waving as they walked by going to or from their table, no one bothered him at all. As a student decades ago in California, it was not unusual to see a TV show or movie portion being shot on campus, the street, etc. Except for small crowds that drifted by now and then, people went about their business as usual. In my time as an out-of-state student in California, I saw the guy who played Marcus Welby, M.D., Clint Eastwood, Raquel Welch who actually asked me for directions to the college library. The cast of the Mod Squad and the Norte Dame coach, Ara Parseghian as he was doing a Ford commercial on campus. He spent his breaks chatting with me and my girlfriend of the time (sorry, Shirley) for over a hour as the crew fidgeted with lighting and equipment problems. He confided in us that the car he was advertising he wouldn't own one if they gave it to him. I don't recall the model. When done he offered to have our bicycles put into a vehicle and hop in his limo so he could drop us home. But we declined because our coed dorm was just steps away. During the whole time, people just walked by, some stopped for a few moments then just left. The only reason we stayed was that he just kept talking to us. I don't know why. Probably bored. Point? LK being ignored would not be unusual in the LA area at all.

Of course he would try to spin it to make himself sound good. No, we were happy to have a winning record but there was still a lot left to be desired.

A recruiting class with some class...

A better record in the SEC.

A coach that knew how to show respect to the SEC but still be confident.

We weren't upset to see you go, Lane, we were pissed that you lied to our faces and at the first opportunity, dropped us to go out west. Honesty is really important, at least in the south, so when you tell us you're gonna bring back Tennessee, than try to sneak out like a weasel in the night, we get a little pissed off.

Just be lucky the mob didnt catch you that night. A good ol' fashion dog whoopin' before you headed out, might have done you some good.

Hope we meet in a bowl soon!

I don't think he realized at the time just how lofty a coaching position Tennessee really was. USC was his dream job and I get that, but he should have understood you don't just up and leave a top tier SEC program...YOU JUST DON'T.

Agreed... Signed Derek Dooley

That was a long post, I got winded reading it to myself... I don't think ppl here are just running up to him wherever he goes. I mean, if I saw CBJ out tomorrow, I might say, "Good luck this season, Coach." IF I said anything at all besides just head-nod or something.

Lame Kittin just wanted it to sound like he was a big time star here bc we are so simple and not cool like LA. I've been all over the world, including LA and San Diego, New York, and the list goes on and on, but there are no better ppl than the ppl of the southeastern United States, and Tennessee ppl are the best of the lot.

As my family and I worked our way around in the military and then with my job, we knew that we had to get back to Tennessee for that very reason.

I don't think I put down Tennessee folks or southern folks. I'm one myself. I can easily agree with you how nice we are. But every group of people have both their jackasses and mean-spirited factions. I have experienced it firtshand and you even see it on this board from time to time. My point was, Kiffin being ignored in LA isn't unusual. It happens with public figures far more famous than he will ever be. Perhaps my second point is, Vols fans need to let LK go (Dooley too) instead of getting oral hemorrhoids and spout verbal excretement every time these names are mentioned. It just feeds stereotypical misconceptions have about us. And actually makes LK look civilized compared to us.

I didnt mean to insinuate that you were putting southern folk down. I was more disagreeing with Kiffin's comments than yours.

Trust me, I am far removed from being pissed or butt hurt by Kiffin or Dooley, but I dont agree that I should completely forget them. Hell, I dont ever want Tennessee to make those mistakes again.

You know what they say about the past, right?

We're on the same page. Let's enjoy the Butch Jones era. I'd love to see Butch & co. road grade the entire SEC, lay down orange tinted asphalt and paint it with white lane (no pun intended) stripes.
