If you're gonna do this, do it right:

Neyland/Fulmer/Dickey/Majors/Barnhill/Wyatt/Jones(and moving up)/Battle/Kiffin/McDonald/Robinson/Dooley

Jones is not higher only because of his brevity, and Kiffin is not lower for the same reason.

Neyland/Fulmer/Wyatt/Majors/Dickey/Battle/Jones/Kiffin/Dooley

Don't forget Barnhill he's got a pretty good winning percentage . When he took over for Neyland when he went to the service. In fact Mr. Barnhill did a pretty good job.

Barnhill may need to move up a little.

Ok ,I show a little favoritism to Mr.Barnhill because he's in my family tree. If you study the history you'll know why. His record speaks for itself. This is why I love UT. I also believe Butch is what we need he's the coach of the future, he mixes the old with the new. He wants to be here.

Neyland and Fulmer are tops.

Dickey and Majors occupy the rung below them.

People forget that Majors and Fulmer rebuilt the Vols. The best Majors years were when he elevated Fulmer to #2 at the end of his tenure. People also forget that as good as we were then, when Fulmer became #1 there was an immediate improvement again.

As for the bottom - Kiffin and Dooley have a special level of Hell to occupy in Vol folklore.

1. Neyland

2. Majors
3. Fulmer

Majors rebuilt the program, Fulmer took it on to win the NC. My personal opinion Majors would not have won a NC at TN and Fulmer would not have been able to rebuild the program . It took both men to get us the 1998 National Championship. Jmo.

you people with this crap really kill me....ya Majors is the reason Fulmer won a NC 10 years after he took over the program.

Majors was a damn good coach, and definitely improved the program from where it was previously by a large margin. and then FULMER improved it more, and got us to the top. You know the reason that our fans have such high expectations? Because Fulmer won so much, because Fulmer recruited well..

To try and put Majors over Fulmer is completely ridiculous.. if it really is all about wins and losses. Fulmer has the most wins and highest winning percentage.. Is it about championships? Fulmer definitely wins that race also. And what Majors did at another school does not mean anything.

I swear people are so desperate to make it seem firing Fulmer was not the biggest mistake UT has made in the last 50 years that they will do anything to try and discredit Fulmers accomplishments. It is sad....

Majors: 185-137-10......116-62-8 at UT
Fulmer: 152-52

I would have to say that Fulmer was better.

I would say that Majors is probably slightly better than Fulmer. You have to take in to consideration the situation that Majors had.

At the time, the program was real weak and he had to build the roster from the ground level. So, every win was a blessing.

Fulmer, on the other hand, inherited the program after the roster was full of future NFL players.

Yes, Fulmer won a National Championship but he did it with a good roster from the 1st day he stepped in to the job.

1964-69 Tennessee: 46–15–4Head Coach

May be the only UT coach to have an All American every year he coached.

Not the only one!!! Jim McDonald was the head coach in 1963 and only in 1963 and Steve DeLong was a Junior. He was an All-American.

Now let me see who was on Kiffin's team in 2009. Maybe Eric Berry made the All - American list. I will get back to you on that one.

Eric Berry was an All American in 2009. So Kiffin is on the list of coaches who had All American's on the team each year that he coached. Along with Jim McDonald who had Steve DeLong in 1963.

1963 - Jim McDonald (Steve DeLong)

2009 - Lane Kiffin (Eric Berry)

The only good thing about Doug Dickey was his son Daryl who led the SugarVols to a 1986 Sugar Bowl win over heavily favored Miami.

I hate Doug Dickey.

Never really understood all the hate directed toward Dickey. Good coach, put power T on helmet if I remember correctly, and oversaw athletic dept through best level of success in UT's history. Bristly personality yes, but a winner. We need more people like that on the hill.

You really need to go back and read the history of UT football. Doug Dickey did lots of good things while he was coach.

Wrong.

Majors last ten: 57-49-4
Fulmers last ten: 84-41

There you go again. Interrupting their rants with those pesky facts.

People also forget. UT gave Majors 7 or 8 years of mediocrity or worse to get on his feet. And then, after the great 85 team, he great under achieved in 86 and 87 and then started the 88 season 0-6.

Ol' Johnny was given more than enough chances and he did OK. But, as the record shows, he was not a Hall of Fame coach and never will be. Neyland and Fulmer are.

However, I will say this: if UT had hired Majors instead of Battle. Johnny would have taken advantage of the no limit recruiting and brought in 125 freshmen every year and the Vols would have continued the level of play that Dickey had brought them to. That mistake by Woodruff is almost as damaging as Hamilton's hirings of Kiffin and Dooley.

Also put artificial turf in the stadium, one of the first to experiment with it. It was called Doug's Rug at the time. I have a commerative piece from the end zone with attached plaque, from when it was removed.

Yes. Was good AD too. He got more respect back in the day with the SEC and NCAAA. He kept us out of some things that could have gone a lot worse.

Dickey turned the program around after some bad times. In fact, there are only two coaches going back to the Neyland era who have left the program in better shape than when they arrived, and those two are Dickey and Majors.

It's strange how people choose to remember things.

You must be confused, Lane Kiffin was never a coach here.
