Never really understood all the hate directed toward Dickey. Good coach, put power T on helmet if I remember correctly, and oversaw athletic dept through best level of success in UT's history. Bristly personality yes, but a winner. We need more people like that on the hill.

People hate Hart on here too for no reason. He's doing things right, hasn't made a poor decision yet and people hate on him. Just comes with the territory I guess don't understand it. Hamilton I get, was absolutely awful. Dickey and Hart....don't understand.

If we're talking 100 years it would go something like:
Neyland > Fulmer > Dickey > Majors > Barnhill > Bender > Banks > Clevenger > Wyatt > Jones > Battle > McDonald > Britton > Kiffin > Robinson > Dooley.

People hate Hart because they fell for all the Gruden BS and were upset when it didn't happen.

In slight fairness to Hamilton, he was an excellent fundraiser and had to deal with Bruce's BBQ and Delmonico's APR issue.

Huge improvements on facilities on his watch.

Yes, there were screw ups too.

Flame away.

Dickey was an excellent coach, only left to got to his alma mater. Adolph Rupp said he was crazy to leave the "garden of Eden". Battle's early success was due to Dickey's recruits. He had us at the top of the college football world. Didn't do so well at Florida, they didn't have much support then. Dickey also brought in the first black athlete to the SEC, beat the h*ll out of Alabama, and left the program with a ton of great players.

May have been a good fundraiser but was just awful fiscally as evidenced by our budget deficits and really bad contract negotiations with Fulmer and Dooley. Love the facility upgrades/improvements but was there a way we could've financed them more effectively.... $200mil in the hole seemed a bit steep.

Also put artificial turf in the stadium, one of the first to experiment with it. It was called Doug's Rug at the time. I have a commerative piece from the end zone with attached plaque, from when it was removed.

I heard the main reason they put it down was to prevent Vandy cheerleaders from grazing during half time.

Maybe that's it. Dickey came from Florida and people hated him too for no good reason IMO. Maybe no matter how successful the UT AD, some people are gonna hate em if they came from rival schools? I'd like to think not.

The problem was he secretly met with Fla before we played them in the bowl game then lied about it. The next thing is his jealously of Majors success.

Bruce's BBQ fiasco was made worse by Hamilton and they served him up on a platter
to the NCAA because they needed them out of here because of the Kiffin fiasco...another Hamilton hire... followed by Dooley... thats why they don't care for Hammy...

Dickey did a lot of good here, economically and facility wise, and especially leadership wise...no one doubted who was in charge with himself and Joe Johnson running the show...

Dickey also won 2 SEC titles and while he was AD, he did terrific job of steering us away from NCAA sanctions, especially in football.

Tennessee was the first school with an on-campus stadium with artificial turf.

The only good thing about Doug Dickey was his son Daryl who led the SugarVols to a 1986 Sugar Bowl win over heavily favored Miami.

My old boss and now my colleague who played his last game of his career in that game was a dl. He said he felt like he played safety that game because the offensive line was so good that day.

I'm guessing you meant he played for Miami because our DL destoryed their OL the whole game.

I remember they sold pieces of turf after the '93 season. Did they sell the other rugs as well?

This! Not only a very good football coach by IMO a damn good AD. He never let the school get shafted when talking bowls, and holding our ground with SEC powers. I believe the hate you see here is based on the poster's who don't have a clue who he was, when he coached and our records during that time. I'll try to play nice the are very uninformed.

How is Kiffin ahead of Dooley?

As bad as he was, Dooley never made a mockery of our program.

Perhaps Dooley didn't make a "mockery" of the program, but he damaged it more in his 3 disastrous/losing seasons than Kiffin did with his secondary violations and shameful exit.
