Latest Coronavirus - Yikes

I don't really care about churches, synagogues, mosques, etc. being mandated as essential services. I am curious what our board thinks about one statement from POTUS completely overriding decisions being made on a state level. Is this type of absolute Federal control over state decisions okay?

Not okay for the president to do that. Would set a dangerous precedent IMO. If there is an issue of a governor's orders being unconstitutional (which IMO there is in a couple of states), the DOJ needs to step in.

I think President Trump is correct about Church Services. What's going on in the blue states seems a lot like religious persecution.

Agreed. We have a few on the board more than happy for the Feds to tell the states what they can and can't do. And they ain't Democrats.

Not disagreeing that he's correct, but if he can step in and override governors on this, that opens the door for liberal presidents in the future to override red state governors to fit the left's agenda. Works both ways. DOJ needs to step in.

but there’s a lot we don’t know

About the entire disease. Like why some people get it and barely show symptoms, but for some it's really bad, and for many of those, it's deadly.

Genetics? I suspect we'll know more about this discrepancy in months or years, but this would really be good to know now when trying to figure out how to best manage it.

Trump is 40 months into his presidency, and he still doesn't understand a basic component of the United States Constitution. He thinks he can override governors on matters related to their individual states. I'm sure that his policy advisers have corrected him on this in the past. So, why does he keep saying that he can? Trump has done this multiple times now. The guy is either slow, or just plain drunk with power... or a combination of both.
He understands the constitution.... the courts ruled states don’t have the right to tell them how to worship.

He can’t override them.... it’s been ruled that these states can’t shut down church services

Trump's tweet asserted that he (not the courts) had the right to override governors on an issue related to their state, and that is wrong. So, no... it doesn't appear as though he understands the constitution.

First day watching trump? He knows the states can’t shut it down so he claims he makes them keep it open.... it’s really that simple.

That doesn't make any sense. He claimed that he could do something, that he doesn't have the power to do... and yes, it is that simple. You are trying to rationalize one of Trump's completely false claims into being something smart. That's ridiculous.

I tried reading this and all I heard was a needle of a record player being drug across a record.

It’s just controlling the message.... if you pay attention to how trump works the social media angle.... I know he doesn’t have the power and the majority on this forum probably do as well...... there is a large segment of our society doesn’t know when state rights end and federal rights begin.... the church going people will be going.... Thank you president trump for standing up for our rights..... we are essential.

Calling for churches to reopen could really backfire on Trump. Some churches that defied shut down orders became pest houses. If we're going to watch football in stadiums with 6' social distancing rules in place, how can it be safe to sit butt to butt in church? I think it is too early to reopen churches, especially since the elderly make up such a large percentage of worshippers.

He’s pandering to his uninformed base. They don’t know he has no power to do so. They just see the words and believe them. It happens all the time.

I missed the part where church is mandatory for the elderly.

Wow, great source.🙄

Do you have any idea how well regarded propulica is?

In 2010, it became the first online news source to win a Pulitzer Prize, for a piece[4] written by one of its journalists[5][6] and published in The New York Times Magazine[7] as well as on ProPublica.org.[8] ProPublica states that its investigations are conducted by its staff of full-time investigative reporters, and the resulting stories are distributed to news partners for publication or broadcast. In some cases, reporters from both ProPublica and its partners work together on a story. ProPublica has partnered with more than 90 different news organizations, and it has won five Pulitzer Prizes.

Trump has zero authority to tell governors what to do re: churches. The end.

We don't live in an autocracy no matter how much some of you Trump worshipers wish otherwise.

Wrong. This is a health issue. The government absolutely has the right and responsibility to manage any social gathering as it sees fit during a crisis.

Just watch this fall when the 2nd wave hits, Trump declares martial law and postpones the election. 😆
