Other high quality studies have measured the decrease of particle projection with surgical masks with much more data than 4 coughing patients and the reduction is quite significant.

If you want to argue that hospital quality masks worn properly are ineffective, I don't think you will have much success. These masks have been used for many many decades by doctors to limit the spread of disease.

My point about the mask culture war (maybe the stupidest political argument of all time) is that a large number of people are NOT wearing hospital quality masks. DIY masks are irregular, and scientific examination requires constants, so any claims to their effectiveness could not be tested.

Again, the partisans on both sides are proving they are idiots arguing over this.

The effectiveness of medical masks isnt confined to the mask itself. My understanding is that health care professionals change their maks and gloves with each patient and also wash or sanitize their hands in between.

I am willing to bet not even medical professionals are actually following that strict a procedure out in the real world. Of temporary masks that get disposed of, then disposal of gloves, then hand washing, then gloves, then mask again.

The efficacy of masks as they are being used hasnt been tested, and at least NGV, and Kiddiedoc, as well as others, have stated that current practices are probably not helping.

Of course, and doctors are also wearing other PPE like googles or shields when near an infected patient.

My point is this argument is based wholly on politics not on squeezing out a little more protection. People are only presenting the data, often mis-representing, which helps their side of a truly stupid debate.

Masks alone wouldn't protect you the wearer at all in a mist of Covid particles; you can get those particles on your eyeballs or in your ear even wearing a respirator without face shield. That's why masking won't help people in a shared air office space when they have an ill co-worker.

However, it also won't help keep your neighbor safe from you if you are an asymptomatic carrier (which is the supposed goal) if your mask is simply an ill-fitting cutting from a tie dye t-shirt.
