Latest Coronavirus - Yikes

This is how my BIL and his wife are currently. They go nowhere but the streets of their neighborhood. They pick up groceries and leave them in the garage for two days. In Texas. They will die of botulism before they get corona. They think businesses should stay closed until next year, but of course he can work from home and she doesn't work so that's an easy position to take. They're apparently ok with the grocery people risking imminent death to supply their oat milk. My wife has asked them about coming here and their list of rules is moronic. We would not be allowed to go anywhere or see anyone for two weeks before their arrival, and we can't go anywhere or do anything while they're here. They will not stay in a hotel on the drive here or back, which is baffling to me considering there are probably rooms that haven't been used in 3 months. My daughter has a dance recital prior to their arrival date and they said you can pick that or us. It's unreal. I know the wife is driving the train but the BIL is onboard and is very supportive. Their parents have offered to visit but due to their reckless grocery shopping and hair appointments they would only allow them to see their grandson from the street. I feel bad for my wife, she is pregnant and due in August and I don't think her brother will even come for it "because he could kill their parents". So she's already got a lot on her plate and now he's acting like a mental case. It's like this whole thing has flipped some switch in people's head. He's a nice enough guy but I will never be able to forget how he's acted during this. I'd already written the wife off but her true colors have come out.
good grief, are they aware that they are saying it doesn't transmit between surfaces now? So leaving your groceries out for 2 days is dumb. THey need to turn off the news and just live their life just like we've done in every other pandemic. Be smart but there is no reason to live at home in fear forever. That is not living.

For grins and giggles I went back about 1000 pages and skimmed through the thread. This was a crazy-train rolling down the tracks at max speed.

Trump got some things right.
Trump got some things wrong.
There are A LOT of tweets deleted by Twitter or the Tweeter (looking at you EL).
GAvol got donuts delivered from his sister wearing a plastic shopping bag.
People went to stores using plastic bottles, undies, and maxi pads as masks.
The predictive models were laughable.
Some of us believe whatever "scientists", government overlords, or the media tells us.
Cuomo was a cluster of epic proportions.
In hindsight this should have been a 2 week precautionary event with everyone afterwards (except the vulnerable) going on about their lives as normal.

Cuomo has said everything that could be said and did the flips in a short amount of time. Truly astonishing how he received any praise at all.

Nailed it.

In hindsight, humans are not very good at foresight.

Wow. That is seriously amazing to me. I'd say I am at 4-6 weeks of almost complete normalcy at this point.

I've been working from home since March 16th. The earliest I expect to return to the office is August unless they just scrap their plan altogether. And honestly, it wouldn't shock me if we do end up accelerating the plan given the data we are seeing. If the slow burn continues and shows that the risk of runaway isn't present this summer, why wait?

McRib expects screening to enter the hospital to continue until year's end. I expect shortly after school starts in the late summer, assuming no outbreak / 2nd wave, the hospital will rescind the order.

The only useful thing that has come out of this COVID panic was it made it easy to identify who the gullible stooges are. I still have friends who stay indoors as much as possible, leave their mail outside three days before bringing it in the house, and sanitize all groceries before bringing them inside. Some refuse to get together because they are scared they will get Coronavirus. They are still doing all this despite the data that has pointed to a large over reaction. I really don’t know if I will be able to remain their friend. It’s not malicious or even intentional, but I just lost all respect for them.

I'm in some kind of weird place on this.

I know the data well. I've never lived in personal fear - though I've had a lot of concern, seeing that 100-200k deaths was very likely. But, despite not having "personal fear," I'm still taking precautions.

Back in March, we were wiping down groceries (mainly because I didn't know how many local infections we had because we had been testing so poorly). But, once I got a handle on infection rates, we dropped that.

However, we haven't eaten in a restaurant since March. I have not seen a friend or colleague since March, other than my every-other-Sunday volunteering at Church for media for the live-stream.

It's been an easy choice to make, so I've said no big deal.

That's going to be changing soon. My sister is getting remarried at the end of the month and we're heading back to TN for the wedding. My wife is actually a little nervous about having the kids there, but I'm not at all. We are heading to Michigan after the wedding to stay with my wife's cousin's family for a good part of July. They have a house on a little lake there and we'll just quarantine with them. That'll enable us to have my wife's mother (immunocompromised) and grandmother (97) come see us while there and not be too worried about giving them any virus. Then, after that, I imagine we'll try to return life back to normal for at least the rest of summer and then we'll see if fall brings a resurgence.

Perhaps if we had more skin in the game for future predictions???. A foreskin, if you will.

I've learned a lot during this time about how to read between the lines of both sides being wrong to figure out what is actually going on.

The easiest lesson: both sides went super-nova over the top during this on their particular doomsday scenario. The left believed Covid was a pandemic D-day, and the right believed the response was an economic D-day.

Both have been very bad, don't get me wrong, but we are learning how to mitigate the disease and getting better treatments and we just added 2.5 million jobs back in May.

The tough thing about "both sides are wrong" is that they are also always both right about "those guys are wrong and they are assholes".

Please remind of this a lot in future discussions.

I admit, I was one who thought economic calamity was imminent. Still not sure how we avoided it, tbh.

I don't anticipate one. I believe we will see fluctuations in the numbers of positive cases but the hospitalizations and fatalities will remain low or nonexistent.

Unless we see enough infections over the summer to get places like TN or Georgia up to 30% or so of infected population, then I think we'll see it this winter on top of the normal flu season. But, I think it will look like just that - a really bad flu season. It seems to be pretty rooted in the population, so I don't see what keeps it from lighting off this winter unless it just burns through the population this summer.

I say 30% or so because it just seems that this virus must not be novel to everyone's immune system. The rate of asymptomatic cases is just so high and within 5 days, large number of infected people are showing healthy IgG response, which seems very fast for that antibody pathway. There appears to have already been some work done for some people from other coronaviruses that is speeding up IgG response. And perhaps that's why we are seeing these areas of highest infection continue to drop like a rock. And if we get through the next few weeks after the protests in New York without a flare up, then I don't see how we can deny that the "herd immunity" fraction must be lower than we thought.
