if there is verifiable evidence about the unique rarity of 4 polar positive amino acids in a row which strongly indicates engineering, that could be the "smoking gun".

If/when America is linked to the funding of the lab or the research, woah Nelly (as Keith Jackson would say).

Here's the paragraph from the MIT article that has me wondering just how messed up this could get.

But my #3 is kinda split. I'm not stating with certainty they were developing something with nasty intent as a bioweapon. It's possible, but I also wouldn't be surprised if they took a naturally occurring animal virus and played around with the intent being scientific research that could be used for vaccine developlment. Seems like every year China has some new virus pop up. I do believe they were modifying for research at the very minimum.

But I also wouldn't be surprised if they, or other govts across the world for that matter, did bioweapon research and let something escape on accident.

SARS and others have been animal to human. AIDS too.

In this case there doesn't appear to be any evidence for the animal to human and considerable circumstantial evidence that it came from the lab.

Yes. As I understand it GoF research is primarily designed to learn about virus behavior and do preventative science (eg. vaccine development). I don't doubt the Chicoms also do bioweapon development but as you suggest not all virus modification is bioweapon related (most is not - or at least the NIH type).

My intent with #3 was not to make a claim on the "why" of the modification.

I would lean heavily towards an accidental leak from a lab as well. I do have a slight notion that the leak may have been intentional. Watching a lot of post-apocalyptic/zombie flicks helped fuel this idea too.
