Now that's certainly a black and white two dimensional way to look at it.So you are saying the people in local education are petty and vindictive individuals who used children to get back at the administration?
Simply not true. Most local school districts would be in red areas. Just look at Trump's favorite map.People at the local level in most public school systems in the country are so far left that Trump had absolutely nothing to do with them.
Well I appreciate you taking the time to reply. She doesn't really represent the teachers. She represents the teacher's union. I do not know what her motives were. If she had the safety of students and teachers as her driving force, then good for her; I may disagree with her recommendations, but not her motivations. To the extent she was playing a political game, shame on her and the people she was playing against. The politicization of COVID was sickening, on both sides, and I have nothing but disdain for anyone who let politics trump their common sense and compassion.
However, there was still a great deal of confusion well into the 20/21 school year. My son was going into his senior year and football was a huge part of his high school life. It looked as if the season may be cancelled all the way into August (but they kept practicing and nervously hoping for the best). School started with many adjustments, (half the students coming each day). The football season was played but attendance was very limited; which I personally found to be stupid and voiced that opinion at every level. (my son was all region, all state honorable mention, his team won the region, and lost a last second heartbreaker in the quarter finals). Things continued to return to normal as the school year progressed. All students returned to a daily schedule. My son was also on the basketball team and attendance was restricted to two people per player in our district (masks had to be worn). We played out of district games where there were no restrictions and the gym was packed and almost no one wore masks. We had other games scheduled with teams from districts that cancelled their entire season. It was nuts - and my personal stance was always that we were being overly cautious restrictive.
Side note: My daughter ended her GT college experience at home, on line, away from friends, and had her 2020 spring college graduation cancelled. She entered the job market at the peak of COVID hysteria.
It sucked for everybody. My stance was always, let's just carry on as normal with a few added precautions and see what happens. But I understood the perspectives of those wishing to be more cautious.
As far as states go, I give GA an A.
As far as counties within GA go, I give our county an A.
So I and my family were pretty lucky by comparison, but it still sucked.
I do not know a teacher who is a member of the NEA. Why would I conclude that they are represented by the NEA?Well I appreciate you taking the time to reply.
I fail to see the distinction between representing the Teachers, and representing the Teachers Union.
Does the Teachers Union not represent the Teachers? The Teachers Union certainly doesn’t represent the Students?
Does the Union bargain on behalf of all, or just those that join? Are there separate pay structures and benefits packages? I really don’t know.I do not know a teacher who is a member of the NEA. Why would I conclude that they are represented by the NEA?
The teacher's union represents the teacher's union. I would agree with much of what they do but certainly not all.
I have selected not to be a member of any union during my career. Unions aren't much of a thing in GA - for better and worse.
Let me make it clear. I fully support the concept of unions. I'm even more of a fan of organizations functioning in a way whereas their employees do not need feel the need to unionize. Every union contract ever has been signed by management.
And if the Teachers Union does not even represent all Teachers, than they certainly do not represent Students?I do not know a teacher who is a member of the NEA. Why would I conclude that they are represented by the NEA?

They have absolutely ZERO impact in GA.Does the Union bargain on behalf of all, or just those that join? Are there separate pay structures and benefits packages? I really don’t know.
You don’t seem to have much nice to say about Teacher’s Unions. You would certainly know more about them than I would. They have absolutely ZERO impact in GA.
There are five states that prohibit collective bargaining; Texas, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. The simple answer is yes, all states have teacher's unions, but they do not all have the same rights and benefits. These can vary by state.
I don't have much negative to say either. My whole educational career was in GA - and unions play zero role. There have been times when I thought we certainly needed them and times I was thrilled that we didn't have them. If I lived and worked in a union state, I'm sure I would have a more informed opinion. You don’t seem to have much nice to say about Teacher’s Unions. Fair enough. I don’t know much about them either - other than what they trumpeted during the Covid debacle.I don't have much negative to say either. What part of the state are you from?? I'm interested he Southeastern corner of the state and we had almost no restrictions at all here.
