Lawrence Frank - Boston Celtics Assistant

Goodman was just on Knoxville radio, couple of notable comments (from memory, paraphrased):

Goodman is from Boston and knows / really likes Frank. (Read into that as you will)

Believes Frank is perfect fit for Tennessee, and that its the only non-NBA job he'd be interested in. Thinks he liked it here as an assistant. Says excellent recruiter, very hard worker, well-respected. Says if Tennessee put right package together - money and security of long-term deal - could land him. Frankly (no pun intensed) the guy sounded like he was toting Frank's water, for whatever reason. Later, they mentioned the "second-tier" tweet, after he was off the air.

When asked about other candidates:

Said he wouldn't touch Brown "with a 10' pole". Says he's been everywhere, pi**ed off everyone along the way and wouldn't be here long. Says he would be the worst hire.

Says Shaka Smart and Greg Marshall are in the mix. Lead off by listing Rick Byrd - so take his "sources" on the situation, accordingly.

Radio hosts (don't know their names on WNML) remarked that their were several far better "homerun" candidates than either Marshall (called him a "maybe a three-bagger") or Turgeon - a "solid double" and (no joke) said that he was "the safest coach - the Jerry Green - of that list".

Take it all as you will.

1. Are there legit candidates that aren't being heavily mentioned (i.e. other than Grant, Stevens, Frank, Brown, Wright, Turgeon, Marshall, Smart, Williams, et al) but who might surprise us to know have expressed interest in the job?

2. Say you were betting a bottle of scotch: Who do you think is standing at the podium in 10-14 days, wearing an orange tie, when its all said and done?
1. Not really. Everyone who will be a factor has been mentioned in one place or another.

2. If I were wagering, I'd go with Marshall. That's because I don't think Turgeon will take the job.

Anyone who thinks the coaching acumen of Mark Turgeon and Jerry Green are comparable needs to simply refrain from commenting on college basketball.

It would be kind of funny and sad if we got a bigger name head coach for the men's basketball program....when we couldn't for the football team.

To those salivating over Lawrence Frank simply because he was an NBA coach, let me offer these small tibdbits:

1. The last coach who was a pro coach but never a college head coach had issues at TN.
2. Frank had a LOSING record with the Nets (225-241). He failed to have a winning record in each of his last four seasons.
3. The Vols have to hire someone who will run the program to the letter of the NCAA. Not sure Frank fits that bill.
4. Culture and fit still matter. Again, think LK.

UT could do a lot worse than Frank, but I think it could do better as well. There are many proven college coaches out there.

1. He also didn't have backing by the AD or administration.
2. Who was the last coach of the Nets to have a winning record?
3. He was a college coach before, here actually.
4. Kiffin wouldn't fit in anywhere but the left coast. Most people can adjust to their surroundings.

For full disclosure I am not for or against Frank being the coach. Your view was one sided, however.

Couple of things.

- Did you see the Nets roster the last season or two of Frank's tenure? Not exactly a great team there.
- The culture thing shouldn't matter. He's an NBA guy, so he's used to moving around. He went from an assistant on the Vancouver Grizzlies, to a head coach with the Nets, and signed an extension there. Plus, the guy has coached at UT before, so he's familiar with the area.

a friend just sent me a text saying that it has been reported that Frank has been offered according to some Boston source.

I frankly don't believe it.

Celtics won't stand in way of Frank exploring Tennessee job - and Doc Rivers offers encouragement to do so.

From article:
“That won’t happen,” Rivers said when asked about preventing Frank from interviewing. “It’s just like Thibs last year. We allowed him to do his job with us, which he did and he was phenomenal at it, and he still did some interviews, which is great. I am a big believer in that, I don’t think you should stand in the way of anyone that’s going to be able to better themselves. You just don’t do that. I know it’s done around the league, because, somehow you can’t do your regular job. I don’t believe that. I think that you can do an interview and still do your job. So if it came to that, that would be great for him.”

And Rivers said that, though the more-reserved Frank might have his hands full with recruiting (not to mention wearing one of Pearl’s signature orange blazers), he thinks Frank might do well at a place like Tennessee—though Frank reportedly has only been contacted by the school for input on filling the job, not as a candidate, and Frank would prefer to remain in the NBA.

“I think Lawrence is a great coach and I think he would be terrific in a college atmosphere,” Rivers said. “I told Lawrence I thought he would struggle in the living rooms with moms, but other than that, he’d be pretty good. I want all my assistants to get jobs, so that would be good.”
