Lawrence Frank - Boston Celtics Assistant

Perhaps Rivers was just making the general statement that he wouldn't stop any of his assistants from interviewing for other positions and nothing more.

I want to believe.

No. This story doesn't mean that Frank is going to be hired; however it is significant in my opinion.

After reading it, it leaves you with the impression that Doc Rivers and LF have discussed the potential move:

"I told Lawrence that he would struggle in the living room with moms [during recruiting pitches], but other than that, I think he'd be pretty good. No, I want all my assistants to get jobs, that would be terrific."

This doesn't mean that Doc and LF were discussing Tennessee....but I would say there is a decent chance they were.

That means CLF is talking about the UT job with him, in some capacity.

True.

My point was just that the quote suggests that CLF and Doc were discussing a potential transition to college in general (leaving room that there could be another suitor). That's why I said it doesn't guarantee that they have discussed Tennessee, but the fact that the only program I have heard CLF brought up for is Tennessee would suggest they were talking about UT.

I'll throw out the worst-case scenario with Frank, just so we're not blindsided. He takes the job. Then, Rivers steps down. Then, the Celtics still come for Frank even after he left before their season was over.

After the last couple of years as a Vol fan, I've learned to be aware of the worst, just in case.

do you think Tom Thibodeau would be the Celtics first choice to replace Doc?

Worst case scenario Tom Thibodeau turn a them down.
Hope Bulls don't make finals.

Just a question but why does lawrence frank seem attractive to many of you? Does he have any college coaching experience other than being an assistant under O'neill. Is it because he's in the nba we think he will do good here? just wondering

According to an ESPN Rumors article, the Vols are "leaning on Frank as a consultant" for the coaching search and says that he is a long shot to get the job because of this. Also, it has a quote from Danny Ainge shooting down the possibility of Frank leaving Boston. But, does anyone know anything about Frank being used as a consultant? That part confused me.

Brandon Wharton is a friend of mine from high school. He played under O'Neill and Frank for a couple of years. I will try to contact him and see what he thinks of him

I'll take a shot.

Recruitment: He has instant credibility with HS players looking for connections to the NBA. Assuming that he runs a style that is based on pro-style offensive/defensive sets, playing for Coach Frank might be seen as a good way to get a headstart on one's pro career. Thus, he may have a recruiting advantage over most of the other coaches in the SEC (Calipari and maybe Donovan excluded).

Player Development: His experience ought to be good for keeping players focused on what would make them better. If CLF says that you need to work on a midrange jumper or learn to play the 3 if you want to make it at the next level, you just might believe it.

In game coaching: One can assume that he has the ability to coach x's and o's in the heat of the game based on 5 yrs as HC of the Nets and this year as the right-hand man for the Celtics. Frankly, this is where I though CBP was the weakest. Great pre-game strategy and scouting, mediocre (but not terrible) game tactics.

Did I miss anything else?

Still, I'll believe it when I see the press conference.

"The Celtics have not been approached by Tennessee about conversations with Frank, a former Tennessee assistant who has never run a program on the collegiate level.
“All I know is that Lawrence is under contract with us for the rest of the season,” Danny Ainge said this morning. “Right now he’s committed to helping us win our next NBA title this year.”

There are very few things that Ive called in my life, but this is one.

Would be the best hire we could make in this current position and the administration knows it.

How much would it hurt him as a hire (as far as recruiting goes) if he DID stay with the Celts thru the playoffs?

as long as we knew he was the coach, i doubt it'd make much of an impact. it would keep both our incoming guys and probably tobias and possibly scotty on the team.
