Legitimate Rape?

Arguing, commotion, big hullabaloo... whatever. You get what I'm saying. The point is that abortions sparked by rapes are rare. No need for the media or the POTUS or anyone else to be making a big deal about legalizing abortions for rapes when well over 90% of them are abortions from two willing sex partners.

No. That is certainly not the point.

The point is the dude said something REALLY stupid about the abilities of the human reproductive system.

When somebody makes such a stupid statement people are gonna notice. If that somebody is running for US Senate, people are gonna call the dude's intellectual abilities into question. Why wouldn't they?

Proportionally, if you counted the number of smokers that are cancer patients and compared it to the number smokers that are recreational, it would be on par with the number of women that had an abortion due to rape vs women who had one just as a lazy form of birth control.

Are you against abortion/morning after pill/etc being used as birth control?

And he implied that much of the "rape" that occurs is not really rape.

I've heard that claim before, though. I can believe that some female has reported that she was raped when that wasn't true. This only requires that someone be willing to lie. It was, however, stupid for the dude to imply what he did in the midst of a senatorial campaign.

I've never heard, and I don't know anyone else that has heard, that the female reproductive system has the ability to determine when sperm is rape sperm vs when its consensual sperm and act accordingly. It was very stupid for the dude to put forth such a bizarre claim, whether in a political race or not.

On the first part I'm quite sure there are some cases where rape didn't occur - the way he said it though suggested a view of women that I think really calls into question his suitability for office. It's the part that bothers me more rather than have the science part wrong.

That and that, when it really is rape, the woman can just close her eyes, focus really hard, and tell her body not to become pregnant and it will work.

So he basically simultaneously insulted all women and demonstrated that he is a complete frickin moron.

Ras, the biggest issue is that he seems to be incredibly out of touch with reality. This guy, and others like him no matter what their political affiliation, should not be in a position of power. The fact that he's on the science subcommittee and made these remarks is highly laughable.

Completely agree with the bolded part.

I don't think he just got the science part wrong, as if there were some pre-existing controversy about these magical reproductive abilities. His apparent ability to rebuke science and/or just make crap up in favor of his personal views is very disturbing to me.

I can't make any sense of the "anatomical anti-fertilization rape response" or whatever you'd call it he seems to be describing.

I can (playing Devil's Advocate) actually make some wiggle room in the "legitimate" rape thing though if I am getting his context right. Statutory rape can involve consenting parties so, even though it would qualify as a "rape" legally speaking the consensual part would negate whatever pregnancy rejection voodoo he's trying to express. This would also include anyone who got pregnant from consensual sex but had to cover it up (UPS guy's kid, etc) and went with rape. If by "legitimate" he meant "expressly against the female's will" as opposed to examples like I cited above that makes more sense.

Still a bewildering thing to claim.

I believe you have the legit rape issue correct, however, the rest of his suppositions and freaking stupid. Politicians should NEVER talk science. They step on their collective penises whenever they do.

Pa. Senate candidate compares abortion decisions - Businessweek

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — The Republican candidate for Senate in Pennsylvania on Monday compared the decision to abort an unwanted pregnancy resulting from premarital sex to one conceived through rape as he defended his opposition to abortion in all cases.

Tom Smith, who is challenging Democratic Sen. Bob Casey, made the remark after being asked how he would argue to keep the baby if a daughter or granddaughter were to become pregnant as a result of rape. Smith said that his daughter went through "something similar" to rape: "Having a baby out of wedlock."

We have a vice president who is a former senator and every time he opens his mouth he says something stupid.

Who notices?

Barack Obama voted three times as an Illinois state senator to prevent any medical treatment being given to babies that survive abortion attempts.

That's pretty brutal imo.

I'm sure there is absolutely no context being left out of this post.
