Let’s talk about Will Brooks

Always amazed at how many people need to have an opinion before the fact.

None of us know how good Brooks will be this year. We will get a chance to see. Then we can form an informed opinion.
Ah yes the ever so weary STAR wars. My HOPE as a vol fan is as he completes his college career he is one of the low star guys that passed the MAJORITY of the 4 star guys in his class and gets dollars instead. It happens a lot.

ON3 data for ease…… 24 draft

5 star 14 at 43.8%
4 star 81 at 22%
3 star 131 at 6.5%
2star 31 at 4%

More exceptions than the rule. Playing a guy after several years of growth, training table, weight room, and on field experience is not the same as taking a shot at the end of HS career, maybe before first shave.

Of course the data is skewed some by the fact each year the no brainers from the JR class get drafted, and some 5th year guys too. But that rolls forward year to year.

Bottom line, I hope THIS PLAYER is one of the draft worthy lower star guys. That should make him NOT a liability. TBD of course.

If we're starting a walkon in the defensive backfield then it's either a failure at recruiting/evaluation, failure of development, or some boneheaded determination to stick with seniority over talent. Either way it is a failure
100% with you Godfatha on DB's. Brooks "can't play dead in a western" if he ends up starting and sees significant minutes as the season progresses, it is an indictment against Martinez and Banks. Apparently Brooks got toasted several times in the most recent scrimmage by Merc.

Why do people believe this?

CFB is littered with great walk-on stories every year about a guy who defied the odds and became a star at his position. We've had those type of players before as well(Jumper/Reveiz). Why can't Brooks be another one?

The evaluation of guys with more stars is irrelevant if Brooks is a legitimately good player.
Because supposedly we have been led to believe that we have upgraded in the secondary with much more talented players. Haven’t we all been thinking that? Oh the secondary is so bad because it lacks SEC speed and physicality blah, blah, blah. But a walk on suddenly has better speed and physicality than some higher ranked guys that had legit offers from big time schools? Come on.

But yet it’s looking like, at least right now, that a walk-on will be starting at safety? That should tell you that guys are either not being developed or the talent evaluation missed severely. Oh I get it, the coaches are infallible right?

I like both starting CBs a lot. I like Turrentine at one Safety. If the other Safety spot can be resolved and Boo can be what we think he can be at Star, we'll have a good starting 5.
I don’t know why this made me think of what my old dead Daddy used to say about “if’s”…
”Boy, if you’re Aunt Gladys had a pecker, she’d be your Uncle Ralph”. 🤪

You haven't watched him play a down yet. It's entirely possible that he is simply a good football player, regardless of scholarship status.

Believe it or not, sometimes players get overlooked in the recruiting process, yet turn into very good players at the college level. UGA just won 2 Nattys with a walk-on at QB. Baker Mayfield won a Heisman and was the No.1 pick in the draft as as a former walk-on. JJ Watt is one of the top 5 best DEs in the history of the NFL and was a former walk-on at WI. The list goes on an on.

Brooks could be a bad starting S and we did indeed whiff on evaluation/development of the other players. Or he could be a great story of a kid that defied the odds and turned into a high quality starter. The point is, until we see him play we can't make that assessment. So automatically assuming we missed evaluations or can't develop is a dumb take.

Martinez has made it clear that he prefers to start upper classmen over talent. There haven't been any reports of Brooks balling out in practice...in fact, I read some commentary that he really struggled in the 2nd scrimmage. I just hope we don't lose Boo to the transfer portal because of Martinez's stubborness. I know he is playing star, but he very well could be playing safety.

🤨🙄🤔😒🧐🥱🤡

Even if Brooks turns out to be a step slow or a tad small, I hope the fans will embrace him and the the effort he shows. All of these guys put forth more effort than 99% of the posters and rather than be abusive as many were towards Colton Jumper, we all should knowledge their effort and appreciate it. They are doing the best they can. Obviously, if the coaches had better alternatives, they would start them.

IMO Brooks will be the starter because he is the one guy that can call out the needed adjustments for the defensive backs. It is a major requirement to have someone who understands everything needed back there and I can make the proper calls. Even if giving up some athleticism and talent. With 5 new guys on the back end a necessary move.
Well that’s just great.

not that I'm aware of..

Sup Larry. Now that we have 105 scholarships instead of 85, Bishop should definitely be on scholarship soon if he isn't already. I think he is part of our 3 back rotation this season after he passes Seldon on the depth chart. We have plenty of talent at RB now IMO. Did you know that UT runningbacks had zero fumbles last season? I think Bishop pulls away this season with his blocking, ball security, and tough yards after contact. He is a well rounded back who has played a LOT of football in his career. He reminds me of J.Kelly.

Hey man,

good hearing from you.

the 105 doesn't begin this year and they are still dealing with the reductions. He could be on scholarship just haven't seen any hints of it. I will do some checking.

…And for the 105 to kick in next year, the federal judge must approve the settlement agreement, which hadn’t happened yet. It’s expected to, but nothing is certain.
