All that is fine until you consider he has played for BCS NCs, has played in 7 BCS bowls, and compare all that to the other options.
Against who, exactly? The Big Ten has been pathetic for most of the last 12 years, and no one has actually been even a conference contender year-in-and-year-out (let alone a national contender).

Michigan - 79-46 (2-6 in bowl games)
Michigan State - 66-58 (1-5 in bowl games)
Minnesota - 59-65 (3-4 in bowl games)
Northwestern - 60-63 (0-5 in bowl games)
Ohio State - 106-22 (6-4 in bowl games)
Penn State - 79-45 (4-3 in bowl games)

Ohio State has been in the Big 10 exactly what Oklahoma has been in the Big 12 during the same time period. A major perennial contender declined (Nebraska in the Big 12, Michigan in the Big 10), a couple of different schools rose up randomly for a year or two (Illinois and Iowa in the Big Ten, Missouri and Texas Tech in the Big 12), and there's another school that usually hangs around toward the upper echelon with a couple of years being able to contend nationally (Wisconsin in the Big 10, Texas in the Big 12).
The difference is that the Big 12 has seen a bit of a resurgence in recent years, while the Big 10 continues to plummet. Oklahoma is able to continue to hold their own against an increasingly-difficult conference, while Tressel's Ohio State teams did exactly what John Cooper's teams did...they'll roll through the conference, but have at least one absolutely baffling loss every single year. In Cooper's case, it was always against a team from Michigan. In Tressel's case, it was against everyone else, and only a couple of them were against a team that was remotely comparable to OSU.
The Big 10, as a whole, usually had Ohio State at the top, then a couple of teams in the 8-4 or 9-3 range, then a couple at 6-6 and 7-5. Everyone else was usually between 3-9 and 5-7. Every single year.
