Lil Wayne in Critical Condition

Achy Breaky Heart went platinum (triple platinum actually) so what's your point?

I know little to nothing about LW so I can't speak as to weather his music is any good (my guess is that it isn't) but I know how many records one sells is irrelevant in determining that.

Everything up to and including the Carter IV was "Good" in the since it wasn't as terrible as his stuff is now. The Carter IV was his magnum Opus by far, and I'd give it maybe a 7.5 out of 10 at best. The best way to describe Wayne is like how you would describe a Rookie version of Lebron James. It was back before he was good enough to really take over games single handedly on a consistent basis, but even on his worst nights he would do one thing a game that made you go "Holy ****... did he just do that?"

Wayne will have one, maybe two lines a song that will make you re wind and go "Damn, that was really clever." and then the rest of it is forgettable.

The difference in him and rookie lebron though, is that lebron got better. Wayne has regressed. Though I strongly recommend anyone who hasn't heard it to hear Me and My Drink, if only for Short Dog at the end.

and its at this point I realize I know way more about rap and hip hop than any white southern male should know probably...

I agree with this man here. I consider myself fairly well versed in the rap and hip hop industry (punnerific) and Wayne may not be one of the best writers/lyricists, however he does do something very not standard among most artists. He doesn't write his lyrics down. Hasn't for years. Now, you may not think thats impressive, but on average these guys produce probably 30-50 songs a year, some like kanye or others do more than that, and the majority of them don't get produced on cd's, but lots of them get done live or released as EPs or singles.

Now, think about this. The average rap song has 3 verses, a hook, possibly a refrain or some other extra section. But let's just go for the verses. I would wager 80% of songs anymore are 16 bars per verse. Thats 48 lines per song, on average roughly. For historical example, a sonnet has 14 lines. Shakespeare published 154 sonnets in his day that we know of. 154 * 14 is 2156 lines, so roughly 2150 lines, again in a rhyming pattern not unlike modern rap.

Wayne has records of 942 songs that he wrote on his own. That's not counting compilations where he did a guest verse (so no Down, no Travis barker, no Forever, no Swagger like us, etc). Now, 942 * 16 = 15,072

So, in his career, just on verses alone, just on solo work alone, no hooks (which he wrote many because he thinks he can sing), wayne has published more lines (which are on average LONGER also than a sonnet) than shakespeare on a scale of 6.9 to 1.

And I would wager he has 90% or more memorized or could have them in passable form within a few minutes each live. I may be wrong, but I never heard any stories of shakespeare reciting all 154 sonnets from memory, but I have seen wayne do 20 songs live from 4 or 5 different albums.

I'm not saying he isn't an idiot in terms of life, because he is. But to call the man ignorant is a far cry. I would go as far as to call him a savant in this regard for memory. Which most people do not tie with ignorance, but intelligence. And considering his life from birth, its a wonder he can even speak to begin with.

and now I'm gonna go drink heavily because I just wrote a short essay comparing one of the worst rappers I know to one of the greatest playwrights of all time in a favorable fashion.
So you're telling me that rap actually has written music involved in it? :eek:lol:And comparing Shakespeare to Lil Wayne? :disappointed:

Honestly, I have a hard time with the term "talented rapper".

You can hold that opinion, but if one looks hard enough there are tons of individuals I would consider poets. They just express their poetry over production.

I guess you just have to have a semblance of interest in the genre.

I don't want to turn this into another video fest like the rap thread, but this is an example of lyrical prowess that can be found in dozens of relatively well-known artists.

Which part is too hard for you? The part where without google you probably couldn't name two modern day poets from the past twenty years without looking it up (as most people couldn't anymore?) Or the part where I compared two people who use sex references in their work? In fact, Shakespeare's work with sexual terms and puns makes most rappers look like preachers, and that's before mentioning that he was a thief for his most famous work (Hi hamlet) and had to invent words because he couldn't even describe things properly on his own. Even rappers aren't so arrogant that they invent words on a consistent basis.

But the real point is, if you don't like rap or hip hop, stay the hell away from threads like this. I wasn't comparing the two in skill, I was comparing them in terms of writing and memory, which as I showed, Shakespeare doesn't come close to for even an average rapper like wayne.

But I'll tell you this, in twenty or thirty years, the average person won't remember our current modern day poets, but they will tell you who tupac, nas, eminem, aesop rock, talib kweli, and several other rappers were, because they are our modern day poets.

If you don't believe me, something similar has already happened before in the late 1800's and early 1900's, the business men of Rockefeller, Carnegie, Vanderbilt, etc. are more recognizable today than the presidents of the time to most average people.

Mos Def
Slug
Joey Bada$$
Danny Brown
Del
Talib Kweli
Jay-Z
Aesop Rock
Lyrics Born
El-P
Murs
Kendrick Lamar
Tame One
Nas
Scarub
The Grouch
Big Boi
Busta
Dose One
Fatlip

And those are just rappers who are still alive, B.

That's an embarrassingly bad list. Where's Weird Al Yankovic, he belongs in that group if we're talking about rap

Typical rap follower response, don't click on our drivel filled bs if you don't like rap. Now you're comparing rappers to industrialist icons. :eek:lol:

Interesting how it changes every time you click on it Einstein

Someone hasn't used YouTube for very long. Surely, "suggested videos" wouldn't relate to your viewing history. I'm here to talk rap, not school you on the basics of the internet. I'm sure everyone sees the same ads on Facebook, too. Those advertising web designers don't have a damned thing figured out.

Dude, don't be a dick.

And this is a typical response from someone who clearly knows jack squat about hip hop.

I know it's obnoxious and abrasive, sorta like you two rap experts.

Actually, I was pretty lenient with the first dumb thing you said. Then you started lumping people into a group because they know more about a genre of music than you.

Why even post in here? You're just making an ass of yourself.

Because he's got a valid opinion, Coolio.
