list of GOP cuts.

What school is receiving federal funding for the football team?

How many Div-I football schools aren't receiving federal aid? Taxpayer money?

How many football schools were instituted with public money?

I don't have the answer, although I'm willing to bet it is somewhere around "the vast majority."

I certainly don't mind. I approve heartily. These are often the fruits of convivial public institutions.

In fact, how many athletic programs in college are profitable now? And none of Hambone's City Boy accounting!

So if a school receives funding from a source, all potential activities of said school are thus counted as funded by that source?

I should expand my resume.

If the school didn't receive said funds, would the other activities be there??????

I think I've seen mentioned on here many times most AD are not profitable. They must be subsidized, therefore, by the school, no?

It might have private characteristics now (but so does the Post Office), but at its heart, college football is a public institution.

and you call yourself a football fan?

I said I approve whole heartedly! I'm not bothered in the least. It's fantastic what democratic government can do!

The real question is how do you call yourself a college football fan?

meaning that you don't really care if wealth redistribution is used to fund college football?

what are you, the Knute Rockne of socialism?

That's what is happening right?

I totally forgot about posting the REAL wealth redistribution post!

no, a college football program like UT's is supported almost entirely off of ticket sales, merchandise sales, private donations, advertising, TV contracts. With the exception of the facility itself, I don't think UT football uses a dime of taxpayer money. In fact, the football program is such a cash cow that, because of Title 9, it's used as a funding mechanism for pretty much the rest of the athletics department, minus men's and women's basketball.

That's not the case at most other schools, though. I think that may be the point that gibbs was trying to make.

no, gibbs was trying to make the case for college football being a socialist program. He's failed miserably in that regard.

Very, very modest. 50% is actually getting into some real politics and real priorities and real decisions. Not the current Welfare Dad scheme which is the "Defense" budget.

I suppose it is aptly named, since it doesn't factor in WAR spending.

School bands are the bomb. I am for a completely overhaul of education, but school bands actually provide a lifetime of rewards for kids. One of the best programs in our current school system. Gives them an actual / life-affirming skill in the real world unlike the standardized testing regime.

Who needs that. Its been suggested that in the future you will be able to leave your job and and focus on the arts.

government healthcare, two years of unemployment checks, can't get kicked out of your home, why not explore expressionism through matchsticks and crayons?

Military spending should be on the table, according to Tea Party:

The Associated Press: Tea partiers say defense in mix for budget cuts

Of course, that means the Marine Corps Band (The President's Own) might lose some trumpet players too. It's all a conspiracy to shut down the band! Oh noes.

Que LG / UTGibbs starting a thread, loosely based on the premise that the Tea Party didn't target military spending until after DADT was repealed.

Or, that more blacks enlisted this month, than last.

Title is kinda odd, considering Defense wasn't brought up until the last paragraph, and after entitlements, SS, medicare, and medicaid were mentioned.

They shouldn't look at one thing, or even five things considering the hole.

Its gonna come back to politics. What you can cut that doesn't put you in danger of being voted out. Which leads to political manipulation and not really fixing problems.

Agreed. Simply just passing along the link.

Oh, I know.

Just thought it was funny that they titled it what they did. Didn't seem like the emphasis of the story was on Defense spending.
