Goestenkors' experience at Texas also proves that bringing in an experienced HOF coach ("winningest coach never to win a championship") who got top recruits is no guarantee of return to greatness. That said, she has the chops if she has the desire to take on a makeover project.
I agree that Nikki should have stayed at UCLA a bit longer to keep building that program. Her LSU tenure hasn't added to her resume, but she would be welcomed with open arms by the LV faithful.
I still have a soft spot for Kellie Jolly-Harper, but she has to reproduce her success with a smaller program as she did at Western before getting another shot at the majors. Would still be a vast improvement over the current situation, IMO.
As for Becky Hammon...my original candidate...does she have a legitimate shot at a head coaching job in the NBA anytime soon? And would it be for a cellar-dweller in which the odds of failure were high? In other words, how important is it for her to hang around hoping to make history compared to taking over a major college program? She's said that her future is open re: coaching opportunities. Even if she were willing & the pay amenable, would she be the right hire given the uncertainty with the current players, possible transfers, lack of incoming talent, etc.?
I think most would want someone who has run a successful college program that has shown growth under her/his tenure and has an established track record, although making a big PR splash with Hammon would be rolling the dice (high risk vs. high reward). The question is whether to go with someone like GG who is currently available, go after someone ready to move up (Adams, if vetting clears her program), or a young up-and-comer who is a cinch to take the next step.
The $ Hart would spend would eliminate part of the candidates off the bat. Alumni will support spending over a cool million for Shoop, but unlikely that there will be any sort of call for raising the stakes to bring in someone making more than Warlick given that Auburn's coach already makes more than her anyway.
