Look, we just beat the #1 team in the country......

Not really sure why we are arguing over what is bigger. Can't we just enjoy knocking off the #1 and undefeated team in the nation for a few days. We did it with the help of 3 walk ons....and we are still arguing. Don't know about you but I am one proud Vol today!

I'm really shocked to read that anyone would actually think ANY regular season win means more than reaching the Elite 8 for the FIRST TIME IN SCHOOL HISTORY.

Sorry but the Pearl haters needed to be called out. Support your team, coaches and players.

This sounds like the Pearl haters can dish it but they can't take it. They jumped all over the people who supported him. I think it's more childish than anything to insult your own coach. The people who were doing so probably haven't coached any sport of any kind. Not like they could do a better job although you wouldn't know otherwise. Hat probably offed himself.

Are you talking about Steven or Bruce?

If you read my posts, I'm not a big Pearl fan. That's not the issue here. We all need to stop acting like children...from both sides. Let's just celebrate this win. Yes, we can still argue about UT basketball. What the future holds is still up for debate. We can argue Pearl's strengths and his weeknesses. But just a little bit, let's stop calling people out in threads (on both sides), and enjoy the win.

GO VOLS!!!!!!

:hi:

Not being a smart alec, but if you do not like coach Pearl, I have came to the conclusion that you have not been around the UT program that long. If you have seen and been through the coaches we have had in the past you would realize what we have in Pearl. When we finally make the elite eight, you might then start to come to reality.

i can understand that an elite 8 appearance is a bigger accomplishment for our program than beating a #1 opponent, but this victory garnered more media attention for the program than an elite 8. ESPN would not be making a big deal about UT making it to the round of 8, but beating Kansas with a depleted roster is one of the top stories.

as far as recruiting and national perception goes, i think this victory does more than an elite 8.

that said...as a fan i would rather lose to kansas and get past the sweet 16 than beat them and come up short in the post season.

Decent play in one 24-hour news cycle is worth more than the biggest accomplishment in the history of the program?

Regular season wins don't mean anything, ultimately. Just about everybody outside TN will write this game off as a fluke and then forget about it. Playing in the Elite Eight is real credibility.

but wouldn't everyone outside of TN forget about an elite 8 as well? the elite 8 has been built up on this board and amongst our fans simply because we have not gotten there. the final 4 is the true promised land for college basketball.

the third weekend of the tourney is when the nation gets to see the cream of the crop.

Regional final is a big deal and, interestingly enough, the only route to a regional title.

Everybody in the country watches those regional finals. When you get there, people realize it. And nobody writes it off as a fluke.

Meanwhile our Kansas game was up against a shootout NFL playoff game, so nobody saw it. I've got half a dozen friends in Atlanta who are big college basketball fans, and none of them saw our game because they were all watching football. "Hey, I heard you guys managed to beat Kansas somehow. What the hell happened to them?" Kinda sucks.

And maybe it's just that I care more about a tangible accomplishment like going deep in the tournament than I do how long they talk about it on PTI. Airtime on ESPN is a means, not an end.

i agree that the impact was tainted by the NFL playoff weekend, but college bball fans are aware. i was at the kansas game so i suppose i am biased. once the titans were out i lost interest in the playoffs

College basketball fans all know we won, but since so few of them probably watched the game (note: I have no idea what actual TV ratings were), then all it is to them is something interesting running across the crawl at the bottom of the screen. Ordinarily you'd expect college BB fans to at least catch the last 10 min once the upset was brewing, but with the NFL playoffs I doubt that even happened. I watched the game in a bar and I was literally the only person looking at the TV with our game. Every other screen in the bar was on the NFL game.

Which means that everybody will write it off as a fluke unless we make a serious run through the SEC schedule. If we start dropping conference games left and right, then by mid-February it'll be like yesterday didn't even happen. Which blows.

Newsflash: One Elite Eight appearance is not that big of a deal. No one talks about how many Elite Eight appearances a team has, but rather how many times they've made the Final Four or won the tournament. Honestly, it's embarrassing to act as if getting to the Elite Eight is somehow a huge deal if there's no success afterwards; any sensible Tennessee fan should recognize that an incredibly shorthanded and uncertain Volunteer squad pulling together to upset the #1 team is leaps and bounds more meaningful than an empty appearance in the Elite Eight.

#1 this time of year is subjective. There is nothing subjective about the Elite 8.

Newsflash: One Elite Eight appearance is not that big of a deal. ......

The UT men's basketball team has beaten a #1 in the regular season multiple times yet has never had an Elite 8 appearance. If it is not a big deal then why haven't we done it?

There is nothing subjective about the Elite 8.

Says George Mason.

Pearl haters acknowledge the fact that Tennessee has never been to an E8 but expect him to go in 4 years? What should happen? Think UT is going to get a better coach? Who? It sucks to see that Bruce has made the expectations so high for some of you that you seriously cant appreciate what he has done for this basketball program. Give him a few more years guys, geez.

1) What do you define as a Pearl hater?

2) How many years should it take?

3) Names have been bantered about ad nauseam. Do a little reading.

I dont know. You seriously thought 4 years ago that a coach should come in and turn Tennessee in to a top 8 program nationally within 4 years? haha

This is amusing. Some people are never satisfied.
