Looking back, should not have fired Phil

Holy cow. If you aren't a troll... you are completely out of your mind!!! Sanders was HORRIBLE. Fulmer's inability to lay personal loyalty to Sanders aside in favor of the program more than any other thing cost Fulmer his job. Fulmer could have still been coach AND have never experienced those down years if he had seen what was obvious by about 2002 and cut Sanders loose.

Since leaving UT... where has Sanders had success as an OC? He can't even get a job as an OC anymore.

And Cut? He seems to be doing fine having turned Duke into a credible offensive football team... and mentoring Roper into a job with UF.

Ainge's struggles are DIRECTLY related to Sanders' incompetence.

You are also one of the biggest excuse makers I think I have ever seen. Teams with new QB's don't always or perhaps even usually struggle. Auburn had a new QB this past year. FSU had a new QB as well... BOTH BCS CG contenders. And Winston won the Heisman!

Looks like a lot of teams in the sec are predicted to struggle because of losing their qb. As for sanders, he's good enough to work for jimbo fisher and coach a heisman winner.

He may be a good qb coach. My post referred to him as a not very productive off coord. Sal Sunseri is apparently also a good position coach. Orgeron was a failure as a head coach, but a good position coach. We are talking about 2 different things.

He probably wouldn't for three simple and plain reasons. He never really learned how to choose and manage a staff. Personal loyalties always got in the way of getting rid of guys who weren't getting it done like Sanders and Slade. Second, he flat refused to change as the game changed. Lastly, he for whatever reason completely lost control of team discipline both on and off the field.

This became apparent to me in I think 2003.

no, they rollercoastered. Still, sans the two 5 win seasons (one of which was a lame duck fired mid season) the worst was 8 wins something we havent sniffed since his escort to the door. Then throw in some double digit wins and it beats the s*** out of the cess pool Hamilton created. I'd take that whole rack of records, including the sub .500 years, over what we've had to endure in the past 4.

Regarding the title of this thread, I had little doubt that it was time for Phil to go. I was greatly appreciative of what he had done for UT football and the University and admired him for his commitment to the program.... but it was time. What I disagreed with was how it was done. Hamilton was a prick.
 
Should've been gone in 2005. The reason you don't see extended fall off in Auburn or Bama is that they have loyalty to the program and not the coach. If Saban has 2 5 win seasons in 4 years, he'll be gone too. Auburn fired a coach a year removed from the NC and fired Tubby 2 years removed from 13-0. We hung onto the anchor until we were in so deep it was going to take a while to swim back to the top, hiring another anchor in Dooley certainly didn't aid the cause.

Auburn was a unique situation when they fired chizik and replaced him with malzahn. That was akin to Tennessee firing majors and replacing him with Fulmer. Both men had been offensive coordinators and had a number of supporters.
Auburn made the right decision, but our sorry record reflects that we did not. There is no such thing as a trend when it comes to coaching careers. I prefer to look at peaks and valleys. Look at bear Bryant and joepa for examples. Coach Fulmer would have gotten us back to atlanta at least once if not twice. He would have fixed it.

I agree with this post. Auburn's had plenty of peaks and valleys over the years. Not sure I'd want to emulate that program as the standard. It's a crap shoot sometimes. Bama missed out on Rich Rod when they got Saban didn't they?

I always thought the bird in the hand was better than the bird in the bush as far as Fulmer was concerned, but when the dog and pony show started by canning the O.C. and installing an entirely new offense and then giving it one year to produce before firing the H.C., the wheels had come off from an administration and leadership standpoint at the top. That's the first thing that has to be fixed.

There was NOTHING... Absolutely NOTHING... when Fulmer was finally pushed out that suggested things were turning around, that he understood how to turn it around, or that he even fully accepted that anything had to be turned around. He was full well committed to driving UT even further in the hole.

What has been seen since is typical. Not fun. But typical.

UT will struggle until they find the right coach. It will be an ELITE, not "good", HC that can recruit, discipline the program, develop talent, and get it done on gameday. That may be Jones or it may take another change. The one thing UT cannot do is the very thing you advocate... tolerate low or ambiguous standards for its HC and program.

You don't by chance work for the federal gov't do you? That's about the only place someone can "succeed" while embracing mediocrity.
