Looking back, should not have fired Phil

Fulmer was great in the 90s when the rest of the SEC coaching talent was atrocious outside of Spurrier. When the Sabans And Rchts started showing up, Fulmer was exposed as a very good recruiter who just couldn't coach really well.

It starts before the firing of CPF. Looking back, Mike Hamilton should never been promoted to AD. That was the actual precipice.

Hamilton is the real culprit here. Of course DD was going to accept the job, same with Lane. UT was an upgrade to both of them. IIRC, Lane was out of a job and Dooley was at La Tech. So we can't fault them for accepting. The whole hiring process was flawed.

And finding his replacement has been easy.

Oh wait...

His replacements have absolutely zero to do with his ability to coach in the SEC. Just because we botched the following hires does not mean we should have kept him. It just means we should've got the hires right.

One year removed from Atlanta. Should have tried harder to get Cutcliffe instead of Fooley. Phil was hamstrung in who he could hire by Hamilton. We have made enough blunders to last a lifetime.:hi:

Duh!!!!!!

I realize that Phil had gotten complacent. However; had he hired the right offensive co ordinator, then we would have had a respectable season in 2008. Maybe an 8 or 9 win season. We finished with 5 wins. With the proper hire at Offensive Co ordinator, we beat UCLA, Auburn & Wyoming to give us 8 wins and a bowl game. With a bowl win, we get 9 wins for the season.

Then he had some recruits coming in from that recruiting cycle. Of course, we never know if those new recruits would translate to performance on the field.

For instance, Daniel Brooks & Donald were all highly recruited and they didn't meet expectations.

I think that if he had hired the right offensive co ordinator, then he could have had about 3 more seasons in him.

This thread feels like Groundhog Day with Bill Murray. We seriously gotta move on and quit wallowing over what could've and/or should've happened.

While generally, I agree. It's also important to understand your mistakes and learn from them. As a fan base, we need to learn our lessons.

Looking back is a bummer... but the OP is right. As frustrated as we (as fans) were during CPF final season, Hamilton should have just ridden it out.

Yes, when Coach Cut left, the void was huge and CPF made a mistake in trying to convert to a very different offensive philosophy. However, CPF was definitely a guy who knew how to win... and win championships, not just "compete."

He had earned the right to either re-educate Clawson, or bring in a new OC, and get the offense back to playing Tennessee football.

Absolute truth here.

Take a look at Tennessee's newer academic admission standards that were put into place about 3 years before Fulmer was let go. He could not recruit the same players he could have 4 years earlier.. Also Kurt Roper was a complete disaster as recruiting coordinator and throw in the NCAA giving Phil up, ( NEVER DONE BEFORE OR AFTER) in his reporting the violations at Alabama, which, agree or not, was used to hurt his street cred among certain social groups. It was kind of a perfect storm... Hamilton did as told by Cheek, and Hamilton went for some sort of wild swing for a head coach rather than a good solid coach, because he did not have the" list" in his drawer as I think Hamilton was too busy working on things away from his job.ie, church, missions, orphans, etc...

I think we all love Coach Fulmer and appreciate what he has meant to our program and all of the success we had while he was here.

Having said that, what's done is done. You're not ever going to get where you want to go if you keep turning back.

We fired the man that could not coach all he did was give TENNESSEE the best 15 year run in the last 60 years and a NC other than that he did nothing for us, we should have gave him 1 more year and then let Phil walk on his terms if we had another bad season the year we fired him he had a top 10 recruiting class going and by the way he is in the HALL OF FAME that's pretty good for a man that could not coach 9 wins was a bad year when he was here, now look at us just wishing for 6 wins and a small bowl, but coach Jones will get us back if we give him time we are still 2 years from even thinking about 9 wins.
