Lou Holtz on the OT and fumble

players only started holding the ball like that near the goal line the last few years-why is this?

Was hoping Lou quit after showing his ass a few weeks ago.
Don't know how he and May have lasted so long.

"Now I hope that what happened to TenneTHee on that touchback is a leTHon for every player in the entire country..."

You forgot to add the spit flying and denture sticking sounds when quoting

This. To me, there is a difference between the ball going out on the side versus the end.

The above sentence and the below sentence don't belong together.

I've watched a lot of football and I don't think I've seen this before.

You obviously haven't or you would have seen this several times. It happens a lot more than you think. I see it at least once or twice a season. In fact, I think there have already been two this year in the NFL. Player thinks he has the TD and drops the ball running in on the 1/2 yard line and the ball rolls into the endzone and out of bounds or is covered by the opposing team. Touchback, always has been. I think it is a good rule. I think Pig busted his ass for the Vols yesterday and just got a tough break at the end. He will learn a valuable lesson from yesterday. All our guys played lights out yesterday...Corey Vereen played well but possibly cost us more than Pig did. Had Corey not lost his head, we might not even have been in OT.

Its considered a touch back. Just like a punt or kick off that goes through the end zone. Had it not been OT it would have been GA ball at the TN 20. Been the rule forever and don't see it changing.

I find it funny that we have so many "dedicated expert fans" that claim to have never seen it happen.

Its the change in calling a TD where the ball only has to touch the line to be a TD. Years ago it wasn't this way.

Ball carrier's FIRST job is to hold onto the ball.

This is an easy statement to make when you are in the stands and not trying to win the biggest game you have ever played to date. I agree with you technically, but in reality in the given situation, I can see what he did.

For the past three years we haven't seen a player sacrifice themselves and dive for the pylon like that. I'll never fault a young man for giving it all for the score. Unfortunately, things don't always go your way. Keep your head up Pig!

True, but it was a huge moment. He tried too hard because he wanted the win. I don't fault him for trying to win the game. Next time, he will keep the ball in tight. But then, you will prolly fault him for not stretching out for the td.

Teams that are fundamentally sound with the basics tend to win more often; football teams that commit minimal false start penalties, no stupid roughing the QB penalties, don't retaliate to personal fouls, and HOLD ONTO THE BALL, baseball teams that can turn a double play and outfielders that hit the cut off man, basketball teams that get offensive rebounds and make free throws in the final 2 minutes.

UT was so desperate to win, the ballcarrier ignored that he has been told to hold onto the ball by every coach since he was probably 6 years old- it cost us the game and a huge morale boosting victory. Instead, some are now embracing a "moral victory". The team played a better game and looked like a team that knows how to win for most of the second half.

Progress, but we are not "back" and have a long, hard road back to relevancy in the SEC and national scene.

For the first time in years I saw an energy from players, coaches, and fans. It reminded me of Bruce Pearl's first year here. A lot of our fans are too young to remember that neyland was a place nobody wanted to come to. It didn't matter how talented the opponent was, they were nervous.

Georgia players even said they had a hard time communicating throughout the game.

Pig had a hell of a game and will be a ball player. North is starting to come around, what time to get your first career TD. Cam Sutton has earned a lot of respect from teams cause UGA didn't throw much his way and when they did it was hitting the grass. Jalen Reeves-Mabin will be a star. Corey Vareen not only has an amazing first step but the kid seems to have moves and technique of a junior. And Swafford is ball magnet.

I know it's hard now but this team has a bright future due to those young men.

I'm proud of this team and fans. And I'm proud to say that I'm a VFL. Stay positive volnation.

i support Pig, he was trying to make a play. Proud of the young man for giving his ALL for Tennessee. If anybody faults him then they are not a VFL, not a true Vol. You Play to WIN the game, especially against a #6 ranked team at home. NICE PLAY PIG. That's the breaks kid. It's ok -- We'll get USC in 2 weeks.

Lou Holtz is right. don't try that reaching out with one hand shiet at the endzone, it's too risky. especially in OT. I'd rather take the ball at 1 yard line thank you.

Lou Holtz is an example for the whole country not to stand too close to people who spray spittle.

It should be encouraged not discouraged. And no, I've never seen a player extend for the pylon and lose it resulting in a touchback. Sorry.
