That's a great message...."Don't extend the ball toward the pylon, because you stand a good chance of getting bit by this dumba$$ rule.""Now I hope that what happened to Tennessee on that touchback is a lesson for every player in the entire country..."
Posting what he said; not expressing it as being right or using it for some sort of point about what happened nor saying I agree or disagree with it
(another anchor later said "the lesson you were talking about is for ball carriers to hold onto the ball firmly.")
Agreed. They should change the rule to have the ball placed at the 2 yard line or the point at which it was fumbled if it goes into the endzone and then out of bounds.Me either, guy was giving his all to try and win. My problem is with the stupid rule that gives the other team the ball off a fumble they didn't even recover. Pig got hosed.
what was the rule before that?
It should be encouraged not discouraged. And no, I've never seen a player extend for the pylon and lose it resulting in a touchback. Sorry.
The lesson should be for the ncaa to change this dumbass rule. I could see if he tried to throw it across from 4 yards out but it was an unintentional fumble and a rule that cost us this one not the effort by Pig. Hell every player in America would do the exact same thing in an OT situation.
All fumbles are unintentional. Howard tried to make a big play and fumbled. The refs made the right call. The Vols came up short and being butt hurt doesn't change anything. Be happy with their best game since 07!
It might not change but it's a total garbage rule. Anywhere else on the field and the team retains possession where the runner lost control. It's not like a punt or kickoff in that it isn't and shouldn't be a change of possession if the ball is not recovered by the defense. The rule makes zero sense. Honestly I would say this if that call had went against Georgia. You punish players for trying to score. Terrible rule.

If that had been South Carolina or Notre Dame losing the ball going over the goal line, Holtz would have praised their effort. Don't recall lisping Lou ever saying anything positive about the Vols. One of the most biased sports commentators ever.
