Lou Holtz on the OT and fumble

"Now I hope that what happened to Tennessee on that touchback is a lesson for every player in the entire country..."

Posting what he said; not expressing it as being right or using it for some sort of point about what happened nor saying I agree or disagree with it

(another anchor later said "the lesson you were talking about is for ball carriers to hold onto the ball firmly.")
That's a great message...."Don't extend the ball toward the pylon, because you stand a good chance of getting bit by this dumba$$ rule."

Such a powerful message I'm getting all choked up just thinking about it. :ermm:

Me either, guy was giving his all to try and win. My problem is with the stupid rule that gives the other team the ball off a fumble they didn't even recover. Pig got hosed.
Agreed. They should change the rule to have the ball placed at the 2 yard line or the point at which it was fumbled if it goes into the endzone and then out of bounds.

what was the rule before that?

Not sure, but seems like the rules haven't necessarily changed but the interpretation has. The original rules came from Rugby so the ball had to be considered "dead" in the endzone. They were later changed to be "dead" on or above the goal line. Seems like the "interpretation" has changed/been clarified in the last 10 - 20 years. When did we start hearing "break the plane" in football?

It should be encouraged not discouraged. And no, I've never seen a player extend for the pylon and lose it resulting in a touchback. Sorry.

I have, several times. You have also seen clips of guys dropping the ball on the half yard line in an early celebration, you just may not remember it. Same rule.

My problem is not with the touch back rule. My problem with the whole play is, there is no way they had enough conclusive evidence on the replay to show that the ball was coming out before it broke the plane of the goal line. He was reaching for the goal line with the ball in one hand. It looked to me like he dropped the ball after it was across the goal line.

Anyone who blames Pig for that play is just ridiculous...The kid was laying it all out on the line to beat a top 10 team, 99 out of 100 times he scores.

The lesson should be for the ncaa to change this dumbass rule. I could see if he tried to throw it across from 4 yards out but it was an unintentional fumble and a rule that cost us this one not the effort by Pig. Hell every player in America would do the exact same thing in an OT situation.

All fumbles are unintentional. Howard tried to make a big play and fumbled. The refs made the right call. The Vols came up short and being butt hurt doesn't change anything. Be happy with their best game since 07!

It might not change but it's a total garbage rule. Anywhere else on the field and the team retains possession where the runner lost control. It's not like a punt or kickoff in that it isn't and shouldn't be a change of possession if the ball is not recovered by the defense. The rule makes zero sense. Honestly I would say this if that call had went against Georgia. You punish players for trying to score. Terrible rule.

Couldn't have said it better myself. :good!::good!:

All fumbles are unintentional. H!

not really--you can intentionally fumble the ball forward when stopped on fourth down into the endzone or past the first down line and have a teammate pick up the fumble.

Sorry man.....unintentional fumble...............fumbles should rarely be intentional it has been a fumble for decades if you lose control of the ball

hate it but it is a fumble

ball out of hand before you cross the goal line is a fumble and always has been

goes out of end zone it is a touch back

goes out before end zone it is whoever had the ball last

If that had been South Carolina or Notre Dame losing the ball going over the goal line, Holtz would have praised their effort. Don't recall lisping Lou ever saying anything positive about the Vols. One of the most biased sports commentators ever.

He beat TN in 1990 while at Notre Dame.

(Edit: They also didn't play while he was coaching Arkansas.)
