Love this Dooley quote

It would have destroyed 2 recruiting classes and I'll remind you that the two QBs that we have on roster that are worth a damn both were mid-term guys that may have decided to go elsewhere. Then we're left with a Senior QB and NO ONE else.

It could have been disastrous and given the situation did not make any sense to do.
But if we make a really good hire, which I consider a really good possibility, we would be far better off for the future. The next year or two would be atrocious, I don't disagree, but the future would be far better, in my opinion.

Who would have been available that wasn't available then? And how attractive a situation is that for a coach when you have a seriously depleted roster, the last two recruiting classes did not help and you are likely coming into a situation where you had a losing season?

What big name coaches do you think would jump at the opportunity to take over that team and lead them against talent the likes of Florida and Alabama?

It simply isn't realistic.

We'll find out, but I don't think we could afford to lose any classes to interim limbo. More ifs in those assumptions than the much maligned record of DD.

What talent will you attract in that situation?

It simply isn't realistic. You're talking about setting the program back 5 years bare-minimum.

Agreed and while DD may raise questions and or concerns for some I can't agree that the around the corner argument brings less concerns or questions.

Pearl's done better than I expected, but I said on this board when he was hired that he would do alright here. Dooley, on the other hand, was a miserable hire who will fail on a scale not seen at UT since the pre Doug Dickey '60s.

I hope you're wrong. We were also promised hover boards and jetpacks....so people can be wrong.

If, with almost a full year to explore candidates, Tennessee couldn't have hired someone with a resume that annihilates Dooley's it is time to drop down to the FCS level.

Hat's post is more or less my answer to your question, Sab.

I think spending a lot could result in a really good hire. There's no way the search would have been as atrocious as it just was. There's no way it's a 5 year job. A really good coach can get his recruiting classes in and be very competitive in 3-4 years.

The issue isn't whether we could hire someone better than Dooley. The issue is how far it would have set the program back.

You also give Dooley's resume far too little credit.

It addresses none of my concerns. And you're wrong about how far it would have set the program back. You aren't attracting a name guy to that team who is going to attract recruits. It aint happening.

I still haven't heard one name of a guy that would "annihilate" Dooley's resume like is being claimed.

Yeah, because the list of under .500 coaches in garbage conferences who have jumped to BCS leagues and thrived is huge. Also, how much has Saban fallen off without Dooley around? Doesn't appear from the results in Tuscaloosa he was that damn valuable. Saban is somehow surviving without him.

No he's not. You may have heard some things you like about him, but he hasn't even had success at the lowest level of D-1 football. Could he eventually? Probably, but it's ridiculous to promote someone from such a low level without any significant accomplishments. There have been many coaches with much better mid major resumes than Dooley that have been horrific hires.

Why would a guy like Saban who makes excellent hires fall off because a coach decided to write his own story? Ridiculous reasoning.

For enough money, I don't see why not. If this hire is as disastrous as it seems like it could be, UT won't be competitive for at least 6-7 years, and that's assuming we don't screw up the next hire as well.

Why would a guy you act as if deserves a shot at being the head coach at Tennessee be so easily replaced?

To me, there's certain things you need to look for in hiring a mid major. Meyer's term at Utah was a success that was simply unimaginable at the mid major level. There's also guys like Gary Patterson whose been so consistent so long that I'd be excited about him. However, I'm not sure how you hire someone who has literally no real head coaching accomplishment in an atrocious conference. I wouldn't have been excited about Chris Petersen, and he's on top of the conference. Going for the guy closer to the bottom is simply baffling.

I have posted in many different places on many different topics... running across thousands of posters from all walks of life. These debates were usually more personal, serious, and/or impassioned than UT football.

I can honestly say that I have never run across anyone who expressed more bitterness, bigotry, cynicism, and discontent than hatvol... and yet he is so blind as to think the problems are with everyone else.

Of course it must be our imaginations working over time since hatvol said that he wasn't discussing football anymore.

The talent is here. The depth is not at key positions. But I can see where people are being optimistic about Dooley and the upcoming season. Anyone know what's special about Saban? The guy just knows how to get a guy to play with a purpose. He is great at getting a team together and maintaining the esprit de corps, the cadre mentality necessary to bring good talented players together to perform at the highest level and make a great team. If Dooley (which he has actually mentioned several times) learned any part of that from Saban, and he recruits some good talent then we should fine.

It's Saban's motto in which I hope Dooley follows. 'Recruit talent that plays with purpose'. That was the difference between Bryce Brown and Trent Richardson. How many times did you hear Saban on the radio bragging about snagging Richardson and Julio on signing day? Carroll won big at USC recruiting the top talent every year. Meyer's done it.Kiffin may win big at USC. But that's not the only way to win.

I'm surprised you took time away from your "Team Building Exercises" to opine.

All the differences expressed here can really be reduced to neurological dispositions in the the three major operative cognitive systems: human, mammalian and reptilian.

SEC football is tribal, totemic and tactical. I follow it because its been a constant point of engagement and learning since I went to the UCLA game in Memphis in 1965. I was also at the Memphis game in 1988 that the Vols won after starting 0-6. The Vols won out in '88 after the Memphis game. They went on to an 11-1 season in 1989 winning the Cotton Bowl. So we know there can be ups and downs in Tennessee Football. I will confess that I have had to learn to temper my emotional expectations over the year as I have found it possible to be consumed to my detriment in the twists and turns of the game. Last year I was thrilled at Hardesty's break out and disappointed that Berry did not get the interception return record.

I look forward to more excitement, understanding and emotional engagement and wish the Vols and Derek Dooley well. Could be speculative but I predict continued ups and downs.
