Kansas is not an elite team this year. They may end up being top 10 heading into the NCAA tournament but I also won't be surprised if they are closer to 20th and don't win their conference.

They are small in the front court, don't rebound or rim protect well and only have a couple of legit offensive threats from what I have seen. I don't see them making a deep NCAAT run unless Dick explodes in March. Maybe the Vols are just a bad matchup for them and made them look worse than they are. Anybody else feel like this Kansas team is weaker than usual?

Sounds like you're judging them off one loss that we handed them, which seems silly.

They should have lost to Wisconsin, too. Wisconsin is no slouch but typical Kansas teams should handle them. I'm not saying they are not a good team....just not a typically elite KU team. It is early in the season but I'm not seeing them as a potential championship team at all.

They beat Duke, so....

Fair point but I also think Duke is down a bit this year. It's early but I don't necessarily see any teams that are going to separate themselves as favorites to win it all. Seems like there will be a cluster of teams near the top....I just am not incredibly impressed with KU. Maybe they settle in during conference play.

Kansas lost to Dayton exactly a year ago, then won the title.

Seems like Kansas rarely gets to conference without a loss or two. Their previous final 4 appearance was preceded by 2 preseason losses, one to an unranked Washington.

I agree with what you’re saying as far as how they’ve looked so far. The three games they played prior to us were less than impressive, and that’s why I felt like we had a good shot to win. I definitely don’t see them being as good as last year, but that could be skewed by how well we defended last night. Maybe the best defense I’ve seen in a single game in a long time. Lots of time left to evolve for both teams, but yes, I’m thinking this Kansas team won’t be great.

Fair point. They do have a tendency to gel more as the season progresses(like most teams). I am speaking strictly on talent. I see a very good PG in Harris who was in foul trouble against us, a solid backup PG in Pettiford who got injured against us, Dick who can shoot but can't play defense and Williams who can be a stud unless he goes up against a big, athletic team like UT. Yesufu also seems solid as a combo guard who can play the point.

They have some other pieces with size that can defend on the perimeter and down low and get put-backs but their overall roster does not seem as strong as usual. Maybe they would have looked different if Harris played more. JMO that they don't strike me as a championship contender this year.

Loved the “loved the win” part but the rest of your post sucked.
How does a fan base manage to complain about holding the previous national champion to 50 points and beating them by 14?
I don’t give a crap if they are good or bad, it’s Kansas

Lol not even surprised by these threads anymore. That was a huge marquee win for our program. Don’t diminish it

It absolutely was huge. Top 5 win against a blueblood. Not a knock on UT. I think we have our most well-rounded team in years and have a lot of room to improve which is scary for other programs. We can make a lot of noise this year but I do think we need another PG to step up in order to reach our full potential.

Just stating that I am not particularly impressed by KU's roster this year. Would you trade our roster for their's?

Where did I complain at all? Love every minute of that game except the turnovers. I am very encouraged that we handled a top 5 team fairly easily wire to wire even with all the turnovers and missing JJJ. This is my opinion on how good KU is/will end up....no shade at all on UT. We handled our business, played lock down defense, shot the 3 better and more selectively and (probably most impressive) absolutely killed them on the boards. Very good win and a confidence builder.

Edit: not to mention a great win for our resume come March.

Vols have beat them 2 years in a row now. Also the Vols have won 5 consecutive games against top 10 opponents. Maybe the Vols are just good.

I definitely agree with this. Vols are very good and are a perennial top 10-20 team under Barnes with periods of being top 5. I think this year is our best chance at a deep NCAAT run.

I’m mixed on this. KenPom has Kansas at 20th right now. So, I think you could be right on them being a top 25 team, but not elite, of course they could improve more as the season goes on. However, we have also been a team whose struggling to find their identity on offense. Played an entire tournament without arguably our best, or at least most well rounded player and won. It’s an impressive win on a neutral court in the third straight day of playing. A very impressive win, even if Kansas isn’t top 5 this year.

I think the biggest part of this is that there doesn't seem to any elite teams, this year. It isn't just Kansas. And frankly, there seems to be an inordinate amount of parity, this year. So many teams with otherwise odd losses, Tennessee included. It really makes the Colorado loss feel even more fluky. No team seems immune from those, this year.

I’ve heard March is the number one month for vasectomies, so that whole explosion thing may have legs…

So we lose to Colorado and the team sucks (and yes it was a bad performance and I'm talking to myself here) but then we run the table in the B4A and beat a team that is the defending NC and had won 17 in a row and now we're trying to downplay the win; a win that if most here are honest didn't see coming.

Also, you want to look around maybe? Right now pretty much nobody looks that dominant. Almost every top team has either already dropped one or had a game they could have lost.

I mean did you have 2 threads ready to go? One if we lost about how Barnes can't beat elite teams, can't win big games, we're not that good, blah blah blah, and then this one to downplay a win?

Seriously man, don't act obtuse here. Everyone knows exactly what a "I like....but..." sentence is doing.

Totally agreed. I am very happy with our performance and it was an impressive tournament. Just because I don't feel like KU is AS elite as usual does not mean that I'm not thrilled with the victory, especially considering that we were missing JJJ.

If JJJ comes back healthy and Phillips continues to progress then this could be the best season we have ever had. I don't see many games where Santi, Key, JJJ and ZZ are all off from 3. We have two 7ft rim protectors/rebounders at the 5, ORN is very athletic, a good rebounder and a good shooter at the 4 or 5. We have 3 guys in JJJ, Mashack and Phillips who are in the 6'6 - 6'8 range, can defend and have a good mix of shooting and slashing ability.

Our defense, rebounding and shot blocking are elite. 3pt shooting is good and can be elite some nights. Mid range game can be very good and we have 3-4 guys that can penetrate and get a shot or dish to an open man. If we can develop a backup PG in case ZZ gets hurt or has foul trouble and can get some reliable scoring down low from our bigs then we are a complete team and will be able to win in multiple ways.
