‘23 LSU transfer OT Zalance Heard (Tennessee)

I heard AP say some are speculating that it may have been a done deal to Ole Miss before he even entered the portal. If so, sounds a lot like tampering.

Its technically not tampering if the OM NIL collective reached out to him. Collectives can have as much contact with any player/recruit that they want to.

I guess I don’t understand the new format.

Why would Ole Miss get in over Bama, who they lost to and finished undefeated in conference play?
Top 12 get in and I was thinking that OM was ranked 11th. Bama would have been in and so would GA and Missouri.

Actually that isn’t correct. The NCAA rule says players may not have any contact with a school directly or indirectly through others until the paperwork goes through and they are officially in the portal.

Just like Ole Miss has done this year!

Exactly. They have been accused of breaking the rules multiple times but enforcement is virtually nonexistent.
Exactly. Why let the rules get in the way.
Harbaugh was suspended for half the season for multiple infractions and they are playing in the championship game.

Kiffen hasn’t even been suspended once.

Since ADs and collectives are supposed to operate as separate entities, it creates loopholes.

The school doesn’t contact the player. A representative of the collective (a business separate from the university) reaches out to someone close to the player (but not the player directly) like a HS coach or family member and they use that party as a proxy to gauge interest and financials.

It’s convoluted enough to skirt the rules now, but it definitely needs to be addressed because it’s a blatant loophole that’s undermining what the transfer portals actual purpose was.

Then Spyre needs to get to work!

I'm sure they have at times for major needs. I think it was reported that we were of the many teams that were reaching out to Jordan Addison in 2021 before he was officially in the portal.

But it's a tricky road to travel. If you're paying big money for a lot of portal guys and not paying the guys currently on your squad, you'll likely to create some tension in your household. I get why OM is "going all-in" on 2024. But they are probably pissing off of a lot of their current players that aren't getting paid, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of them hit the portal. And with guys like Nolen, Juice, and Baron likely being 1 year guys, they are gonna be in a world of pain come 2025. Of course, Lane seems likely to move on to greener pastures in that scenario, so he probably doesn't care.

An NIL collective is not the school nor do they represent the school. They do not offer scholarships or playing time at Ole Miss. All they have to do is convey that the collective is looking for clients and ask what that player might be looking for in an NIL deal. They could even exchange financials. All of this can be done without a single mention of transferring to Ole Miss because it's understood without saying anything that the NIL deal in contingent on transferring to OM.

No rules have been broken because NIL collectives are completely separate entities from the school.
