‘23 LSU transfer OT Zalance Heard (Tennessee)

LA has mentioned multiple times that UT just doesn’t get involved in these.

-We don’t chase high profile bidding wars.
-We don’t upset current guys to pay big to new guys.

This guy sounds like the kind of portal add that ends up elsewhere.

I don't know what context this was said in, but obviously we know that isn't completely true. We reportedly offered Nico 8 million as a HS recruit. We chased Seaton with reportedly the largest NIL deal by a good margin, before Colorado came in. We're quite clearly willing to pay top dollar for the talent that we really want.

Now, if the context of that conversation is that we don't engage in counter offers after our initial offer, then I could see some truth to that.

Umarov is an OT. He was a true freshman this year, so it would be ridiculous to expect him to start in the SEC, especially at a position he doesn’t practice. He played a decent amount in the bowl game and looked pretty good. He was at LT and and extra Tackle/TE on short yardage. If UT lands one of these portal OTs, I’d expect him to be the first OT off the bench in 2024.

Reddick is a Guard. He’ll be a RSSo. in 2024 and needs to make a jump this year into the 2-deep. If he doesn’t, I’d expect to see him in the portal before 2025.

Johnson is an OT. He looks slow. He got beat easily on an inside move to allow the hit that took Moore’s QB off on the final drive. Fortunately, he was bailed out by that being a penalty. He just doesn’t look to have the feet to me,

Yep. Honestly, I know we complain about Martinez, but I have serious concerns about Ellarbee and his ability to evaluate prospects. I assume he has final say over the recruits at his position. So far I'm not seeing the results. It's by far the most troubling position on the team right now....at least for me. I know it's said that if you hit on 50% of your recruits, you're doing well, but it sure seems like we've missed on more than we've hit on.

Yeah you're definitely wrong.

Just because a redshirt freshman and a true freshman TACKLE wouldn't beat 6th, 5th and 4th year grown man scholarship GUARDS and the underclassmen GUARDS on the roster....doesn't mean they have a "long way to go"

O-line is largely a developmental position...there are next to zero Trey Smiths that walk this earth. Trey Smith is a generational talent at GUARD.

Let's also not act like Ollie Lane was the worst offensive linemen we've ever had. He wasn't out there screwing up all the time. He wasn't THAT bad.

ollie? he really was that bad and was def out there screwing up all the time. Its the truth.

OL recruiting has been down right bad so far. Literally nothing to show for the high school classes they’ve brought in. I’ll give a “good” to everything else, with QB obviously being elite.
I get it man. but what can we do?

im sure the coaches see the deficiencies.

gotta land zalance.

You’re just looking for a debate, apparently. Umarov can develop into an NFL talent, and probably will, but I’m not going to argue with someone who thinks Umarov or Reddick or Larry Johnson III is going to go from being outside of our two-deep (despite injuries) to being our starting RT in 9 months time during the portal era. I’m not going to change my mind about us being desperately thin at OT, but feel free to waste your virtual breath 🙂
Vol fan 28 was obviously a fan before Vol fan 39.

LA VOL knows what he’s talking about. I’ll leave it at that.

Only been 2 real recruiting classes so far. And we’ve had vets starting.

Haven’t seen any young TEs or DBs in that time, why no concern there?

Only seen Squirrel as a young guy who came in and has earned substantial snaps in WR room.

RB room has been the same dudes until the bowl game.

Since LT & RT has been a topic in here. Looks like Top LT make ~15% more on average than Top RT.

What I see there is that only 3 LTs in the entire League make more than the top 2 RTs. And by the time you drop to 5th on the pay scale, the RT is making more than the LT. Idk what the rest of the list looks like.

Portal. That was in the context of the Portal. Though I’m sure there are common philosophies across all of NIL - be it HS, Current guys, or Portal adds.

Both Nico & Seaton were HS recruits.

So, in other words…… the top LTs make more than the top RTs

And analytics suggests both to be equally important, unlike the traditional view that your blindside tackle is of greater value
Sure. Equally important.

Depends on how you define “valuable”. Based on salary, the top LTs are.

I’ve always subscribed to the theory that a LT is more important than a RT. That of course has to do with the blind side protection. But one thing that works against that theory…teams usually put their top edge rusher at LEO, or at LE. That puts them across from the other team’s RT. Notice that’s usually where James Pearce is lined up, except in Rabbit packages.

Regardless, we need stud Tackles on both sides. Darnell Wright was proof of the importance of a quality RT.

Without portal help, Davis and Campbell will be the tackles
