‘23 LSU transfer OT Zalance Heard (Tennessee)

The length of Heard’s visit isn’t a negative. He was just trying to squeeze in two visits in a short window. I know AP said he’ll take multiple visits, but the coaches read this as OU vs us. I don’t think there was a knife fight over LT vs RT guarantees. He does have “people” helping him beyond his parents, and that is never good. I don’t get the feeling that it stopped progress, but handlers always want something. Beyond that, he had a good visit and I really think he’ll just be making a choice driven by a number. We were very competitive there. I’ve heard that they want two OL and one or DB’s. All four is two over current limits (not my math). Mincey leaving created a hole that they have to fill. That isn’t a mystery to them. At the least, they have to sign one tackle who will get reps. We’ve talked to Lewis and Leonard and I know one is visiting. Can’t remember which.

So the sky…..isn’t falling?

Given how the pool is looking, one would think they'd have to over spend to secure his services? Still how does the staff handle the position demand? Isn't Crawford the defacto starter there? You bring Heard on and he takes the LT spot, wouldn't Crawford be a post spring portal risk? Back to square one but with a guy starting at LT who might not be as comfortable in the system as Crawford?
Crawford doesn’t have any eligibility left I thought?

Crawford will probably be working at Best Buy next year. He just finished 3 to play 3 after junior college. Separately, the staff has a weekly room meeting. They discuss portal needs and potential visits with players. We may or may not handle the portal the way our fans want, but our current players are not surprised by developments in the roster. They get a view of the landscape pretty regularly.

I like the way they do it but also you can prob be more aggressive when you get a possibly generational QB on campus. The fans concerns are fair. Both can be true.
You’re like Charlie Brown on Adderall. Words like “aggressive” are just nonsense terms. We talk to players immediately upon them being available. We interview their HS and current coaches within a day of portal entry. We pay competitively and have a very high hit rate on portal players. What sort of extra “aggression” would you like? We also have an OL coach who has done more with less. Judge the completed OL when we have one. We don’t yet.

Welp, my hole on this board is already pretty deep, but I guess I could actually stop digging for a bit.

That was my point...the hits from the Iowa game...are not acceptable. I don't know how many were attributed to Davis but I assure you CJH will remedy that.
I mean some of it was Nico holding the ball, some was the line, some was Sampson not doing an adequate job in pass protection. Whatever the reasons though Nico won’t survive a season taking that kind of punishment in the conference. We have to protect better, WRs have to separate and catch better, Nico has to get the ball out of his hands faster.

A planned, strategic, disciplined approach.

How about that.

Chloroform and zip ties maybe?

My old dumb butt got confused...it's Campbell not Crawford...but I was close. Got the first letter right. If they grab Heard, who takes the LT spot?

I would think Campbell has that locked down barring injury. Heard would have RT this year then could slide to LT the next year if he’s sticking around two years.

Based on how we do things, rest assured Campbell is included in the dialogue. I think the RT/LT debate is a bit overstated. I don’t know what they’re telling Campbell or what they told Heard. I just believe they told them the same thing, which is rare right now.

I'm wrong...a lot, but I seem to recall...again, a risky proposition with me...that Heard was dead set on LT? If the staff gets Heard to accept your scenario, I don't think anyone could doubt their "ability to close" as that would be one helluva great sales job.

Appreciate that. Here's hoping honesty still carries weight with some players.

Heupel being honest and forthcoming probably will help him in the long run. Right now the used car salesmen of the world seem to be doing well.
