Mac McClung

I'd rather have him RS this year and be available for the next 2 seasons if he were to come to UT. We lose Bailey after 2 years, almost certainly JS after 1 or 2 and highly probably JJJ and KJ after one or two years. The perimeter could get real thin in 2 years if TN doesn't reload. Vescovi, McClung, and Ticket would be a dang good backcourt in 2022-23.

This is exactly my thinking as well. If you could convince him to sit this year and learn PG from Barnes and Co. it would be a win for both parties. He may simply just not be willing to do it.

The numbers aren't always a snap shot. I don't know the entire story about Georgetown last year, but if McClung became the primary scorer from the perimeter, then teams probably focused on him. If he plays on a team with other pieces, then his numbers could very well be better.

All that said, I just don't see it, especially if he is really trying for a waiver. We have two 5 star guards that need to play, and SV and JJJ will be better.

That's a real good point about his numbers possibly being off due to being the focus of opposing defenses instead of having adequate help around him.

He averaged just shy of 16 ppg, 3 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.5 steals in around 27 mpg. Yes, his fg% (40%) and 3p% (32%) isn't going to win him awards, however that is far from sucking.

What is sucking if well-below average shooting efficiency isn't? On average, every time he shoots he puts his team at a disadvantage. Think about it.

In Huff's mind the guy who averages 8 pts but shoots high percentages is better than the 16 point guy who shoots a low percentage due to being the focal point of the defense.

If you look back at the averages of our guards on what I would consider the most successful team in the last decade (18-19 season). Schofield 47%, Bone 46%, Turner 42%, and Bowden 45%. I don't consider 40% a far cry from the numbers from our guards that played the most minutes that season. You're right.....he sucks because he shot 40%.

I like this kid and any other year, I would be all in for MM to transfer here. But, the timing's not good, for MM and UT. MM would be better off going somewhere he can be the main man at PG and hopefully play his way into being drafted. That's not going to happen here, especially if he is eligible, this year. If he has to sit a year, it might work out well for UT, but it still wouldn't be the best thing for MM, imo.

I’d much prefer Pons return or we fill that spot with another highly touted big man. But if McClung can get his waiver then I guess we can just play mostly small ball next year. Still, I’m not crazy high on McClung. I live in Georgetown and go to many of their games. I think he is a fine player but he isn’t any better than the guards we’ll have on the team next year outside of Gaines as I said earlier.
He was the star of your team before the injuries and you will not have any guards on athe roster next year even close to Mac.

Yeah I figured he’d have to sit so it might make sense for ‘21-22. Not for this year though. Still seems like if this is based on Pons leaving that we’d have a more urgent need to bolster our front court

He almost sounds like Marshall Henderson minus the character flaws and off court nonsense.

I think that MM doesn't complement the 2020-21 roster all that well. But he probably does complement JJJ, Vescovi, and Ticket very well in a couple of years. I don't think that MM needs to take minutes or shot attempts away from Keon or Jaden and possibly Bailey.

FG% doesn't really tell the story because scoring efficiency depends on how many 3's and FT's you make. But if we're going to use FG%, some of those are a big discrepancies. The difference between the best team (52.5%) and the 150th place team (44.2%) is 8.3%.

McClung doesn't shoot 40%, he shoots 39%, and Schofield shooting 8% better is a world of difference.

Turner and Bone were not great scorers, but at least they could run the offense and set up other guys. Bowden was more efficient as a scorer, had better size, and he could do a little bit of everything. McClung is a tiny black hole who doesn't do much other than put up shots. Again, if all you can do is score, at least do it well.

I watched a lot of GT games on Fox Sports 1 the last 2 years. After Ajino left in early season and 2 other defections MM became opposition #1 target double teamed off the dribble most the time . If he can get set like SV he is money on 3’s. Thing was he was hounded by big east teams and missed some games and played thru injuries this year. His numbers would be different on a deep team % wise. His scoring probably go down with an occasional big game.

Yurtseven scored 0.2 ppg fewer than McClung on 1.3 fewer FGA's and 1.2 fewer FTA's. Moseley didn't miss from 3p, and Allen didn't either. If it's true that he was getting doubled then his assist numbers should be way higher, and it's very troubling that they are not. They had 3 guys that played big minutes and shot 38% from 3.

He’s also way more athletic than Marshall Henderson.

A better distributor as well

I would love to have Mac but not more than I’d love one more year of Yves and I’m not a fan of running anybody off, nor a believer that a player would ever just willingly give up his scholarship to walk on

So, if McClung signs on does this put an end to the recruitment of Kennedy Chandler who is a true 5 star point guard? You really would have to question whether his interest would be there if this occurs.

I don't think the culture at Georgetown last year was all that swell. There is a way to build a good case.
They seem like a hot mess given all their transfers. Didn’t know that was a legitimate reason for getting a waiver
