MACGRUDER's Jon Gruden theory (with help from others) Warning: Long

exactly! i like you.

Thanks man. Plus....I don't need to make another account to give credibility to what I say.

I get credibility because I write logical posts.

I may be wrong, like I've said a bazillion times.

But I just don't think everything is adding up. I wrote my thread, and then Macgruder wrote his, and just furthered my thinking.

these are the same thoughts ive been telling ppl. im with yall on this. its smells of huge coverup til the time is appropriate for all parties involved. only time will tell.

Just ask yourself, for those who took the ridiculously long time to read what I posted:

What makes more sense, seriously? Distance yourself from the situation temporarily and listen to what we've been fed from "local" media.

1.) Gruden was never a possibilty
2.) Maybe he was, but it was a slim chance, and other candidates are out there, wanting this job.
3.) No, Dave Hart, Jon Gruden, and the Haslams don't have to shoot this notion down, because we're telling you it won't happen, even though our track record is terrible.
4.) Ok, maybe some talks have happened. He was a target, but he's no longer in play. Too much turmoil, all things considered. We tried. It didn't happen. Let's get excited about the new guy
5.) Gruden was never, nor will he ever be a factor. His agent confirmed it. Have you read it? It's bulletproof. Stop talking about Gruden. Let's focus on B-caliber coaches and not entertain any real talk about the Gruden possibility even though large sums of cash have been moved towards our coaching search and Mr. Haslam went on record of stating that Gruden would be a great fit here (not that that would incite a massive fan reaction or anything).
6.) You guys still talking about Gruden? STFU! Seriously, how many things have to come out to make you shut up about that and make you look stupid for even mentioning it. Leave it alone. Focus on Jimbo Fisher or Bobby Petrin..(oh wait, he's dirty???!?!!!?)...erm, Jimbo Fisher, or Charlie Strong! Those guys will be our next head coach, and just don't pay any mind to the reports that they haven't interviewed with us. THAT is the smokescreen, because they totally have, and we're so about to offer them this UT Job. Wait, why did this take 2 weeks to come about? Er.....um....because this is a serious coaching search....yeah, and uh......you have to wait for the games to be played and uh....(Why did other teams in the SEC clearly interview/hire other coaches while we did nothing)....ALL part of the process, obviously. We put feelers out, and responded to whoeve....(are they buying this?)....anyone who thought UT would be the right career move for them (Has Gruden signed the dotted line yet....??? When's the last football game? ....oh, really? ****, we gotta kill this for a bit)

WE HAVENT EVEN TALKED TO GRUDEN!!!!!!! (Haha, that'll slow them down)(.....but sir, many folks know we have talked to Gruden and he's really close to signing)

Er....*Calls up LaMonte* HELP PLZ!!!!!!! AND THX!!! *kisses*

(LaMonte): Er...um...no, random Knoxville press release that no one takes seriously....we haven't been in contact with UT. Them folks is CRAZY. Btw, I'm gonna disappear after this for like a full day. Don't call, THX.

(Everyone): Hmmm....this seems fishy. Not sure if I buy it.

(Fickle Everyone) Ding dong! Ding dong! Gruden's dead, Gruden's dead! Ding Dong! Ding Dong. Let's go hire...Charlie Strong!

(Me)...Wait guys, I think I have an idea of what's going on here....

I would come if I was him were probably willing to pay him 8 million a year and give him a seven year guaranteed contract. He can then go 5 and 7 and we still have to pay him. Were willing to put up 56 million dollars to a guy who has won a Super Bowl with a team of talent as good as any ever assembled on an NFL team. He did in the next few years totally decimated that talent and finished 5 and 11 and got fired. He has never recruited in his life or won even one college game. If I were him I would definitely take the 56 million because he could possibly get paid for doing nothing for four years if things work out like they did at Tampa Bay.

Not to Champion Gruden since it appears Fisher is our guy, but...

QB's: Brad and Rob Johnson and Shaun King
RB's: Michael Pittman and Alstott
WR's: Keyshawn, Keenan McCardell and Jurivicius
TE's: Dilger and Rickey Dudley

Standouts on D were:

Derrick Brooks, Ronde Barber, Simeon Rice, and Sapp.

Not exactly as talent laden as any team ever assembled...

First off, I think it's ridiculous that people find a need to comment on a post (a quite insightful one at that) that it was too long and they didn't read it. That's just post padding and it's stupid. In actuality, the post isn't that long. I'm at work and it took me less than 20 minutes to read it, and I'm glad I did, because OP brings up some very valid points.

I'm not saying I believe or disbelieve anything he has said, but I know I want it to be true.

As for right now, here is my stance: I have no say or input whatsoever in the UT coaching search, so I'm just along for the ride. I really have no dog in the hunt besides that of every other fan. This stretch of Grudengate has been a huge drain on me and I got to the point that I had to take the Thanksgiving holiday off from this site so I didn't lose my mind. I've since kept an eye on it, but my interaction has significantly fallen because I just can't take it anymore.
That being said, I would absolutely love for Jon Gruden to be our next head coach, and with Babyvol on TOS still saying he stands behind it, I think there is still something there. But for now, I'm just a spectator, and I'm just going to enjoy the ride.

Moral of the Story: Quit slamming people for their speculation in a speculation thread. I don't care if someone believes that we're getting General Neyland reincarnate, everyone has a reason to believe what they want. Just because you think they're wrong doesn't make them an idiot, moron, fool, or anything. Try and be objective.

Good post Mac, I buy it, and keep the thought process going.

They should put you on the Benghazi story.

I don't know if JG is coming or not, but this a excellent piece of timelining and character assessment of parties involved. If he does I'm nominating you for a Pulitzer.

Very nicely done, OP. I was pretty down late Friday, but the more I think about this, the more my feelings are aligned with yours. Nothing else really makes sense.

It's been two weeks since Dooley was let go, and Hart CERTAINLY had a plan in place before that. How can we believe that we don't already have our guy even though ZERO confirmed interviews have occurred? These days, nobody can take a dump without somebody taking pictures and writing a story about it. Yet, not one legitimate interview story.

I think this is just a very complicated situation and that all parties are trying to keep a lid on it. The TFP article was finally a smoking gun, and it required desperate measures to cover.

Who knows, at this point...which is exactly what JG and the UTAD want. But, I am back to thinking this IS going to actually happen.

GO VOLS!

It isn't just that no one can confirm an interview. No one can confirm who is and who isn't a candidate. And beyond that, everyone has a conflicting story about who was or wasn't interviewed and when. Jimbo Fisher, in the last 48 hours has been interviewed, has not been interviewed, has been offered the job, has accepted the job, has been planning to interview with Hart in NYC, and is no longer going to NYC, if he ever was to begin with. This is Keystone Media.

Good read. While I still think Hart was championing Dooley for some reason until the end, missing out on a bowl game screwed up the timing on all this. The coaching speculation heat would have been defused with a bowl game, even if it were a crappy one prior to Christmas.

Oh and thanks again OP, another thread for me to utilize for adding people to my Ignore list.

Macgruder, I'm impressed with the positive responses you've gotten. You laid it out much more clearly than I did.

Good job on helping to open people's eyes on what may be going on here! Every day without a coach just makes me feel even more solid that this is truth.

Are you ignoring people who don't buy into this theory?

I've said from the beginning that I don't think Gruden will be our coach next year. With that said, I would like to point out something that strikes me as really strange about this deal with Gruden.

Watch this clip as Gruden talks about Tennessee football. You can tell the man truly has deep feelings for UT.

Jon Gruden at UT | Video | wbir.com

Now, for those of you that actually watched the video, or even if you didn't, do you really think Jon Gruden would let his agent belittle UT the way he did? Does Gruden strike you as the type of person that would let his agent tell the media that UT fans were living in a "fantasy world" as if he didn't have any respect for our once proud program?

I think it comes down to a couple of choices as to why his agent spoke the way he did.

1) As I've seen pointed out before, Gruden is wanting to finish out the season of MNF before being announced as the next head football coach at UT. In doing so, as the OP pointed out, he gets to collect over $1m dollars. Gruden isn't worried about recruiting time because, once named as coach, recruiting should explode for UT. If this is how it ends, he gets away with the "fantasy land" statement by calling it a hush tactic to quiet the media storm.

Or

2) knowing he probably isn't coming anyway, out of the respect he does have for UT, Gruden grants time for interviews and bargaining with Hart and company. Because the talks actually develop into talking money and terms, some prominent boosters, thinking we truly have a shot at landing Gruden, leak this "info" to close family and/or friends. Those leaks set off a message board and media frenzy. Gruden and/or his agent get/s pissed, afraid this could result in contractual issues with ESPN, and overreact with the "fantasy land" comment.

Both of these could be way off base, but I believe #2 is actually closer than #1. I would love to see what Gruden could do at UT. I, personally, just don't see it happening. I hope like Hell that I'm wrong.

This. Losing to Vandy and Mizzou forced Hart to act before he wanted to, even if it was just to save the fan base (and possibly Knoxville from being burned to the ground).

Sorry that I made smart azz comment about how long it was. Had very busy day and finally read it made a lot of sense. Thanks for all the hard research.

I 100 percent agree with the OP. In fact, here's a copy/paste job of some similar thoughts I posted elsewhere late Friday. I wanted to share this here because it got lost in the shuffle of the Gruden thread:

Dave Hart will be to landing Gruden what James Wilhoit was to beating Florida in 2004. Goat to hero. Wilhoit's miss was an accident, though. Smoke and mirrors. And I'm not buying that Dave Hart is so inept as to just realize this morning there were "rumors" going around. "Courtesy call?" Here's my call: BS.

No "inside sources" here, just common sense. The craziest thing about today is how quickly the majority of folks have dismissed the possibility of Gruden still coming to UT. And based on what? A statement from Gruden's agent, and another statement from another "unnamed source"" (a UT employee who wasn't supposed to say anything so he had to speak anonymously)?

I read the quote from Gruden's agent in the KNS. Are they the only organization he spoke to? And if so, did KNS call him or did he call KNS?

Was Ron Higgins duped by a source a while back when he tweeted of a major deal being planned to present to Gruden?

Was Glenn Carver stupid enough to base his report (Brown ownership stake) based on some second hand or internet message board? Ditto for Steven Hargis.

But move on folks, nothing to see here. Hyams and KNS said so, based on their "inside sources" which I'm guessing to be UTAD folks spinning for their own benefit.

Headline: As Jon Gruden drama ends, focus shifts to other Tennessee candidates

"Tennessee fans expecting the Vols to lure former NFL coach Jon Gruden from his lucrative television gig had their hopes stamped out Friday.

"Gruden's longtime agent called the idea of his client taking a job at Tennessee "fantasy." A source close to Tennessee's search said the Vols had moved on to other candidates.

"The details of the flirtation between Gruden and Tennessee, and the extent of interest on either side, may never be fully known. One thing is clear after a zany Friday: The Super Bowl-winning coach who had captivated Tennessee fans for months won't be coming to Knoxville."

EXHIBIT B

Knoxville News Sentinel

Headline: Cutcliffe forming staff to return to UT

"Duke University head football coach David Cutcliffe is assembling a coaching staff in anticipation of becoming the head coach at the University of Tennessee, a source close to the negotiations told the News Sentinel late Thursday.

"When asked about Cutcliffe, UT athletic director Mike Hamilton said via text message that the university was still in the interviewing phase of the process and that no offer had been made to anyone.

"Although Cutcliffe is assembling a staff, the deal has not been finalized. An agreement could be reached as early as today, but Cutcliffe, 55, has let loyalty to his assistants affect his career decisions in the past."

Zany indeed, boys. Zany indeed.

Just my two cents. Flame away.
