MACGRUDER's Jon Gruden theory (with help from others) Warning: Long

I hope this thread is real because I have zero faith in Hart and the current UT administration doing anything else that would resurrect the football program.

One thing (rumor) I see hurting the credibility with the recruits is that it was mentioned that the current staff were visiting with recruits last week and told them that we were dealing with Gruden or Bob Stoops. If this current info supplied by the main media is true then we have lied to them. Sure that will go over well.

I've been in the same spot as OP. I still don't believe anything substantive has been put forth to dispel that we will soon be the Gruniversity of Tennessee. It could still just as easily happen as not.

Last night I got what I consider a monumental text message.

From this point on my official public statement on JG is that there is no way. It is over.

Hart and Jimblow are dining at the Copper Cellar tonight, BTW.

Let's all wish for a merry Xmas.

I believe Strong is the man for the job. I heard his interview went really well. We should have hired him 4 years ago.

Merry Christmas to you too!

OP, good post, definite plausibility there.

All info coming out of AD has been garbage. Hubbs said Hart was in Ok Thursday... Uh, no. Hubbs said Hart interviewed Strong Friday... Uh, no.

Definitely some strange things going on. Hart is either a genius or frighteningly incompetent. Hopefully the former.

I agree 100% I think it's just a diversion to hold off till MNF is over I may be wrong but I have been before so won't lose much sleep. I think the story was about to bust so they diverted it elsewhere

Good read, OP. I've been thinking the same thing about this whole situation. People reporting from sources within the utad have been told what they want the public to believe and for the most part it has worked. Now almost everyone has been thrown off the scent by these reports and think you're crazy if you think this can still happen. As of now, I think Gruden will be our coach. He may not but I'm not buying what the utad is saying and doing at this point. It makes too much sense not to.

Put me down as a tin foil wearing MOFO. Just because I think Hubbs, Rucker, and Hyams are all douches.

There is one aspect of all this that has troubled me. You can learn a huge amount about a person playing golf with them. IMO, there are few other activities quite like golf in that regard. If in fact, Gruden and key boosters do play golf together, I find it very hard to believe that the deal was squashed at the last moment by some imagined cold feet on one side or the other. Such a relationship would go well beyond booster plus random coach candidate and his agent, it's a friendship built around a common interest.

The initial negotiation would be very informal. Big booster turns to Gruden following tee shots on 4th hole...

$$$: "Not sure Derek's gonna work out. Jon, what would it take to get you to come coach the Vols?"

Jon: "You can't afford me." :chuckle:

$$$: "Try me."

Jon: "Seriously? I don't know...um...Saban money or better. Plus a top staff. Wouldn't be cheap."

$$$: "Ball park me."

Jon: "Ten to eleven."

$$$: "But you'll win, right?" :Jon nods: :long pause: "Done."

From that point on, it's all implementation detail.

Now if it isn't actually a friendship, then all bets are off...but...if there is a relationship that goes deeper than a simple acquaintance, it seems very improbable to me that the stuff put out as the deal killer would be a real issue, much less a deal killer. At the very least, there wouldn't have been any big surprises...the major details happened on the golf course.

Not wearing a tinfoil hat...but willing to concede that some of the details don't add up. Either way, it's been fun to speculate!

i still have a feeling deep down we get gruden... we can't afford not too.. even peyton thinks so...

Thanks. I don't promote lies, or half-truths unless I solidly state they're my own opinions. Hence, why I openly admit I put a lot of faith behind what a lot of the OG's have said, yet don't' 100% stand behind them, nor would cite them as reasons as to how this has played out thus far. It's too high-dollar for information to flow as freely as they'd let on to spell out exactly like it would, hence, why I'm not surprised at all that they suddenly find themselves confused and questioning their own inside sources as to how everything could have gone from so-good to so-bad in such a short amount of time.

Obviously, this is a Pro-Gruden account, and that should obviously be considered by folks when they read anything I post relating to this coaching hire. However, I'm not a bi-polar poster, nor a newbie here (or other TN related sports forums...in fact I've been found out already on another just from my posting style). Like I mentioned above, the days of true anonymity online are all but dead, hehe. My posting style gives me away I guess.

Anyhoo, I stand firm in my opinion 100% in all that I said above, and the "likes" that I've gotten on this account compared to my post count make me question why I ever bothered on the old account anyway.

Here is another thing we need to look at. If i am correct there is a conference this week that is inducting a well respected man in Tennessee. If this news would have leaked it may have taken away from what Phil has achieved. We can all agree to that. So why not make this the TN weekend to remember. Phil goes into the HOF,(i would love to know where/when that is but I cannot find the info.) THen next week we get a coach that can put us back on top in national recruiting picture. You win with players therefore recruiting is the number one thing we have to get back to the top.

To answer your parenthetical question, the National Football Foundation's 55th annual awards dinner, held on Tuesday night (12/4) at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City, will feature the induction of former Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer and 16 others into the College Football Hall of Fame. (New York City could be nexus of Tennessee's coaching search for next few days » GoVolsXtra )

I would come if I was him were probably willing to pay him 8 million a year and give him a seven year guaranteed contract. He can then go 5 and 7 and we still have to pay him. Were willing to put up 56 million dollars to a guy who has won a Super Bowl with a team of talent as good as any ever assembled on an NFL team. He did in the next few years totally decimated that talent and finished 5 and 11 and got fired. He has never recruited in his life or won even one college game. If I were him I would definitely take the 56 million because he could possibly get paid for doing nothing for four years if things work out like they did at Tampa Bay.

Okay MACGRUDER...i post some but when it comes to Gruden i have not said much. I think it is because like many posters i dont know who or what is accurate and believable. So i just want to get on record saying my line of thinking is with yours. With all the negativity towards those who still think it may be Gruden it has been hard to enjoy the search this week. Anyway, im all in. Still believe Gruden is the savior of our program and like the Bama fans who wanted Saban i wont stop believing until someone else is hired Go Big Orange!

well,i think there is a very slim chance the Gruden will be the next HC at UT,but it seems to me that TNHopeful505 and Macgruder are probably the same person, that is a lot of smokescreen and stuff to me,if it was going to be Gruden,i would imagine that we wouldn't have heard anything, sounds like Fox Mulder has been on the case

I can assure you we aren't.

There are only three people on this board I actually know who they are. He is not one of them.
