MACGRUDER's Jon Gruden theory (with help from others) Warning: Long

Another log to throw on the fire...

Remember how upset the OG's were when Dooley kept loosing? Almost to a OG, they said Dooley's gonna f*** all the timing up by not being bowl eligible. Sure sounds like they knew MNF would be fulfilled on Grude's end.

Nice write up OP. I have two questions...what are OG's (I know OG stands for Original Gangsters) is that what everyone is referring too? And number two. Jimmy Hyams has the reputation of reporting everything late, but people think he's getting news first on this?

OG = Original Grudenite.

Original Grudenites. The posters who have been posting info/rumors on Gruden since the first thread, which started around the Akron or UGA week timeframe I believe.

At which point I thought they were all smoking crack and that there was no way in hell we could/would ever get Gruden...

Now people say I'm smoking crack because I believe it is still a possibility...

All because Hyams went from "there is no way we get Gruden - we aren't even talking to him", to "he cancelled a meeting and isn't interested and we never talked $ with him"...

Ok...whatever...

Three truths I have held self evident since this thing began:

1)Everyone is a candidate until the press conference.

2)Trust nothing the Knoxville media says. They haven't gotten anything right since Fulmer left.

3)Posters with inside sources are to be carefully scrutinized or completely ignored.

Mac, maybe the best thing you did by posting that here is making sure you get a cut of the action when Rucker or Hubbs or somebody writes the "definitive" tell-all behind-the-scenes book next year about the Gruden hire. Nice.

OG = Original Grudenite = folks who pushed their chips "all in" a long time ago saying that this very scenario (with Dooley gone and JG being a possibility) would happen.

Also, please forgive any typos or confusing wording I posted in the OP. Again, it's not all information I directly formed myself, but rather a culmination of things I've seen, heard, read, and consulted with others about - it hasn't helped that I had a few beers before I posted it.

Finally, and the most confusing thing to me - is...a couple of the OGs, not just one, said this exact scenario would play out, where it would look like Gruden was off the table right before he was hired - yet, now that it's happened, it seems like everyone, even the OGs, are taking their chips off the table. Like I initially stated to form my opinion on this, don't trust anyone at this point....it's way, WAY too big, but that also confuses the Hell out of me.

I have to believe, using logic, that their sources are a part of this system - and that their sources were told to tone it down, pump the brakes a bit. Hence, why they're so skeptical of it playing out the way they initially planned. Might be a case of them trusting their own sources too much where they dont even realize things are happening the way they were told it would happen. Anyway, that's enough rambling logic for now.

What is the earliest date that Gruden can take a head coaching job (NFL or college) and still receive the 1.1 million dollars from his ESPN contract?

The last MNF game is December 22nd. So, the 23rd? I would like to hear something definitive a lot earlier than that, but damn, talk about a great Christmas present.

Good job and well written. What was funny to me is that there were a couple of legit to the situation people attached to the Gruden situation and no one paid them attention, they were all focused on the so-called "insiders". As you have correctly stated the door is not completely shut. Of course if a hire is made in the next few days, it didn't work out, but until an announcement is made and the coach steps up to the podium it is not over.

Look, I'm not going to try to persuade anyone to subscribe to the Macgruder theory, but it does offer a coherent explanation of events that lends itself to message board debate for those truly interested in debating - and isn't that why we're here?

Allow me to add one thought to expand upon Mr. Macgruder's position - return, if you will, to the Mike and Mike non-denial denial. I don't pretend to be an expert on football, football coaches, or football coach searches, but I do know a thing or two about preparing people for media interviews and Gruden's response to the questioning from M&M was a clanging wrong note in an otherwise believable symphony of speculation. That was the most inept, unprepared, and overtly disingenuous response from a seasoned media-type that I've ever heard. In short, it was the response of a person caught with his hand in the proverbial cookie jar.

If the idea of coaching the Vols was a "fantasy" as Gruden's agent would have us believe, then it would have been easy enough for Gruden to take that opportunity to set us all straight. He did not do so.

And, so, we are left with one irrefutable FACT: the only words we have from the man himself about whether he will be the one to lead the Vols back to football relevancy, were a stumbling collection of inconclusive babble. Ask yourself why, and then make the answer to that question the central factor around which you base your opinion.

Hehe, thanks bud. I appreciate it. I'm actually surprised there's been as many folks agreeing with what we're putting out there as there are. You got a lot of harsh feedback initially, but I think that was largely in part to the raw emotion people were feeling when they started believing this "couldn't" really happen, after getting their hopes up so high.

Unlike a lot of those folks, I've been very speculative and hesitant about this whole ordeal until the Free Press article came out, and moreso, the response from it. Like I said earlier, silence speaks more than words. And the silence from every key player involved, mixed with the brash words from everyone not truly involved, says more than anything. I've seen these things play out a few times. This isn't my first rodeo, to say the least.

I'm keeping the faith, lowering my emotional attachment, and just looking at the evidence. And in doing so, I'm more confident than ever (when most folks were promising it was a done deal, that was when I was most doubtful) that this will happen. It makes too much sense

Thanks for your thoughtful analysis Sir - I gave you a "like"! Just want to add one more fact that falls in line with your explanation - SIAP - Gruden's statement on M&M: 'just trying to keep my job...

Mac, you, volmax, ab333, and I among a few others are on the record -- maybe now we need to help tone this thing down rather than stirring it up again? Although the critical mass seems to have bailed at this point ...

Let's post some "insider info" about al golden. ;-)

everyone should read tfp article by hargis yesterday. gruden out came from utad to knoxville media. jimmy stanton- no comment on the search.

Sources: Jon Gruden out of UT picture | timesfreepress.com

that aligns a lot more with op and logic than the ridiculous knoxville media. I hear they just hired the iraqi information minister to cover this story for the sports animal....

When you're wrong then will you give all of us calling you crazy since the beginning about Gruden kudos?

Since you are so smart, why even waste your time here; why waste your time reading the post? Why are you wasting your time beating a dead horse? I don't agree with the Obama supporters, but I be damned if you catch me hanging around their threads!

MacGruder, have you ever heard that one before? I know I sure haven't....

Look, if we're wrong, we'll both own up. But this is better than anything else we've got out there. At least in our world, we're still getting Gruden, as opposed to some second rate coach like Golden or Strong.

If I was anyone else, I'd be hoping me and MacGruder was right, instead of trying to bash us. We've put out two very thought out posts that of course are not fact, but are very possible and even probable scenarios. We're refusing to be puppets of a media that is not telling the whole truth. If they were, then why were they ALL saying different things, but the theme was the same? Doesn't make sense.
I actually feel sorry for you.

Mac says "Gruden is coming."

I won't go that far. I do think it is still a real possibility.

Again, until someone other than Gruden is introduced as the new HC, I think it can happen.
