Making the Tourney is NOT enough

When has Coach Martin brought us a top 20 class? He hasnt, the last ranked class we had was back in 2010 and it was ranked number 9. If we want to get back to where we was at under Pearl it all starts with recruiting. In the 6 years he was here he landed 3 top 10 classes. The number 6 ranked class in 2006, 7th ranked in 2008, and the 9th ranked class in 2010. Under Pearl he made our basketball program revelant again and took us places we had never been before his arrival. From his first season in 05-06 until his last in 10-11 TN went 145-61 with 6 trips out of our 19 total to the NCAA tournament. In 2008 he brought us our first outright regular season SEC championship in 41 years. That same season, although very short lived, he took us to our first number 1 ranking ever as a program. Coach Martin has my full support but so far his tenure has been less than impressive. This year we will find out if the man can truly coach a team to its full potential or not. His recruiting has been average at best and is still yet to be seen if he can land top players/classes with any consistency or not. I think we all can agree that its hard seeing the basketball program take a step back knowing where it was at and what it can be with the right coach.

I think you're a little off base with your recruiting comments. Volbeast is likely referring to this 2014 class which by ESPN is currently ranked 11, and still has the strong possibility of adding Looney. As for his recruiting being average at best, I'm guessing if you did the research you'd find it's better better than the "average" NCAAor SEC team. Finally, Martin has truly had 2 classes, the 2012 & 2013 classes. He landed a 5* in both classes, not sure how much more consistent he can get than that.

As for his tenure so far being "less than impressive" if you ask an unbiased educated person, they'll tell you he's done a better than expected job.

Agree that CCM has recruited better than anyone ver thought he would. If he lands Looney, he will have reeled in more 5* players than CBP did in a shorter period of time. If he gets results on the court this season like I think he will, we won't have Ny more comments like the one from Volbeast.

Not to mention that CCM goes after high character 5 stars, not just any 5 star like Pearl did. All of Pearl's 5 stars had character issues minus Tobias.

This can be argued both ways. Theoretically if healthy then yes, the stokes/Maymon duo may be the best in the nation. However, if all of a sudden Maymon isn't 100%, Pops looks like Yemi, and Davis isn't ready for the physicality of the college game, you're left with little. On paper it looks good, but as far as proven depth, there's not a whole lot in our front court.

I agree. Right now, the frontcourt is a lot of potential. If everything pans out, they are talented and relatively deep. If Maymon isn't healthy, Pops is more undeveloped than we've been lead to believe, and Davis isn't ready, then Stokes will have a tough row to hoe again.

I agree he does appear to target and recruit high character players. I am was not aware that ESPN currently has this class ranked 11th. I had to go check it out for myself and was shocked to see it. There seems to be alot of disparity with how other so called experts from other top websites feel about this 2014 class and that shows in all their rankings. Scout, Rivals, and 247 sports does not have our class ranked in the top 25. 247sports has it ranked number 36 for what thats worth. Out of the 8 players signed in Coach Martins first two classes he has landed two 5 star players in Stokes and Hubbs. The other 6 players signed have all been 3 stars. According to Rivals, in Pearls 3 top 10 classes he signed a total of 4 5 star players along with 6 4 stars who were all rated as top 100 players in the country. The lack of other top rated quality players for Coach Martin so far is the difference between his and Pearls classes. We got good fast and remained a tournament team in all of Pearls years because he was able to regulary sign those types of players. It is yet to been seen if Martin can do that.

You should try to tighten up those posts a little bit, while I appreciate your effort most of us have short attention spans. :)

Just killing time, got nothing better to do ya know? Laid up with a busted up knee, cant really do much of nothing. Mise well keep my mind busy to fight off boredom and keep from going crazy.

OP is spot on. This needs to be a top 15 or top 10 team.I am more concrned with regular season than a deep tourney run because upset happen. But regardless, I will be upset with Cuonzo if we are not a top 5 seed. I will also be upset if we lay an absolute egg in the tourney. JMO.

I agree. There is no reason this can't be a top 15 team. The pieces are there for a great season and a deep run in the tourney. If we avoid the injury bug this team will make a very deep run. Jmo

Where has CCM said the kinky goal of this team is to make the tournament and they'll be satisfied....please tell me?

My basketball IQ is low, so i need some help with this one. I don't think CCM has talked about the kinky goal of the team to be satisfied, but I bet the NCAA wouldn't be too happy about it :pepper:

Lol...where has CCM said the main goal of this team is to just make the tournament and they'll be satisfied?

If we have no major injuries, I'll be disappointed with anything less than a sweet 16 JMO

If Chane Behanan doesn't return it will be Memphis & UConn playing for the AAC Title.

On a national level this now puts Tennessee into my Final4 in Dallas.

Looking forward to watching the 1 and only Sir Jordan McRae this season!

I think Louisville still competes in the AAC without Behanan, Pitino will figure out a way. They may go smaller with Kuric, which with the new rules could actually benefit them.

Kuric's long gone lol. They still have Van Treese and a 4star freshman PF. They'll miss Chane but not too much. He'll be back by the the time they play UK anyways.

Van Treese is who I meant lol...as for Chane, I don't think so. All reports seem to be saying the chance he returns at all is very small.
