Joey Matthews did start the Southern Miss game in 2000.
No...No...No... Joey Mathews started. Not Joey Matthews. Sorry, Hat! :birgits_giggle:

That's strange Charles. I remember Clausen throwing for 300+ against LSU. I also rmember the sainted Travis Stephens and also Donte Stallworth fumbling the game away. I also don't remember Clausen being on the field with the defense when they couldn't stop the QB draw any of the 317 times LSU ran it in the second half.
that's how i remember it as well.

That's 100% correct. Casey got blamed for a lot of losses that weren't really his fault. He had a pretty good game in that SEC championship. Two years later he threw for like 300 yards in the 4th quarter against Auburn. It was an awesome comeback, but ended when some Aubie made a great interception. Of course, since Clausen's one mistake slammed the door shut on a game full of UT incompetence, he got the blame. No one remembers our running back stable managed to eke out only 4 yards rushing. Also, our defense got embarrassed by Cadillac, Ronnie, and their fullback in the first half.

Guilty. I've been a little harsh on Peyton. I so enjoy watching his acolytes go nuts at even the hint of criticism that I sometimes level unfair shots at him to draw the predictable, laughable response. In the spirit of Freak's "State of the Nation" post, I'll give a short commentary on my actual opinions of Manning, then leave the topic to others from now on.
1) Peyton Manning was a superb college QB. That's not available for reasonable dispute. His numbers, accomplished against SEC competition speak to his talent.
2) Peyton Manning hasn't displayed a flair for making plays on the biggest stages. In both college and the NFL, he has struggled with interceptions and inconsistency in the games of greatest importance to his team.
3) Peyton Manning actually gets an unfair rap regarding his time at UT. He couldn't beat Florida. Neither did anyone else in the SEC.
4) Peyton Manning seems to be a genuinely nice guy who is supportive of his university. He does cast UT in a good light.
5) Peyton Manning is a bit of a glory hound who likes his big paycheck and the media attention a lot more than he lets on.
6) All in all UT has benefitted tremendously from its association with Peyton Manning.

Now, who wants to hear my Travis Henry-Rodney Allen Rippey comparisons?

It's good that you should take the mask off from time to time. :post-20645-1119625378:
Now get back to work! There are still two and a half months before we can talk about actual football, and the board is far too slow without a bad guy. :shades:
