Manning Debate

Hat, I have always felt that you've exhibited a high level of class on the board. I no longer feel that way. You're showing a severe lack of class in this discussion. I'm done with this conversation.
Guilty. I've been a little harsh on Peyton. I so enjoy watching his acolytes go nuts at even the hint of criticism that I sometimes level unfair shots at him to draw the predictable, laughable response. In the spirit of Freak's "State of the Nation" post, I'll give a short commentary on my actual opinions of Manning, then leave the topic to others from now on.
1) Peyton Manning was a superb college QB. That's not available for reasonable dispute. His numbers, accomplished against SEC competition speak to his talent.
2) Peyton Manning hasn't displayed a flair for making plays on the biggest stages. In both college and the NFL, he has struggled with interceptions and inconsistency in the games of greatest importance to his team.
3) Peyton Manning actually gets an unfair rap regarding his time at UT. He couldn't beat Florida. Neither did anyone else in the SEC.
4) Peyton Manning seems to be a genuinely nice guy who is supportive of his university. He does cast UT in a good light.
5) Peyton Manning is a bit of a glory hound who likes his big paycheck and the media attention a lot more than he lets on.
6) All in all UT has benefitted tremendously from its association with Peyton Manning.

Now, who wants to hear my Travis Henry-Rodney Allen Rippey comparisons?

If you really are a lawyer, then you chose wise.

Thanks, Hat. I think that's a fair assessment, and it's much more indicative of your level of class.

I really am. However, there are many days that I question the wisdom of that decision.

That doesn't surprise me in the least. You write really well.

Those good teachers seem hard to come by nowadays... At least in public schools. Four years of public high school and maybe 2 or 3 competent teachers the whole time.

That wouldn't be accurate. Jeff Francis was far worse than Manning.

Hold on a sec... Erik Ainge will probably make that list if he keeps up his play from last season.

He's won the same number of Super Bowls or AFC Championships as Jeff George did. Or Jack Trudeau. Or Jim Harbaugh.

Or Dan Marino
Or Warren Moon

Hat, I am a little dissapointed that you finally cracked. You were on a roll.

Hat, ol buddy ol pal, as I KNOW you KNOW, Peyton doesn't write the TV commercials, nor does he control how often they are shown. He signed a contract with whoever does those commercials, and does them. End of the timeline for him.

Anyway, your assessment is 100% right, and people who dislike Peyton, more often than not, dislike his apologists.

I'll admit, I think Peyton is my favorite football player EVER, but of course he has weaknesses.

lol. i cant believe how bored we have become.
casey clausen was a stooge. fulmer's stooge. enough said.
I wasn't around for the Clausen year's so I can't say much on him, but with Fulmer... If he's a stooge, what does that make the 18 other coaches with worse records in all 115 years of Tennessee football?

If it takes a stooge to go a combined 5-0 at Florida, Alabama, and Miami I say we recruit Larry, Curly, Moe, Schemp, and Curly Joe.

I'm taking a page from my good friend, HHH. I'm going for a face turn. It's always good to keep the public guessing.

i didnt say fulmer was a stooge guys. i said clausen was fulmer's stooge.

and yes hatvol he won a few games that peyton didnt. big deal.

he also had a chance to put us in the nc game and choked. he also cost us a game against florida because he choked in the rain.

he also got manhandled by k-state in the cotton bowl. then led us to two straight peah bowl's where we scored what 17 total points.

this is junk and clausen sucks.

so long jimmy and the CLAUSEN CURSE.

But you have perfected the heel my friend. The humor always suffers when the face turn happens.

That's strange Charles. I remember Clausen throwing for 300+ against LSU. I also remember the sainted Travis Stephens and also Donte Stallworth fumbling the game away. I also don't remember Clausen being on the field with the defense when they couldn't stop the QB draw any of the 317 times LSU ran it in the second half.

You do have a point. Unlike HHH, I don't have a DX reunion as a payoff for the swerve. Maybe I'll keep things just as they are.

I would suggest the Mankind insane turn but we already have plenty of those.
Exactly, I don't want to engage in gimmick infringement.

Andy Kelly won in '89 and '90. Casey Clausen and Jeff Francis. Joey Matthews.
Hat, you got the first two correct but you missed the bonus! :disappointed: Try again! Good thing you went to law school and not med school. :biggrin2:

(Sorry, it's taken me so long to grade your pop quiz but some us work 16 hour days)

Joey Matthews did start the Southern Miss game in 2000.
