Manning vs. Brady

Why do you throw out Montana when trying to prove a point about Manning and Brady? Montana compares very well to Brady. Neither were highly touted out of college. Neither had teams with vaunted running attacks. Both were helped along by solid (not outstanding) defenses. And, most importantly, both Montana and Brady could march their teams down the field for the win.

Manning is the exact opposite. He comes into games hot. He throws TDs early and often. Yet, he barely ever makes waves in the 4th quarter with a game on the line.

That being said, I would rather have a guy that can win ugly, then someone who puts up pretty statistics, yet has never shown the fortitude and composure to come back in the big game.

Manning has been winning games left and right in the 4th quarter during the regular season. He just hasn't done it in the playoffs... yet.

i hate this debate, and i've gone back and forth...and i do like Manning obviously...and from a technical position standpoint, Mannin imo is a better "technical" qb.

but here's where Brady has him:
1. he doesn't have to be the thing that wins the game
2. he doesn't have to be the highest paid player on the team
3. He has no problem in putting the ball in someone else's hands, including the defense, to win the game.
4. he took a pay cut in order to free up cap room to get some key players.
5. His WR core has never been as good as Peyton's. They WERE right behind them, but i'd take the Colt's WR;s in heartbeat.

Brady has all the intangibles...can't argue that. Therefore he's perceived to be a better team qb than peyton, and i can't argue that either.

Peyton has become Dan Marino...The Ultimate Feild general...demanding of both himself and those around him. he can wear his emotions on his sleeve, and he has to be the focal point of that team. He puts all the pressure on his shoulders to win. you've heard him say it plenty in the past...if he doesn't play well, the colts don't win.

I love Manning...and i think he is a great qb...but he doesn't have the intangibles that brady has.

it's the moder day Marino/Montana debate. And as history has shown....Montana is still better than Marino...and until the colts win something, it will be the same for brady/manning.

and bottom line...the pats have had better all around teams, especially defensively, than the colts in the past...and that does have something to do with it as well.

joe montana or dan marino?

Thats pretty much what it is right now. Manning (marino) compiles all the stats, Brady (montana) wins the rings. I know people are saying "well the pats are better overall" but I would take the colts wr's and before this year rb over the pats. And another thing is that when it comes to the playoffs Manning just doesnt do as well. I dont know if its a mental thing, pressure, or just facing good teams but he seems to have his worst games when it counts.

I disagree here. I think the Colts WRs 'look' better because of Manning. With another team and another QB, they would be average or below average. Just look at some of the stats of player's before they got to Indy. IMHO, it is a mark of a great player to elevate the players around him. I think Manning does a better job of that than any QB in history. You can call it the chicken and egg theory... which came first..... but I can tell you I think Manning came first and the rest of the offense has looked good statistically because of him.

Peyton Manning will go down as the greatest QB to ever play the game. I think he does need at least 1 Super Bowl win to achieve this, but no more.

There was a huge amount of pressure on Manning in the first playoff game in 2003. All he did was have one of the most perfect games a qb can have.

2003 AFC Wildcard Game: won 41 - 10 vs. Denver Broncos
2003 AFC Divisional Playoff: won 38 - 31 at Kansas City Chiefs
2003 AFC Championship Game: lost 14 - 24 at New England Patriots
2004 AFC Wildcard Game: won 49 - 24 vs. Denver Broncos
2004 AFC Divisional Playoff: lost 3 - 20 at New England Patriots
2005 AFC Divisional Playoff: lost 18 - 21 vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

Since 2003, Manning is 3-3 as a starter in the playoffs. The past 3 seasons, the Colts have lost to the eventual Super Bowl Champs in the playoffs.

Just saying that Montana was a clutch player that nobody can argue with.

You haven't been watching Peyton this year very close. He totally dismantled the best defense the NFL has seen for many years. Oh yeah - he lead a 4th quarter comeback to win the game:blush:

Put Peyton Manning on a team like the Patriots and you would have the most dominating team in NFL history. I watched part of the Colts-Broncos game, and I was extremely impressed with how Peyton picked apart one of the best defenses - maybe the best - in the league.

I have better things to do with my time then follow a team I have no connection to, simply because a former Vol plays for them...

I watch when it counts, in the playoffs. I can't say I have been impressed with Peyton beyond the Wild Card round.

When did the Colts play the Bears this year?

When did the Colts play the Bears this year?

Are you referring to the Bears team that needed fumbles and punts returned for a TD to beat a Cardinals team with a rookie playing QB??? :)

Seriously, until the Broncos met the Colts - they had given up the fewest TD's since a team did it back in the 50's or 60's?

The Broncos have played some great offensive teams (Patriots, Colts, St Louis, Kansas City) whereas the Bears haven't played the same caliber of teams. Denver WAS leading until they played the Colts.
